  • This study estimated a wide range of stochastic process models using the frameworks of CKLS (1992) and Nowman and Wang (2001). For empirical analysis, the GMM estimation procedure is adopted for the monthly Brent crude oil prices from January 1996 to January 2005. Using the simulated price series, European call option premiums were calculated and compared each other. The empirical results suggest that the crude oil price has a strong dependency of volatility on the price level. Contrary to the results of previous related studies, it shows a weak tendency of mean reversion. In addition, the models provide different implications for pricing derivatives on crude oil.

  • This study uses a continuous autoregressive (CAR) model to analyze daily average temperature in six Korean metropolitan cities. Data period is Jan. 1, 1954 to Dec. 31, 2010 covering 57 years. Using a relative long time series reveals that the linear time trend components are all statistically significant in the six cities, which was not shown in previous studies. Particularly the plus sign of its coefficient implies the effect on Korea of the global warming. Unit-root test results are that the temperature time series are stationary without unit-root. It turns out that CAR(3) is suitable for stochastic component of the daily temperature. Since developing suitable continuous stochastic model of the underlying weather related variables is crucial in pricing the weather derivatives, the results in this study will likely prove useful in further future studies on pricing weather derivatives.

  • The traditional Black-Scholes model for option pricing is based on the assumption that the log-return of the underlying asset follows a Brownian motion. But this assumption has been criticized for being unrealistic. Thus, for the last 20 years, many attempts have been made to adopt different stochastic processes to derive new option pricing models. The option pricing models based on L$\acute{e}$vy processes are being actively studied originating from the Gerber-Shiu model driven by H. U. Gerber and E. S. W. Shiu in 1994. In 2004, G. H. L. Cheang derived an option pricing model under multiple L$\acute{e}$vy processes, enabling us to adopt drift and jumps to the Gerber-Shiu model, while Gerber and Shiu derived their model under one L$\acute{e}$vy process. We derive the Gerber-Shiu model which includes drift and jumps under L$\acute{e}$vy processes. By adopting a Gamma distribution, we expand the Heston model which was driven in 1993 to include jumps. Then, using KOSPI200 index option data, we analyze the price-fitting performance of our model compared to that of the Black-Scholes model. It shows that our model shows a better price-fitting performance.

  • Warrants are often described as call potions written tv firms on their own stock. However, a call option is a pure side bet; i.e., none of the cash flows associated with the call's sale or exercise involves the firm. Issuing warrants on the other hand, can affect the firm's aggregate level of investment, composition of its capital structure. and the price of the stock on which warrant can be exercised. The problem of the warrant pricing can be solved by using of multivariate data analysis techniques, such as regression analysis or discriminant analysis, instead of OPM. The value of this approach is that we can evlauate the relative importance of each independent variable which affect a price of a warrant. This study empirically examines the Japanese warrant pricing by multiple regression analysis using a sample or 300 observations traded on Tokyo Stock Exchange during the periods between 1995 and 1996.

  • There have been arguments in Korea that fair value accounting system improves quality of accounting information through the asset revaluation. These arguments are based on the fact that investors prefer fair value to cost value information. Others argue that cost principles may offer more proper information to the investors because financial statements applied the cost principles are more objective and thus more reliable. Prior researches focused mainly on the motives of asset revaluation but I examined the effects of the tangible asset revaluation on the stock prices. The empirical findings indicate that : (1) the gains on the tangible asset revaluation are positively correlated with the stock prices; (2) the net book values applied the cost principles explain stock prices better than the net book values applied fair values. My findings suggest that the gains on the tangible asset revaluation constitute a part of the firms' values but the accounting informations measured fair value are not always useful to the investors in the capital market.

  • The purpose of this study is to review the various valuation techniques of intangible assets. The value of intangible asset by the income approach can be measured as the present value of the economic benefit over the intangible asset's remaining useful life. The typical methods used in intangible asset economic income projections include extrapolation method, life cycle analyses, sensitivity analyses, simulation analyses, judgment method, and tabula rasa method. There are several methods available for estimating capitalization rates and discount rates for intangible asset, in which we have discussed market extraction method, capital asset pricing model, built-up method, discounted cash flow model, and weighted average cost of capital method. As the capitalization methods for intangible asset, relief-from-royalty method, excess earnings capitalization method, profit split method, residual from business enterprise method, postulated loss of income method and so on have been reviewed.

  • This paper examines the relationship between information risk and equity premium in the Korean stock market. We use accruals quality as a proxy of information risk. Accruals quality (AQ) is estimated by Dechow and Dichev (2002) model, and then AQfactor is constructed based on the estimated AQ. Time-series and cross-sectional regression models are used to examine the relationship between information risk and equity premium, reflecting the critics of Core et al. (2008). The result of the paper shows that information risk proxied by accruals quality is not priced in equity premium in the Korean stock market. This result is consistent with Core et al. (2008) for US firms, but different with Francis et al. (2005) for US firms and Gray et al. (2008) for Australia firms. Also, the result shows that AQfactor is closely correlated with firm characteristic variables such as firm size. This implies that the effect of AQ on equity premium is more likely to arise from the pricing error due to firm characteristics rather than from an unknown risk factor.

  • This purpose of paper is to propose a European option pricing formula when the rate of return follows the leptokurtic distribution instead of normal. This distribution explains well the volatility smile and furthermore the option prices calculated under the leptokurtic distribution are shown to be closer to the market prices than those of Black-Scholes model. We make an estimation of the implied volatility and kurtosis to verify the fitness of the pricing formula that we propose here.

  • This study aims at analyzing the performance of Real Estate Investment Trusts(REITs) by Risk Adjustment Model. The main results are as follows. Firstly, most property types of REITs gain positive(+) excess overall returns at first and second period. On the contrary, most property types of REITs gain negative(-) excess overall returns and their standard deviations are larger at financial crisis period. Secondly, lodging, regional mall and commercial mortgage show lower risk-lower return, and freestanding, apartment and specialty show higher risk-higher return than average REITs, according to the CAPM results of . Moreover CAPM results of show the characteristics of REITs as investment commodities changes into higher risk-higher return for financial crisis period. Lastly, risk adjusted demanded returns of REITs are affected positively(+) by systemic risks and negatively(-) by unsystemic risks, according to the Risk Adjustment Model results of both and . Comparing risk adjusted demanded returns of REITs with their realized returns, healthcare reveals the largest outperformance.
