Objectives : This Study was prepared for investigating the safety of oriental medicine and continuous intravenous urokinase combined therapy in acute cerebral infarction. Methods : We prospectively estimate safety of hemorrhagic transformation occurred in oriental medical therapy and continuous intravenous urokinase combined therapy. We estimate National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Score and Modified Barthel Index. Results : Hemorrhagic transformation was not noted. and Others are not fatal complication. Conclusions : oriental medical therapy and continuous intravenous urokinase combined therapy are safety method in treatment of acute cerebral infarction. We think this can be a good model of Oriental and western cooperative therapy.

Scutellaria Radix, originated from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, is one of the most important medicine in traditional Oriental medicine, and possesses anti-bacterial activity and sedative effects, can be applied in the treatment of a range of conditions including diarrhea and hepatitis. It is reported that chronic global ischemia induces neuronal damage in selective, vulnerable regions of the brain, especially the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. In the present study, to investigate the effect of Scutellaria Radix extract on cerebral disease, the changes of regional cerebral blood flow and pial arterial diameter on ischemia/reperfusion state was determinated by Laser-Doppler Flowmetry and some parameters concerned with oxidative stress also measured. When SRe were administered for five days with the concentration of 100 mg/kg, GSH activity significantly increased. But SRe administeration showed no significant change in lipid peroxidation. When the activities of CAT, Cu, Zn-SOD and GSH were measured, CAT and GSH were activated by SRe administration. When 1 and 3 ㎍/㎖ SRe was applied to the neuronal cell cultures, the quantities of LDH was significantly reduced when compared with cultures treated only with NMDA. Through this study, it can be concluded that the ischemia/reperfusion induced brain stress may have contributed to cerebral damage in rats, and the present study provides clear evidence for the beneficial effect of SRe on ischemia induced brain injury.

Objectives : The study was aimed to survey participant's characters in stroke prevention & Gigong program Methods : The data were collected 34 participants in stroke prevention & Gigong program. The questionnaires to survey characters in stroke prevention & Gigong program composed demographic item, past history, family history, stroke presymptoms, etiology, prevention, why join of Gigong program, etc. Results : Half of participants didn't know anything presymptoms, prevention for stroke. Conclusion : From these results, stroke education program have been improvement and it is needed further study to survey efficacy to stroke education program.

Object : The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether herbal medication may injure the liver function and kidney function in stroke patients. Method : We observed the serum AST, ALT, r-GTP, Creatinine, BUN of 78 patient from May 1. 2008 to June 30. 2009 admitted in Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University. Liver function and Kidney function tests were done on admission and before discharge. And all patients take herbal medicine with Western medicine. Result : AST, ALT, r-GTP, Creatinine, BUN decreased on discharge compared with the value on admission. The liver function and kidney function test score(AST, ALT, r-GTP, Creatinine, BUN) by administration period of herbal medication was not significantly changed. Conclusion : This study suggests that general herbal medication does not injure liver function and kidney function of human.

Objects : This study propose to compare on general characteristics of acute stroke patients between Fire-Heat group and Deficiency of Yin group. Method : We recruited acute stroke patient within 4 weeks after stroke admitted to Department of Internal Medicine of Kyunghee University Oriental Medicial Center, Dongguk University Ilsan Oriental Medical Center, Kyungwon University Songpa Oriental Medical Centar and Kyungwon University Incheon Oriental Medical Center from April 2007 to August 2009. We investigate age, sex, type of stroke, past history, general characteristics, smoking, drinking alcohol, marriage sasang constitution, etc. Result : It was significant different in sex, smoking, dringking alcohol and marriage between Fire-Heat group and Deficiency Yin group. We need more cases for another result that could associate with diagnosis of stroke. Conclusion : We found that Fire heat group was more associated with lifestyle than deficiency yin group. Further study will be needed to analysis for the diagnosis and the treatments of stroke.

Background and Objects : The environment of hospital have been changed rapidly. To adapt changes, it is needed to boost customer satisfaction. This study aims to investigate satisfaction of customer satisfaction program participants Method : After the one week customer satisfaction program was completed, we surveyed 50 participants. The questionnaire method was used in this study. The questionnaires item were sex, age, department, satisfaction, positive change, necessity and interval in customer satisfaction program. Results : The major results of the analysis were as follows Positive change after customer satisfaction program were 6.90±1.94. Necessity further customer satisfaction program were 7.74±2.09. Conclusions : Customer program should be needed and keep teaching to the staff.

