  • This study aimed to investigate teacher learning in the context of a community. For the purpose of this study, two research questions about the kinds of teacher noticing in a community and the role of partnership were addressed. To build a learning community, a professional development project, PRIME, established partnerships with 11 high schools and one of the cluster meetings were investigated in this study. Three mentor teachers, three preservice teachers, and one university supervisor participated in the cluster meeting. For this study, the multiple data such as audio tapes of cluster meetings, observation notes, and interviews were analyzed using the analysis of narratives. The results showed that the participants engaged in different kinds of noticing of their own beliefs about teaching and learning, teacher practices, and teacher identities including noticing of students' understanding in classroom situations. The partnership played the crucial role of reinforcing relationships among teachers, assigning tasks, and creating various communities.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate Korean science teachers' perception of the current science teacher preparation courses in Korea, especially focused on subjects of science education, and to induce implications for improvement of in-service program for science teachers. To do this, a questionnaire was developed by the authors and administered to the 215 science teachers sampled nationwide. The study concluded that science teachers perceived that the two compulsory subjects, 'science education theories' and 'science teaching-learning materials and teaching methods' were not enough for a professional science teacher. Particularly, they consisently insisted that more practices under the relationship with teaching science in schools were necessary when learning subjects of science education. Based on science teachers' response, we recommended that the following 4 subjects should be added in the course of pre-service program for science teachers: 'Development of experiment/demonstration devices', 'Teaching creativity and education for the gifted in science', 'Development of science teaching materials', and 'Science inquiry learning and teaching'.

  • This study aims to investigate how learning materials are used in an outstanding English class and to analyze learning materials and their use in primary English classroom activities. To this end, An Analytic Scheme of Learning Materials Use (ASLMU) is used to quantify utilization patterns of learning materials. The findings are: Learning materials are most actively used in the development period, followed by introduction and consolidation. The teacher's rate of using learning materials is much higher than student's, and the rate of using materials for whole students is higher than the rate of using materials for an individual or groups. It requires developing learning materials toward more a student-centered class because the teacher's occupancy of the learning materials is fourfold compared to the student's occupancy. Also, non-language materials are used more than language materials, and English materials are used more than Korean materials. Most of the materials are used to present a question and explain. The findings of the study are expected to suggest features of learning materials in an outstanding English class and application method of learning materials to primary English teachers.

  • This study conducted an online survey to understand what elementary school teachers think about the learning contents of elementary science education subjects needed to train elementary science teachers suitable for the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. The results are as follows: First, there were many elementary school teachers who thought that the current learning content of elementary science education was not suitable for the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution and that it needed to modify the learning content. Many of the teachers said that the learning content of the subject did not include the characteristics of the 4th Industrial Revolution, but also did not reflect the changes of the times and remained in the past. Second, the content that elementary school teachers thought was important in training elementary school teachers suitable for the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution was mainly related to the interests and curiosity of students, and scientific experiments or inquiry. On the contrary, the items that they thought should be deleted or reduced included science learning theory, science teaching/learning model, nature of science, and guidance for gifted children. Third, the contents that elementary school teachers thought needed to be added as learning content of elementary science education subjects were SSI education, science education-related social change and future prediction, advanced science technology, STEAM guidance, and integrated education within the science field. Fourth, in order to train elementary school teachers suitable for the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the contents that they thought should be introduced first as learning content of elementary science education subjects were SSI education, integrated education within the science field, STEAM guidance, and core competencies. Other contents that need to be introduced were software education, safety education, and project learning methods.

  • It is one of the fundamental issues that students in teaching and learning process should take a proactive role in school mathematics. Inquiry or discovery learning in school mathematics is the specific method for students to participate in lessons on their own initiative, which is supported by many scholars in mathematics education. In this paper, we investigate pre-service teachers' perspectives of Inquiry or discovery learning by intensively analyzing information and guided orientation in teaching practice. From this, we find the direction of the pre-service teacher training program for carrying out pre-service teachers' role to help students to take a proactive role in school mathematics.

  • This study examined the changes of preservice biology teachers' NOS pedagogical content knowledge through two consecutive science methods courses: NOS understandings; attitudes toward teaching science; difficulties of NOS teaching; NOS teaching strategies; and views of orientation of NOS teaching. During the science methods course I, the preservice teachers engaged in discussions and reflections on what science is and how scientific knowledge has produced, drawing NOS aspects from episodes of history of science, and planning the lessons cooperating NOS instructional objectives. Then the next semester, through the science methods course II, the preservice teachers had a chance of the simulated teaching by adopting NOS teaching and learning activities in the context of the secondary biology context. The preservice teachers, further, reflected on their NOS teaching. The results showed that the preservice teachers constructed the NOS pedagogical content knowledge. They significantly improved their views of NOS and its teaching(p<.05) after the science methods course I, and retained their understanding after the science methods course II(p>.05). The preservice teachers mentioned the difficulties of teaching NOS in the secondary biology context, and further suggested effective NOS teaching methods in their reflective journals.
