  • In this study, to measure the density and moisture of compaction, it is designed to use the 2 neutron and 5 gamma-ray detectors. Also, it can be know that Co-60 gamma-ray and Cf-252 neutron source are more useful for this system, because discharge of radiation are better than other sources. They are more profitable to improve their accuracy. Especially, to remove the interference of their reciprocal action between neutron and gamma-ray detectors it is designed shield materials with lead between 2 neutron and 5 gamma-ray detectors each other. It is performed the optimal design to shield under the suggested values completely. Because this system will use portable, so decrease of their weight are so important. For this reason, it can be decrease their weight of 5.2[kg] with shield material between each detectors and it can be think mote easy to carry and use on the industrial Spot.

  • We report a simple technique for direct neutron spectroscopy using pure LaCl3 crystals. Pure LaCl3 crystals exhibit considerably better pulse shape discrimination (PSD) capabilities with relatively good energy resolution as compared with Ce-doped LaCl3 crystals. Single crystals of pure and Ce-doped LaCl3 were grown using an inhouse-developed Bridgman furnace. PSD capabilities of these crystals were investigated using 241Am and 137Cs sources. Fast neutron detection was tested using a252Cf source and three separate bands corresponding to electron, proton, and alpha were observed. The proton band induced by the 35Cl(n,p)35S reaction can be used for direct neutron spectroscopy because proton energy is proportional to incident neutron energy. Owing to good scintillation performance and excellent PSD capabilities, pure LaCl3 is a promising candidate for space detectors and other applications that necessitate gamma/fast neutron discrimination capability.

  • Neutron induced prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) offers a nondestructive, sensitive and relatively rapid method for the determination of trace and major elements and is proven to be convenient for online analysis of minerals, metals, coal, cement, petrochemical, coating, paper as well as many other materials and products. The technique has found many uses in medicine, industry, research, security and the detection of contraband items. This report reviews the present status and future trends of the PGAA techniques. Requirements for the system are neutron source, high resolution HPGe detectors with a high-voltage power supply, an amplifier, analog-to-digital converter, and a multichannel analyzer for the detection and measurement of prompt ${\gamma}$-ray emit form the neutron capture elements. Introducing a ${\gamma}$-${\gamma}$ coincidence system also improves the quality of the ${\gamma}$-ray spectrum by suppressing the background created from the Compton scattering of high energy prompt ${\gamma}$-rays. A PGAA system using a $^{252}Cf$ neutron source is currently under construction for the on-line measurement of several elements in aqueous samples at KAERI. The system can be applied for the detection of chemical weapons and explosives as well as various narcotics.

  • ICRP recommended that cosmic ray exposure to the pilot and cabin crew would be considered as an occupational exposure due to their relatively high exposure. Since 2012 with the Act No. 10908 (Natural radiation management), the guideline of cosmic ray exposure to the pilot was established in Korea. The applicability of the solid-state nuclear track detector for personal dose assessment of pilot and cabin crew was evaluated. Dose linearity and angle dependence of dosimeters to the neutron were evaluated by $^{252}Cf$ neutron emitting source. The track density has a good agreement with the dose ($r^2$=0.99) and highly dependent on the degree of an angular of the dosimeter to the neutron source. In addition, the dosimeters (SSNTD) were exposed to cosmic ray in an aircraft during its cruising for more than two months in collaboration with Airline Pilots Association of Korea. Although the correlation between the track density from aircraft cruising altitude and expected neutron dose is low, however RSNS dosimeter could be used for personal neutron dosimeter. For application of RSNS as a personal dosimeter for pilot and cabin crew, additional studies are required.

  • Organic scintillators are widely used for neutron/gamma detection. Pulse shape discrimination algorithms have been commonly used to discriminate the detected radiations. These algorithms have several limits, in particular with plastic scintillator which has lower discrimination ability, compared to liquid scintillator. Recently, machine learning (ML) models have been explored to enhance discrimination performance. Nevertheless, obtaining an accurate ML model or evaluating any discrimination approach requires a reference neutron dataset. The preparation of this is challenging because neutron sources are also gamma-ray emitters. Therefore, this paper proposes a pipeline to prepare clean labeled neutron/gamma datasets acquired by an organic scintillator. The method is mainly based on a Time of Flight setup and Tail-to-Total integral ratio (TTTratio) discrimination algorithm. In the presented case, EJ276 plastic scintillator and 252Cf source were used to implement the acquisition chain. The results showed that this process can identify and remove mislabeled samples in the entire ToF spectrum, including those that contribute to peak values. Furthermore, the process cleans ToF dataset from pile-up events, which can significantly impact experimental results and the conclusions extracted from them.

