  • Force induced by the natural ventilation in tunnel is likely to generate adverse influences on the airflow during the normal operation and create even more unfavorable circumstances during the tunnel fire. The influence of the natural ventilation is required to take into account in designing and operating the ventilation as well as safety systems. The magnitude of natural ventilation force depends on a variety of factors associated with the topographical, meteorological and physical features of tunnel. Unfortunately, at this moment those are difficult to quantify and none of the countries has suggested its estimation method in the design guideline. This study aims at quantifying the natural ventilation force at a local highway tunnel by three different methods. The first method employes direct measurement of the pressure at portals, while the second applies a stepwise approach to eliminate the piston effect ahead of deriving the natural ventilation force and the third method uses the concept of barometric barrier.

  • This investigation proposes a new method to overcome disadvantages of panorama VR that is oriented toward spacial information and Object VR that is oriented toward object itself and consequently to make 3D virtual reality (VR) contents efficiently by using image based approach. 3D VR contents provide satisfactory qualities to users but 3D modeling is complex and elaborative and requires high cost. So, this paper aims at reducing tremendous efforts for making 3D VR by substituting 3D modeling with 'advanced Billboard'(we call it Smart Billboard). Smart Billboard has a mechanism for selecting an adequate mapping image that is observable at each user viewpoint and carry on texture mapping into the Billboard. And it is validated with the practical embodiments of a virtual museum in which the exhibitions are prepared by Smart Billboard.

  • Jakarta Slide is a WebDAV server developed as one of Apache projects, which supports asynchronous authoring for various contents on the server. Unfortunately, since the WebDAV protocol does not explicitly provide the workspaces for user groups, it is difficult to support complicated collaboration using Jakarta Slide. The CoSlide system is an extension of Jakarta Slide to address this problem, presenting more effective collaborative environment by providing various workspaces for group collaboration. In this paper, we describe the CoJBother Messenger for the CoSlide collaborative system. We developed CoJBother by extending the JBother messenger based on the standard Jabber protocol. To support the users and groups defined on the CoSlide system, we also extended the Jabber protocol. CoJBother shows the information on the CoSlide users and groups in addition to the standard Jabber users and groups. In particular, through CoJBother, the members of a group on CoSlide can initiate group chatting without any administrative overhead.

  • Numerical modeling and inversion for electromagnetic exploration methods are essential to understand behaviour of electromagnetic fields in complex subsurface. In this study, a finite element method was adopted as a numerical scheme for the 2.5-dimensional forward problem. And a finite element equation considering linear conductivity variation was proposed, when 2.5-dimensional differential equation to couple eletric and magnetic field was implemented. Model parameters were investigated for near-field with large source effects and far-field with responses dominantly by homogeneous half-space. Numerical responses by this study were compared with analytic solutions in homogeneous half-space. Blocky inversion model was modified to be applied to the forward calculation in this study and it was also adopted in the inversion algorithm. Resolution for isolated bodies were investigated to confirm possibility and limitation of inversion for electromagnetic exploration data.

  • As the data traffic between ships and a land station continuously increase through the shipbuilding-IT convergence, several wireless communication technologies are being studied to process large amounts of data traffic. In particular, the multi-antenna system is one of the most expected technologies to provide high throughput. This paper proposes an algorithm for the base station to select the ship in consideration of channel characteristics and the transmission angle for a beam of the land station in spatial multiplexing marine communication systems. We increase the system capacity by maximizing the received signal strength of the ship using clustering characteristic of the radio channel. Also, we reduce the time to select the ship by excluding the ship with the large interference between the beams. On our computer simulation, the proposed scheme dramatically reduces the computational complexity with a little sacrifice of the throughput.

  • A 3D-ray tracing tool is a software considering reflection, penetration, and diffraction of the signals to provide accuracy. To provide communication resources effectively, communication standards adopt Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) that includes small cells. A 3D performance evaluation methodology becomes more and more important since the coverage of the small cell networks is narrower than that of the macro cell networks. It is difficult to directly apply conventional 2D mathematical models due to the complexity of small cell network; since they have many considerations such as topography, placement of buildings and 3D beamforming techniques. In this paper, we introduce an effective performance evaluation methodology for small cell networks using 3D-ray tracing tool. From simulation results, we conclude that new performance evaluation methodologies by using 3D-ray tracing tool is more suitable than conventional methodology for small cell networks.

  • This study estimates tunnel face pressure through existing 8 analytical equations and 3D numerical analysis, and compares and examines it. In general, the estimating tunnel face pressure of domestic shield TBM has been examined by a method according to analytical equation and empirical method, but numerical analysis is combined in a section passing complicated stratigraphic condition and special soil condition. Therefore, the researcher is to find a reliable method to examine of tunnel face pressure by confirming a correlation between tunnel face pressure estimated by equation and tunnel face pressure estimated by numerical analysis program. When tunnel face pressure is estimated, both analytical equation and numerical analysis were identically examined in soil conditions such as sandy soil and cohesive soil. In addition, existing analytical equation is used as equation, and 3D analysis copying construction process and shield tunnel as numerical analysis.

  • The structural anisotropy and heterogeneity of rock mass, caused by discontinuities and weak zones, have a great influence on the deformation behavior of a tunnel. A tunnel construction in these complex ground conditions is very difficult. No matter how excellent a geological investigation is, local uncertainties of rock mass conditions still remain. Under these uncertain circumstances, an accurate forecast of the ground conditions ahead of the advancing tunnel face is indispensable to a safe and economic tunnel construction. This paper presents the effect of anisotropy and heterogeneity of the rock masses to be excavated by numerical analysis. The influences of distance from weak zone, the size or dimension, the different stiffness and the orientation of weak zones are analysed by 3-D finite element analysis. By analysing these numerical results, the tunnel behavior due to excavation can be well understood and the prediction of rock mass condition ahead of the tunnel face can be possible.

  • The rock fracturing during waterjet cutting is very complicated because rock is inhomogeneous and anisotropic, compared with artificial materials (e.g., metal or glass). Thus, it is very important to verify the effects of rock properties on waterjet rock cutting performance. Properties affecting the rock cutting efficiency have been variously described in the literature, depending on the experimental conditions (e.g., water pressure, abrasive feed rate, or standoff distance) and rock-types studied. In this study, a rock-property-related literature review was performed to determine the key properties important for waterjet rock cutting. Porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, and hardness of the rock were determined to be the key properties affecting waterjet rock cutting. The results of this analysis can provide the basic knowledge to determine the cutting efficiency of waterjet rock cutting technology for rock excavation-related construction.

  • An analysis to allocate storage space for sediment accumulation during the economic life of the reservoir is required in the planning or design of a reservoir. This analysis has been the most difficult and tedious aspect to deal with reservoir sedimentation because of the interaction between the various parameters related to the hydraulics of flow, reservoir operating policy, inflowing sediment load. The approach to analyzing spatial distribution of deposits has relied on empirical methods, all of which required a great deal of simplification from the actual physical phenomena. For the purpose of this study, reservoir sedimentation rate computed by Empirical Area Reduction Method is compared with measuring rate along the Soyang-gang Dam. As a conclusion, reservoir sedimentation rate can be estimated exactly by Empirical Area Reduction Method.
