The Korean system of health and medical care has been organized with both Oriental and Western medical sciences. To get complete clinical treatment results is not possible with only one-sided medical care, therefore we need to formulate an interdisciplinary plan for better health care, that is to say our ultimate purpose is the cooperative medical care for the promotion of social welfare and health. Hereupon, I made a searching inquiry into the present condition of cooperative medical care and its problems and also took a consideration into the medical state of other countries like China. Japan and North Korea where the Oriental medical care is used. The results of this investigation are as follows. There are some problems in both Oriental and Western(general) medical care, such as a lack of mutual confidence, a severance of interdisciplinary study, a shortage of professional human resources and so on. There also used to be problems of the system such as, the responsibility of medical care, the double charge for medical treatment, the governmental passive participation and policy, the private-oriented study system and so on. The solutions of these problems are that the mutual understanding and coexistence between both Oriental and Western medical sciences should be preceded and the interdisciplinary study, identified terminology and cooperative medical specialists would be necessary. Furthermore, the government has to seek some policies and legislation for the cooperative medical system and needs to support the public research institutes and centers of the cooperative medical care. After all, we have to train the cooperative medical specialists for the mutual aid of both Oriental and Western medical sciences and the government also has to support it with some policies and legislation for the better medical care system.

Jing-Yue Jang(張景岳, 1563{\sim}1640$), a medical scalar in the late Ming(明) Dynasty wrote many books such as Leijing(類經), Zhilyilu(質疑錄) and Jingyuequanshu(景岳全書). He was also famouse for the concept of 'Warming and Recuperating(溫補)' and 'Syndrome Differantation Treatment(辨證論治)', Jingyuequanshu was written between 1636 and 1640, and first published in 1700, It can be said that the book was imported from Ming Dynasty of China to Chosun(朝鮮) Dynasty, in what is now South Korea. between 1713 and 1724 In eighteen century. the book was quoted in Euimunbogam(醫門寶鑑), Jejungshinpyun(濟衆新篇) and Magwaheotong(麻科會通). In nineteen century. the book was quoted in Euijongsonik(醫宗損益), Bangyakhappyun(方藥合編), Dongeuisusebowon (東醫壽世保元) and Euigamjungma(醫鑑重磨). The number of quoted prescription and thesis during in nineteen century. is much more than that of eighteen century, Specifically, there are thirty prescriptions of Xinfangbazhen(新方八陣) in Bangyakhappyun, and the concept of 'Nourishing Yang(扶陽)' in Euigamjungma is also based upon Jing-Yue's thesis, This fact shows that we cannot consider the medicine of the late Chosun Dynasty as an abridgement of Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑). It is also said that the study focusing on medical books imported from China to Korea in this period is related to understanding the medical progress in the late Chosun Dynasty and the medical intercommunication between Korea and China.

This study was performed to investigate the supply and demand of the oriental medical doctor(OMD) based on the supply and demand analysis of OMD up to the year 1997. The baseline projection and demographic methods were considered to examine the supply of OMD. On the contrary, for the demand analysis, two different approaches were conducted with the nonlinear regression model. The findings of this study indicate that the OMD will be oversupplied before the year 2012 with decreasing rate. However, when we consider the demand of OMD in the future. it is anticipated that the demand of oriental medicine will be increased rapidly with two major aspects. The first is the expansion of insurance benefits. The second is the increasing number of adult diseases because of the aging of the population structure. Therefore, the effective cooperation system and mutual exchange between western and oriental medicine is required for the future. Also. it is necessary to make the oriental medicine of the pharmaceutical services in more scientific way for the appropriate policy of the demand and supply of OMD. For the future study, the students who study abroad, especially China should be considered. These students will be the key element for the future supply of OMD.

