Objectives : This study was prepared for investigating the clinical features of stroke patients. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 75 patients who were admitted to Department of Internal Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Kyung-Won University with a diagnosis of stroke from Jan. 1, 2005 to Dec. 31, 2005. Results : Ischemic stroke(include TIA, 93.3%) was more common than hemorrhagic stroke(6.7%). The incidence in male was 36.0%, in female was 64.0% and the most prevalent age group is over-sixties. Cerebral infarction was most frequently noticed in MCA-infarction and hemorrhage in putamen & thalamus. Hypertention, the most preceding diseases, followed by diabetes mellitus and CVA. The rate of recurrence was 21.3%. Cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage was much occurred after rising. The most patients visited the hospital within 24 Hours. The most common symptoms in admission time were motor weakness and speech disorder. The complication was mostly urinary tract inflamation. Conclusions : Our study on CVA patients was similar to previous studies from 1994 to 2004. In most cases, western and oriental treatment and medicine were given synthetically.

Objectives : This study was done to investigate the relationship between Sasang constitution and the facial skin in acute stroke patients Methods : In the time of period Mar. 2007 to Jun. 2007, 103 patients with stroke admitted in the department of Internal Medicine of Kyungwon University Seoul Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyungwon University Incheon Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyunghee University Oriental Medical Hospital, Dongguk Il-san Oriental Medical Hospital were included. We assessed the type of Sasang constitution, and the type of Sasang constitution of 51 patients were confirmed. We investigated general characteristics, stroke type and the relationship between Sasang constitution and the facial skin. Results : The color of face have no significant differences by Sasang constitution. But So-yang have blue and purple colored lips than So-eum and Tae-eum have. Conclusions : In this study, we found the relationship between Sasang constitution and the facial skin in acute stroke patients. But it seems necessary to investigate more cases to concrete conclusion on this theme.

Objectives : This study was done to investigate the relationship of drinking and Dampness-Phlegm pattern in acute stroke patients. Methods : In the time of period Mar. 2007 to Jun. 2007, 103 patients with stroke admitted in the department of Internal Medicine of Kyungwon University Seoul Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyungwon University Incheon Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyunghee University Oriental Medical Hospital, Dongguk Il-san Oriental Medical Hospital were included. Patients were hospitalized within a month after the onset of stroke. Stroke patients were interviewed by residents who studied standard operation procedures in Fundamental Study for Standardization and Objectification of Differentiation and Pattern Identification of Syndrome of Oriental Medicine for Stroke. A questionnaire was completed by a question-and-answer form between patients and residents after explanation details to patients and the agreement of patients. Results : Drinking subjects have tendency of Dampness-Phlegm Pattern(p=0.096), but don't have statistical significance(p<0.05). Conclusions : In this study, we found the relationship of drinking and Dampness-Phlegm Pattern. To acquire more concrete conclusion on this theme, we need more research.

Objectives : This study was aimed to assess the distribution of metabolic syndrome according to Sasang constitution(SC) in acute stroke patients. Methods : We assessed the type of SC of acute stroke patients in the oriental medical hospitals of 3 universities located in metropolitan region from October 2005 to June 2007 by Ouestionnaire for the Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCC II). Then, we investigated the general characteristics, the prevalence of each factor of the metabolic syndrome and the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome according to SC. Results : 338 subjects were included into the final analysis. 1. This study showed that the proportion of So-yang was highest of all constitutions(45.9%). 2. The prevalence of high TG, low HDL-chol, high BP, high FBS of Tae-um were higher than those of the other constitutions, but the differencecs were not statistically significant. The prevalence of high WC of Tae-um was significantly higher than other constitutions(p<0.001). 3. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome of Tae-um was significantly higher than other constitutions (p=0.002). Conclusion : There were significant differences in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to SC in acute stroke patients. For the further research, it seems to be necessary to construct fundamental databases for stroke by increasing the number of patients and by diagnosing SC more delicately.

