The Effect and Meaning of Reading Program for Alienated Children : Focused on 'The Reading Program with Library' (독서프로그램이 소외계층 아동에게 미치는 효과와 의미 - 도서관과 함께 책읽기프로그램을 중심으로 -)

  • This study analyzed the effect and meaning of reading program for alienated children. To accomplish this, this study collected its data through surveys and observations with 1,643 children that participated in the reading program by Library of National Library for Children and Young Adults and through surveys and interviews with librarians, instructors and representatives of agencies that related to the program. The results show that there were improvements in children's reading interests, reading attitude and affect in the program. And children's experiences and interests in libraries were increased after the program. Children evaluated affirmatively the program and children's demand for the program was increased.

A Narrative Inquiry into Middle-aged Women who Experienced the Residential Independence of Never-married Children (중년여성의 비혼자녀 주거독립 경험에 대한 내러티브 탐구)

  • This study examined the experience of middle-aged women, centering on the home as the residence of never-married children. I conducted interviews with four such women in their 50s and 60s who had experienced the residential independence of never-married children within the past five years, and a variety of field texts were used as research texts. Through reconstructing the participants' experiences, two main themes emerged: experiencing anxiety regarding alienation from their child and expecting to resolve this anxiety through the marriage of their child. The participants were anxious about their never-married children, and this study found that at the root of this was anxiety regarding being alienated from their children. The participants often attempted to visit their children's homes to relieve such anxiety but, as their children often discouraged this, the situation was aggravated. Thus, the participants wished for their children to marry, as they aspired to restore an intimate relationship with them through such an event. These results imply that tensions and conflicts between parents and children may arise due to the independence of never-married children.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of 'The Reading with Library' program in the national library for Children and Young Adults. For this study, data was collected through surveys with 590 children in 46 institutions that participated in '2009 The Reading with Library'program. The study mainly focused on three factors - Children's Self-Esteem, Sociality, and Reading Ability and Questionnaire surveyed. The study revealed that 42(91.3%) among 46institutions showed improvement in the Children's Self-Esteem, Sociality, and Reading Ability test. As the result, 11 institutions (23.9%) were influenced by the program.

  • The purpose of this ethnography is to describe and analyze the wild-goose mother's everyday life, her family relationships, and her social networking. Thirteen mothers from New York, California, and Texas, U.S.A., were interviewed with an unstructured questionnaire. Their residency and everyday schedules are arranged around the children's educational conditions. They have experienced difficult relationships with Korean American immigrants, Korean students, other wild-goose mothers, and Americans. They have failed to develop their social capital effectively due to the language barrier and a cultural capital deficiency. As a kind of family strategy, this separation sometimes strengthens the spousal relationship, preventing divorce, but usually weakens the emotional ties and quality of communication between husband and wife. The acculturation gap between the mother and her children may cause the mother to become alienated and exacerbate the generational conflict.

Analysis on Effects of AI Thinking Skills Coding Program on Software Development Tendency to Primary Students in Rural Areas (AI 사고력 코딩 프로그램이 농어촌 초등학생의 SW성향에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Subjects for the study are educationally alienated class living in poor educational environment. Those students often live outside the reach of software education which is one of key capabilities of Fourth Industrial Revolution. The gap between student in rural and urban areas is becoming more distinct and schoolchildren in rural areas are further limited to access software development education under COVID-19 where face-to-face classes are more rarely conducted. To overcome the issue, AI based thinking skills coding educational program was developed and tested on children in 6 primary schools in south and north of Gyunggi-do, South Korea. Questionnaire were conducted before and after classes to research on students'awareness on AI thinking skills coding. At the end of the study, subjects showed statistically significant increase in confidence, interest, and attitude, and showed positive overall feedback on software development tendency after the program is conducted.

Making and Using an Ecological Learning-Place in Primary Schools in Daegu (대구 지역 초등학교의 생태학습장 조성과 활용)

  • Because of the rapid industrialization and urbanization, urban dwellers are lack of opportunity to contact with nature, and hence alienated from it. In particular, primary school children who are very sensible to nature need more opportunities to learn nature by direct interactions with it. For this purpose, a movement for making and using ecological learning-place in play-ground within primary school. It has been found as a result of research on ecological learning-places in 7 primary schools in Daegu that such places, equipped with several ecological facilities, provide both pupils and local dwellers around schools with a place for ecological learning and for rest. But some of them have been left without care and hence can not be properly used, because of inappropriate site, insufficient facilities, and deficient programme for practical use. In conclusion, the paper reconfirms importance of ecological learning-place within grounds of primary school in terms of its educational, social and ecological effects, and suggests briefly some measures to encourage its construction and practical use.