In Oriental medicine, the subjective process of diagnosis often makes it difficult to explain the indications objectively, in spite of its excellent therapeutic value. The authors' objective Was to present more objective indications of Chongpesagan-tang(淸肺瀉肝湯), a prescription predominantly used to treat stroke in Oriental Medicine, We analyzed clinical symptoms of 105 patients who were hospitalized in the Department of Circulatory Internal Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine. Kyung Hee University, Seoul, who were given Chongpesagan-tang and improved without side effects, The symptoms analyzed included general symptoms which are usually checked in the process of Oriental Medicine Diagnosis: the so called Four Diagnosis(四診). We rearranged and selected symptoms which were predominantly found among other symptoms. We found some symptoms of which the patients frequently complained: sweating 84%, red tongue 74%, white tongue coat 65%, constipation 35%, tight pulse 21%, headache 20%, thirst 20%, chest discomport 17%, etc, We believe that these suggest an objective indication of Chongpesagantang.

The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of honey-fried Astragali Radix extract on the nephrotoxicity in rats induced by cyclosporin A(CsA). The experimental rats were divided into three groups of ten. The Normal group was given nothing. The Control group was given only saline water every day for 14 days after the subcutaneous IV injection of 50mg/kg in CsA every other day during a period of 14 days. The sample group was administered 4.8mg/200g of Astragali Radix extract daily for 14 days after the subcutaneous IV injection of 50mg/kg in CsA every other day for 14 days. These groups were observed for 14 days. This experimental research focused on measuring the levels of BUN, creatinine, total protein, sodium, potassium, chloride, AST and ALT in the serum and specific gravity and creatinine in the urine. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Changes in serum The levels of BUN, creatinine. AST and ALT in the serum were significantly decreased in the sample group as compared with those of the control group. Total Protein level in the serum was significantly increased in the sample group as compared with that of the control group. Sodium and Potassium levels in the serum in the sample group were a little lower than those of the control group but no significance was noted. The chloride level in the serum in the sample group significantly increased as compared with that of the control group on the 7th day but in the sample group was significantly decreased as compared with that of the control group on the 14th day 2. Changes in urine Urinary specific gravity in the sample group showed significant increase, compared to the control group on the 7th day but were a little higher than that of the control group on the 14th day. Creatinine level in the urine were a little higher than that of the control group but no significance was found. These results suggest that honey-fried Astragali Radix might be effective on the nephrotoxicity in rats caused by CsA.

This experiment was carried out to study the safe utilization and standardization Whangryunhaedok-tang extract solution for herbopuncture on stroke patients. The test material was manufactured by water-alcohol method. The components of Whangryunhaedok-tang extract solution for herbopuncture were analyzed by HPLC. Mice were used for acute toxicity tests. The results were as follows. 1. In the berberine contents(%) of Whangryunhaedok-tang extract, berberine was 0.25%. 2. There were no abnormal findings in acute toxicity test treated with Whangryunhaedok-tang extract solution for herbopuncture and LD50 was not reached because no experimental animals were found dead throughout the study.

We demonstrated the moxibution on CV5(Serk-Moon) and CV3(Chung-Guk), as we have known contraceptive acupuncture point and pregnancy acupuncture point in oriental medcine, effected on concentration of progesteron and estrogen. As the reports, $3{\beta}-hydroxysteroid\;dehydrogenase/{\Delta}5-{\Delta}4$ isomerase $(3{\beta}-HSD)$ is an enzyme that has catalytic oxidation and isomerase reaction on steroidhormon synthase including progesteron and estrogen. So we observated the concentration and mass of $(3{\beta}-HSD)$ by immuno-chemicalstain, western blot and Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay in rat ovary. In results, we detected that the mass of $(3{\beta}-HSD)$ decreased significantly in moxibution treated group on CV5($p{\leq}0.05$) in rat ovary and proposed that the moxibution of CV5 make possible to contraception because of blocking estrogen synthesis by $(3{\beta}-HSD)$ decrease. But we didn't know moxibution effects exactly whether is biochemical reaction or thermal reaction on acupuncture point.