Objectives and methods : The Euibujipsung is one of the huge-scale encyclopedias about Oriental Medicine. To search the most frequently used aupoints for dysarthria after stroke, we used Euibujipsung CD-ROM database with several chinese character keyword concerned with vernal function(語, 言, 音, 啞, 瘖, etc). Results : We found four popular acupoints(PC5, GV20, GV16, TE6), and five meridians (Governor vessel, Gall Bladder, Heart, Large Intestine and Triple Energizer). We also found that the extra meridians were used more frequently than other type of meridians. Conclusion : We think that these findings can give further ideas to clinical practice and research fields for stroke rehabilitation in Oriental medicine.

Objective : To report cases of patients with Parkinson's syndrome. Design : Case-series Patients and methods : 35 of patients with Parkinson's syndrome who visited Department of Cardiovascular and Neurologic Diseases of Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center were treated by acupuncture and herbal medicine from May until December 2007. 35 patients were participated in this study. 21 patients were dropped out during the trial, and we evaluated symptom progress of 14 patients by using several questionnaires such as Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS), modified Hoehn & Yahr stage (H&Y stage) and Schwab & England ADL scale(S&E ADL scale). Results : The whole group consists of 14 male patients and 21 female patients. Mean±SD age range is 64.5±8.4. There were no significant differences of the demographic and clinical characteristics between the case group and drop-out group. The mean±SD medical treatment period of the Case group were 8.4±6.3weeks, the mean±SD of the total score in first medical treatment UPDRS section 1~3 were 29.6±11.0, the mean±SD of the final score were 27.1±12.6, all of which showed significant improvement(p=0.007). There were no significant changes on the H&Y stage and S&E ADL scale. Conclusion : Patients with Parkinson's syndrome who visited Department of Cardiovascular and Neurologic diseases of Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center had a tendency of showing improvement in clinical symptoms.

Many patients have difficulties after stroke. Spasticity is an important one of that difficulties. So in these days, its management is becoming a major issue in rehabilitation. Gagamyounjo-tang was administered to a patient have had spasticity after stroke include Hyulhu(血虛) symptoms. And check the modified Ashworth Scale, Motor grade and VAS for being in the hospital. After treated with Gagamyounjo-tang, Modified Ashworth Scale, Motor grade and VAS have improved, and most of all symptoms about hyulhu(血虛) was disappeared. Based on this result, this study shows that Gagamyounjo-tang was effective in spasticity after stroke especially included Hyulhu(血虛) symptoms.

Stroke is a disease which results in impairment of body functions and affects everyday life. The ability of cerebral neurons to become reorganized and restore function after damage is called plasticity. Motor impairment typically appears contralateral to the affected cerebral hemisphere in patients with cerebral lesions. The authors report a case of a patient with hemiplegia ipsilateral to affected cerebral hemisphere, along with its conjectured mechanism.

Drug eruption is a relatively commin dermatological disorder and may cause significant problems. The treatment is to stop using a drug that may cuase a drug eruption. In some cases, steroids and antihistamines can be used supportively. According to some reports, Onchungeum(溫淸飮) has steroid-like effects and antihistaminic effects. We administered Onchungeum(溫淸飮) a patient with severe itching because of a drug eruption. After administration of Onchungeum(溫淸飮), itching decreased to much degrees. It can be suggested that Onchungeum(溫淸飮) can be used to treat symptoms of allergic skin disease like a drug eruption.

Objective : Stroke patients tend to take antibiotics due to infection resulting from complication. One of many side effects from using antibiotics is diarrhea, which infact causes anaerobic organism dysfunction resulting Pseudo-Membranous Colitis (P.M.C). To treat P.M.C, antibiotics and antibacterial agents are usually used. But they may cause other side effects, therefore extreme caution must be taken. Methods : We treated an antibiotic induced P.M.C patient who diagnosed by sigmoid scopy with only Yijoong-tang (Lizhong-tang) without antibiotics and observed patients stool aspects. Results and Conclusion : Patiensts symptom was improved after 7days, and we can see the improvement by follow-up sigmoid scopy. This case may give us a possibility of that oriental medical treatments as complementary and alternative medicine to standard antibiotic treatment.