Objectives : This study was aim to investigate the relationship between NIHSS and distribution of pattern identification in stroke patients. Methods : 1471 participants from the patients hospitalized for stroke within 4 weeks from April 2007 to August 2009 were included. They were grouped according to the NIHSS score; group 1 for the participants whose NIHSS were less than six, group 2 for seven to fifteen, and group 3 for over than sixteen. And the patients were re-divided into two groups according to their post-onset interval. The difference of distribution of five pattern identification for each group were investigated. And five pattern identification were re-analyzed according to the deficiency-excess pattern identification. K-W test was used for statistical synthesis, and the result was regarded as significant one, if its p-value was below 0.05. Results : Dampness-phelegm pattern was the most frequent out of five patterns in total participants as well as all the subgroups. In group 3 with more serious neurological deficit, larger proportion of patients in early acute stage was diagnosed as excess pattern including Fire-Heat pattern. On the other side the proportion of Deficiency of Qi and Yin was larger in late convalescent stage of group 3 than in other groups. But nothing was statistically significant. Conclusions : Further study including patients with more variant classification with follow-up evaluation is needed to reflect the real characteristics of stroke population.

Arteriosclerosis is a pathologic term that contains hardening of arterial wall, loss of arterial elasticity and stenosis of artery. To diagnose this disease, conventional angiography, MRA, transcranial doppler ultrasonography are commonly used. And it causes various clinical phases by a region of the disease. In oriental medicine, arteriosclerosis is classified into congested fluids(痰飮), blood stasis(瘀血), stagnation of Gi(氣滯) and treated by Herb-Med, acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, and the like. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of oriental medical therapy on cerebral arteriosclerosis. A patient with cerebrovascular disease admitted due to dizziness, mild dysarthria, tinnitus, anxiety disorder and his Brain MRA showed severe arteriosclerosis in right anterior cerebral artery(ACA) and middle cerebral artery(MCA). Every day, we administered to patient Herb Med and Herb pills. Also, acupuncture, moxibustion were done, too. As a result of the treatment, the patient's follow up Brain MRA showed improved state of ACA stenosis.

Wallenberg's syndrome is a neurological condition caused by a stroke in the vertebral or posterior inferior cerebellar artery of the brain stem. Wallenberg's syndrome is also called Lateral Medullary Syndrome. In this case report, we are going to describe the clinical menifestation and progress of one case of Wallenberg's syndrome and review previously published case reports about it and compare them to our case. In conclusion, significant improvements were observed in some symptoms but there were some symptoms not improved such as paresthesia. So further researches are needed for more effective treatment.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive disorder caused by a combination of insulin resistance and 𝛽 cell dysfunction. Sogal(消渴) is a traditional Korean medical term referring to a condition pertaining 3 major symptoms - thirst, polyphasia, polyuria. Sogal has been reported to have similar characteristics with DM. This case report demonstrates a patient with T2DM complaining of typical Sogal symptoms. We diagnosed him as So-yang person Sogal and treated him with acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Myocardial bridging, a congenital coronary anomaly, is present when a segment of a major epicardial coronary artery, runs intramurally through the myocardium. So with each systole, the coronary artery is compressed. It has been associated with angina, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. This is a case of a 39-year-old woman who was diagnosed myocardial bridge. She complained of recurrent chest pain, palpitation. We diagnosed her as Gyesimtong(JiXiTong, 悸心痛), and prescribed Jeongkicheonhyang-tang(正氣天香湯). After treatment, all of the symptoms had improved and have not recurred for 18 months. This case suggests that oriental medicine therapy can be applicable to improve in symptoms of myocardial bridge.

The purpose of this study is to report the effectiveness of oriental medical treatment including Hubaksenggangbanhagamchoinsam-tang(厚朴生薑半夏甘草人蔘湯) and moxibustion (and acupuncture) on abdominal distension. Two patients complainted of abdominal distension, vomiting, dyschezia and so on. According to the pattern identification (辯證論治), the distension of both patients were diagnosed as deficiency distension(虛脹). So we decided to treat the patients by means of tonification the deficiency(補虛) including Hubaksengganggamchoinsam-tang and moxibustion. And the symptoms improved after treatment. So we report these cases.
