  • This study develops a new method for interpreting the yield load from load tests on drilled shaft foundations ended on general soils, which is defined as a point where the maximum curvature on the hyperbolic-approximated load-settlement curve occurs. How ever, the point of maximum curvature is a variable depending on the units and scales of the load and settlement. Therefore, to obtain a unique maximum curvature point, both the load and settlement must be normalized by proper parameters, respectively, and be expressed on the same scaled arses(1:1). Normalization has been processed so that the yield load by the new interpretation is to be close to the average of yield loads interpreted by other methods investigated in this study. The quantitative comparison between the new criterion and other conventitonal methods is presented.

  • In this paper, we propose a new automatic pipe grading algorithm for an efficient management of transmission pipe under the ground. Since the conventional transmission pipe evaluation was conducted by subjective decision made by an individual operator, it was difficult to grade them by means of numerical methods and also hard to realistically construct numerical database system. To solve these problems, we Int obtain some information on the current condition of pipes' sections by shooting laser beam at a regular rate and then apply grading algorithm after complete calculation of minimum diameter of pipe. We use some of preprocessing techniques to reduce noise and also use various color models to consider special conditions of each inner pipe. The measurement of pipes' minimum diameter and decision of grade are performed through a detailed processing stages. By some experimental results performed in the field, we show that over 90 percent of correct grade decisions are made by the proposed algorithm.

  • Complete dryness inside the stator is a necessary and sufficient condition for the leak test. Microcracks caused by high cycle fatigue due to operation are generated in stator windings, and they are interrupted by water molecules during the leak test. For this reason, during leak test, the wrong value is indicated when there are no leaks in stator windings. Generator manufacturers presents unique dryness judgment criteria for the leak test, but there is no actual criterion that accurately indicates the dryness point for the leak test. The reason is because stator winding has a complex structure and the absence of effective dryness equipment in power plants. This paper proposes a dryness judgment criterion to evaluate if inside the stator winding is dried completely and presents experimental results.