We reported that acupuncture on $LI_4$ effected thermal change on $LI_4$ and ST25 area, And this study was performed on 100 healthy students to observe the effects of acupuncture at Hap-kok ($LI_4$) according to the meridian and qi-xue(氣血) phenomenon of oriental medicine's theory, The results was 1. In healthy man, mean skin temperatures of $LI_4$, ST25, CV12 areas(Control) were decreased, 2. In left $LI_4$ acupuncture group, the temperature of abdominal skin and $LI_4$ area had the tendency of increase, both right and left $LI_4$ acupuncture group, the temperature of abdominal skin and $LI_4$ area had not significant tendency. 3. In the research of thermal difference which eliminate a special region temperature, in the control group, the thermal changes had not significant tendency, in the left $LI_4$ acupuncture group and both right and left $LI_4$ acupuncture group, the thermal changes had tendency to be increased, 4. In the deviation analysis which mean of each group is excluded, in the control group, it turned out that deviation is regular for 10 minutes; in the left $LI_4$ acupuncture group and both right and left $LI_4$ acupuncture group, it turned out that deviation is more larger than the control group for 10 minutes. The above results indicates that Digital Thermography is a useful method to observe effects and changes by acupuncture stimulation on objective evaluation of phenomenon for the meridian system. Thus, acupuncture on $LI_4$ affects to thermal changes of the abdominal skin and $LI_4$ area, but exact examination of thermal changes on abdominal skin will have to be done.

To characterize the effects of Gilgyung-Tang(GGT) on cellular proliferation and viability of normal lung fibroblast cells, we examined the cell cycle progression and cell cycle-related gene expression in T3891 using a flow cytometry and a quantitative RT-PCR analysis. 1. The significant surpression effect of cellular proliferations of GGT was observed in proportion to a certain concentration and time. 2. GGT was identified to induce apoptotic death of damaged cells by treatment with a DNA-damage agent and etoposide, while it stimulated the recovery of cellular viability of normal cells. 3 The significant reductions of mRNA expression of PCAN, c-Fos treated by GGT were observed. 4. The significant inductions of mRNA expression of p53, CDKN1. Gadd45 treated by GGT were observed. 5. The apoptosis caused by the reduction of Bcl-2 genes was significant and the Bax genes were increased. but the amount of Fas genes were not changed. These results strongly suggest that GGT triggers arrest of the cell cycle at G1 phase, and thus causes an inhibition of cellular proliferation of human normal lung cells through the transcriptional up-regulation of cell cycle inhibitory genes and down-regulation of induction of cell cycle stimulating genes respectably.

This study aimed to find out Oyo-Tang's effects on allergic asthma using the Egg-White Implant(EWI) method model recommended by Siqueira et al. Oyo-Tang has widely been prescribed and used in Oriental Medicine for controlling and curing of cough, nasal obstruction, pharyngeal pain and hoarseness. Previous studies have demonstrated that Oyo-Tang has analgesic, sedative, anticonvulsive, antitussive and antihistamine effects. But it was uncertain whether Oyo-Tang could inhibit the allergic reactions, to alleviate the symptoms of allergic asthma. With such aim. the respiratory patterns and eosinophil infiltration in the tracheal mucosa of rats with experimentally induced allergic asthma (using EWI method) were mainly observed. The results are as follows: 1. Oyo-Tang decreased the number of poor respiration with respect to control group (P<0.05) 2. Oyo-Tang decreased the number of eosinophils infiltrated in tracheal mucosa with respect control group (P<0.05). The above results demonstrate that Oyo-Tang has the inhibitory effects on the process allergic asthma and suggest that it could be used in relieving patients of the symptoms caused allergic asthma.