  • The burnup profile of spent fuel should be determined accurately for the safety storage of spent fuel. In this study, a neutron detection system was developed as a part of basic research to analyze the burnup profile of spent fuel, and a performance was evaluated using a radiation source. The prototype of the neutron detection system was based on a 3He proportional chamber. The 3He proportional chamber is often used for neutron measurement and analysis because of its high neutron detection efficiency and simplicity for gamma ray rejection. For quantitative evaluation, tests were conducted using calibrated 252Cf and 137Cs sources. In the performance evaluation, a field applicability was verified by analyzing the detection characteristics according to the nuclide.

  • A TL pellet for a neutron dose measurement (KCT-306) by embedding a $^6Li$-compound into a $CaSO_4:Dy$ phohphor was developed based upon the technical information of KCT-300. The KCT-300 is an another kind of $CaSO_4:Dy$ TL detector shich was developed at KAERI, in which small amounts of $NH_4H_2PO_4$ have been emvedded as a binding material. This paper presented the optimized manufacturing condition of KCT-306 and compared its sensitivity with that of the commercialized neutron TL pellets. $CaSO_4:Dy$ Phosphor with grain size ranging less than $45{\mu}m$ are used for the KCT-306. The optimum $CaSO_4:Dy$ TL phosphor, $^6Li$-compounds and P-compound as the binding material are determined as 20-40wt%, 50-70wt% and 20wt%. The TL pellet combination of our KCT-306/KCT-300, TLD-600/TLD-700 and TLD-600H/TLD-700H(Harshaw) have been irradiated in the neutron/gamma mixed fields from a $D_2O$ moderated $^{252}Cf$ neutron source. The KCT-300, TLD-700 and TLD-700H were used at the same time as gamma ray discriminators in the neutron/gamma mixed fields. It was found that the neutron/gamma response ratios of KCT-306/KCT-300, which were developed in this study, were approximately 4 times higher than those of the commercial TLD-600H/TLD-700H.

  • Polymers have become widely used substrate materials for shielding neutron rays because of their high hydrogen content and easy processing procedures. Rare-earth materials are also being gradually adopted as neutron absorbers because of their considerable thermal neutron absorption cross-sections. This paper utilizes the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation program to compare the shielding effects of various polymers and rare-earth oxides on neutron rays across different energy ranges. The study investigates the superior shielding materials for neutron radiation in each energy range. Subsequently, a series of materials are simulated by combining the preferred shielding materials for neutron rays in each energy range, exploring the influence of material composition and composite structure on the effectiveness of neutron ray shielding. It is revealed that the preferred material for shielding neutron rays changes for different energy ranges. For low-energy neutron rays, rare-earth oxides such as Sm2O3 and Gd2O3 demonstrate the most effective shielding, whereas for high-energy neutron rays, polyethylene (PE) provides the best shielding performance. Materials with different compositions show varying preferred structures when dealing with a 252Cf neutron source. However, in mitigating the secondary gamma rays generated during the neutron shielding process, stacked-type materials exhibit the most effective shielding performance.

  • Background: As neutron fields are always accompanied by gamma rays, it is essential to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays in the detection of neutrons. Neutrons and gamma rays can be separated by pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods. Recently, we performed characterization of a stilbene scintillator detector and an EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector with a high-speed digitizer DT5730 and investigated optimized PSD variables for both detectors. This study is for providing a basis for developing fast neutron/gamma-ray dual-particle imager. Materials and Methods: We conducted PSD experiments using stilbene scintillator and EJ-301 liquid scintillator and evaluated neutron and gamma ray discriminability of each PSD method with a $^{137}Cs$ gamma source and a $^{252}Cf$ neutron source. We implemented digital signal processing techniques to apply two PSD methods - the charge comparison (CC) method and the constant time discrimination (CTD) method - to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays. We tried to find optimized PSD variables giving the best discriminability in a given experimental condition. Results and Discussion: For the stilbene scintillator detector, the charge comparison method and the constant time discrimination method both delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.7. For the EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector, both PSD methods delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.79. With the same PSD variables, PSD performance was excellent in $300{\pm}100keVee$, $500{\pm}100keVee$, and $700{\pm}100keVee$ energy regions. This result shows that we can achieve an effective discrimination of neutrons from gamma rays using these scintillator detector systems. Conclusion: We applied both PSD methods to a stilbene and a liquid scintillator and optimized the PSD performance represented by FOM values. We observed a good separation performance of both scintillators combined with a high-speed digitizer and digital PSD. These results will provide reference values for the dual-particle imager we are developing, which can image both fast neutrons and gamma rays simultaneously.