Status and Challenges of Korean Out of School Children Health Check-up (한국 학교 밖 청소년 건강검진의 현황과 과제)

  • Health inequality means health gaps that can be affected adverse effects to the vulnerable groups in a society. Many scholars argue that it is needed social interventions to reduce health gaps between the vulnerable and the privileged in a society, because social inequalities can be caused and resulted health inequality among them. In this context, this article introduces Korean out of school children health check-up as part of the policies to reduce health inequality in the society. For a long time, many out of school children have been alienated from the national health checkup systems. That means they are not only marginalized groups in Korean society, but also excluded from the benefits of health promotion and health management. Many runaway youths are struggling to live by themselves, who are escaped from their families and they don't have enough resources to keep their health. They are also young and low waged workers who are expelled to the streets, while they don't have any support and protection from the communities. Out of school children health checkup has been conducted to the adolescents who stay in the shelters or study in alternative schools. To get meaningful results as the health inequality reduction policy, it is needed to expand out of children health checkup to the runaway teenagers.

A Study on Wives' Experience of Unemployment of Their Husbands (남편의 실직에 대한 아내의 경험 연구)

  • In this study, I analyzed how wives experience their husbands' sudden loss of jobs. In-depth interviews were conducted with six married women whose husbands lost jobs. Each person was interviewed for 3 to 4 hours, between June and August 2003. The wives tended to see the husband as someone who gave them a hard time, yet whom they still had to rely on. In addition, the husband was another difficult problem that they had to deal with, because they had to watch the husband struggle to adjust following the distressing event. Some wives blamed themselves for the unemployment of their husbands and were pained for their husbands' adversity. The wives also had the challenge of taking up a job to support the family. Their marital life became tougher and more conflicts emerged. The wives often alienated their husbands from the rest of the family unintentionally, or attempted to break away from their husbands by leaving home. Yet, they returned home in the end, and tried to find hope, by taking a different perspective and looking at the bright side of life, by finding the value of her existence, through faith, and by reaffirming love for the husband and children.

Pathway from Domestic Violence to Adolescents' Internet Game Addiction - Focusing on Mediating Effect of Parental Attachment - (청소년의 가정폭력노출경험이 인터넷 게임중독에 미치는 영향 - 부모애착의 매개효과 -)

  • This study examined the pathway through which adolescents' exposure to domestic violence could lead them to become addicted to Internet games. A total of 709 middle school and high school students were used as subjects and data from the 'domestic violence on children and adolescent' section of the 2010 National Data on Domestic Violence were used. The results of analysis using structural equations showed that the subjects' exposure to domestic violence did not directly affect their addiction to Internet games but that it indirectly affected their addiction through decrease in parental attachment. This can be interpreted to mean that when parents who should be a source of safety for their children become agents and recipients of violence, adolescents come to feel alienated because they cannot form any secure attachment to their parents and cannot build trust or emotional stability in their real-life parents, and they accordingly become absorbed in the virtual world of games. The results of the analysis were then used to discuss action plans for the prevention and intervention of adolescents' internet game addiction.

Survival of Mothers with Disabled Children in Social Welfare Institutions : Growing from Passive Actors to Active Actors (뇌병변 장애자녀 어머니들의 사회복지제도 속에서 생존하기 : 수동적 행위자에서 능동적 행위자로 거듭나기)

  • The aim of this study is to reveal development processes of mothers with disabled children as active human agents utilizing social welfare institutions. Many social welfare studies have generally described welfare service users as passive subjects alienated from welfare information and subordinate to dominant welfare system. However, this investigation indicates that they do not merely remain as passive policy targets. They also perform as active actors who seek for useful information, strategically acquire profits in the given system despite institutional constraints, and create new welfare institutions. Through in-depth interviews with 11 mothers of disabled children with brain lesions, this study has derived a grounded theory on the mothers' maturation processes in interaction with social welfare institutions, which consist 6 stages(entering, awakening, exploring, struggling, resigning and utilizing period). This substantive analysis on the survival processes of mothers with disabled children in the social welfare system provides empirical knowledge and evidence about relationship between the structure and agents. It also suggests a practical policy proposal for disabled people and their families based on these stages.
