Objective: This study controlled the SES(Socio Economic Status) in order to compare the influence of infants' nonverbal communication ability and teachers' sensitivity on the infants' adjustment to child care centers. Methods: For this study, data was collected 115 mothers with one-year-olds'(58 boys, 57 girls) and from 115 teachers from fourty-eight child care centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Provincet data. The collected data were analyzed by correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 23.0 program. The results of this study are as follows. Results: First, infants' adjustment to child care centers showed a statistically significant relationship with infants' nonverbal communication ability and teachers' sensitivity. Second, among the variables explaining infants' adjustment to child care centers, the effect of teachers' sensitivity was higher than the effect of infants' nonverbal communication ability. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed that teachers' sensitivity is a strong factor explaining infants' adjustment to child care centers. We also emphasized the importance of the role of teachers, providing basic data on the development of education for child care teachers and education for improving sensitivity.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of toddler's temperament and toddler-teacher relationship on their peer interaction, focusing on gender differences. A total of 221 toddlers(122 boys and 99 girls) attending 16 child care centers in South Korea participated in this study. Each toddler was observed during a free-play period in the classroom over 4 sessions of 5 minutes, so a total of 20 minutes was measured. Two observers scored recorded observation scenes with two peer interaction criteria, including interaction initiation and interaction participation level. The main results of this study are as follows: First, there was a signigicant gender difference in peer interaction and toddler's temperament and toddler-teacher relationship. Second, the factor of toddler-teacher relationship significantly predicted the boys' peer interaction, while for the girls, the significant predictor was intentional control of temperamental factors. Further, implications for different approaches according to the gender difference of the affecting factor on toddlers' peer interaction have been discussed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and retention period of immediate remediation for infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in child care teachers. Methods: This study used a nonequivalent comparison pre- and post-test design to measure knowledge about and confidence in infant CPR and an interrupted time-series design to determine skill performance. The experimental group (n=25) received both immediate remediation and video learning for infant CPR, and the comparison group (n=28) received video learning only. Knowledge and confidence were measured before and after 4 weeks. Their skill performance was tested immediately, and 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks after intervention. Data analysis consisted of ${\chi}^2$ tests, t-tests, paired t-tests, and a generalized linear mixed model. Results: There were significant increases in knowledge and confidence within the experimental group. Skill performance showed a significant difference according to the group factor (F=10.81, p=.002) and measurement time (F=146.80, p<.001). The experimental group maintained significantly higher skill performance than did the comparison group. Conclusion: These findings support the necessity of immediate remediation education for infant CPR to maintain skill performance. In addition, appropriate renewal time and the improvement of training programs for child care teachers are necessary.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of infant temperament on adaptation at childcare centers and the moderated effects of teacher-infant relationships between a vertical transition group and horizontal transition group. Methods: The subjects of the study were 284 infants, aged 1-years-old and 2-years-old, who were hospitalized in childcare centers. To investigate the correlation between variables, Pearson correlation analysis was used. Regression analysis was performed to check the effects of temperament and teacher-infant relationship on childcare adaptation. Results: Infant temperament influenced childcare adaptation in both vertical and horizontal transition groups. The quality of teacher-infant relationships was found to moderate the relationship between infant temperament and childcare adaptation in both groups. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study, which showed different moderating effects of the teacher-infant relationship in the vertical transfer group and the horizontal transfer group, suggest the need for more diverse studies on the various transition experiences regarding childcare transition.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of childcare teachers' active motivation for choosing a profession on the quality of their interaction with infants and toddlers, and to investigate the moderating effect of their emotional dysregulation. Methods: The subjects of this study were childcare teachers working with infants and toddlers. A mobile survey was conducted and a total of 282 sets of results have been collected. Moderating effects have been explored with the use of PROCESS Macro (version 3.5) Model 1. Results: The main findings showed that childcare teachers' emotional dysregulation played a moderating role in the effect of childcare teachers' active motivation on the quality of interaction with infants and toddlers. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study imply that the ability of childcare teachers working with infants and toddlers to regulate their emotions can simultaneously play a role as a protective factor as well as a risk factor for the quality of interaction. Also, it was revealed that is necessary to give pre-service teachers an opportunity to deliberate on their motivations for a childcare teacher position.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of children's characteristics and childcare teachers' attributes on the frequency and level of imaginative play in two-year-old classrooms. Methods: The study involved 191 toddlers, their mothers, and 32 teachers from childcare centers. Toddler characteristics encompassed temperament along with demographic variables such as gender and age. Teacher' attributes related to play included playfulness, play-support belief, and interactions with toddlers. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 22.0 and HLM 8.2 software, employing basic analysis, hierarchical linear analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: First, as toddlers' age increased, both the frequency and level of their imaginative play increased. Second, individual-level model analysis revealed a positive effect of toddlers' extroversion on the level of imaginative play. Third, the class-level model results indicated that teachers' emotions had a negative effect, whereas their encouragement positively influenced the level of imaginative play. Conclusion/Implications: The significance of this study lies in its utilization of a multilayered model analysis, which offers a more robust examination of variable influences by accounting for hierarchical data structures.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of teachers' knowledge of infant development and efficacy of child care on perception of professionalism. The participants of this study were 264 child care teachers who were in charge of infants in child care centers in Gyunggi Province. Instruments to measure teachers' knowledge of infant development, efficacy of child care and perception of professionalism as teachers were used in this study and the data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, the hierarchical regression, and the structural equation model analysis by AMOS. Based on the hierarchical regression, efficacy of child care influenced on perception of professionalism rather than knowledge of infant development. The moderation effect of efficacy of child care existed in the relationship between teachers' knowledge of infant development and perception of professionalism.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parent-teacher relationships on mothers' parenting efficacy especially for toddlers. Methods: 225 mothers of toddlers completed questionnaires on parent-teacher relationships and parenting efficacy. This study used technical statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis in order to analyze the collected data. Results: First, there was a significant correlation between parent-teacher relationships and mothers' parenting efficacy. Second, the parent-teacher relationships was an important factor in predicting mothers' parenting efficacy. In particular, when a teacher and mother develop practical collaboration for caring for and educating a child, the mothers' parenting efficacy was higher. Conclusion/Implications: These findings indicate that the parent-teacher relationship is a significant factor in order to improve the quality of parenting. The results especially support the importance of collaboration between teachers and parents and suggest that we need to find practical ways for collaborating in the field. Limitations of this study and implications for future research were discussed.