In this study, body weight levels of glucose, insulin and triglyceride in blood and glucosidase activity of the small intestine were investigated to determine the effect of Sangbaegpitang and Supungsungiwhan on the glucose metabolism of db/db mice. The GLUT4 mRNA of muscle tissue and the Acetyl CoA Carboxylase and the activation rate of GLUT2 mRNA of liver tissue were measured by the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction method and by the vitro transcription. The results were obtained as follows: 1. In the Sangbaegpitang administration group, (1) The level of triglyceride was decreased significantly and the glucosidase activity of the small intestine was inhibited remarkably, (2) The amounts of the GLUT4 mRNA in muscle tissue and Acetyl CoA Carboxylase mRNA in liver tissue were increased significantly. (3) Though glucose level in both fasting and non-fasting, were decreased and the insulin level in blood was increased, the results showed no statistical significance. 2. In the Supungsungiwhan administration group, (1) The levels of glucose and triglyceride were decreased significantly in the blood of non-fasting animals. (2) The glucosidase activity of small intestine was inhibited markedly and the amounts of GLUT4 mRNA of muscle tissue and GLUT2 mRNA of liver tissue were increased significantly. (3) The glucose levels in the fasting group were reduced, while insulin level was increased but showed no statistical significance, Based on the above results, our conclusions are as follows: Sangbaegpitang & Supungsungiwhan are thought to be capable of inhibiting the activity glucosidase, the enzyme which influences carbohydrate metabolism in the small intestine of db/db mice(the experimental diabetic model) and delaying the absorption of carbohydrate, thus proving effective on inhibiting the increase of non-fasting glucose level effectively. Futhermore Sangbaegpitang and Supungsungiwhan are though: to be capable of preventing the composition of free fatty acids by restoring the production of GLUT4 mRNA of muscle tissues and GLUT2 mRNA of liver tissues. Those results suggests that above prescriptions can be applied to non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in order to improve insulin resistance.

Oriental herbal medicines were examined for mutagenicity in the reverse mutation test on Salmonella typimurium T A98/100 and chromosomal aberration test on cultured mammalian cells (Chinese hamster cell lines). The reverse mutation test was performed by a plate incorporation method with and without a metabolic activation system (S9 mix). The tested herbal medicines did not significantly increase revertible colonies on any of the test strains with and without a metabolic activation system (S9 mix) at concentrations of 1 mg/ml. In the chromosomal aberration test, most tested herbal medicines did not significantly increase the number of aberrant cells on any of the test strains with a metabolic activation system (S9 mix) at concentrations of 1 mg/ml, compared with the vehicle control. However. Ansu Semen significantly increased the number of aberrant cells without a metabolic activation system (S9 mix). Paeoniae Radix. Hoelen, Aurantii nobilis Pericarpium, Cnidii Rhizoma, Angeliacae gigantis Radix, Perillae Herba and Moutan Cortex Radicis slightly increased revertible colonies on any of the test strains with a metabolic activation system (S9 mix), These results indicate that most herbal medicines might be carefully used in obstetrics and gynecology, although they do not have the potent mutagenic potential under the present test conditions.

To evaluate the antitumor activity, antimetastatic and immunomodulatory effects of samryongbakchulsankamibang(SBSK) studies were done experimentally, In cytotoxicity against P388, A549. SK-OV-3, B16-F10 and SK-MEL-2. concentration inhibiting cell growth up to below 40% of control was recognized at $10^{-3}g/ml$ of SBSK. In Inhibitory effect on activity of DNA topoisomerase I. the $IC_{50}$ was shown $200-400{\mu}g/ml$ of SBSK. The T/C was 154% in SBSK-treated group in S-180 bearing ICR mice, The concentration inhibiting adhesion of A549 and B16-F10 to complex extracellular matrix up to below 30% of control was recognized at $5{\times}10^{-4}$, $1{\times}10^{-3}\;g/ml$ of SBSK. In pumonary colonization assay with B16-BL/6, a number of colonies in the lungs were decreased significantly in SBSK-treated group as compared with control group, In hematological changes in B16-BL/6 injected C57BL/6, numbers of WBC and platelet were not changed significantly in SBSK-treated groups, In CAM and in vitro neovascularization assay, angiogenesis was inhibited significantly in SBSK-treated group as compared with control group. From above results it was concluded that SBSK could be usefully applied for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of a mixture of Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma and Coptidis Rhizoma water extracts on the blood pressure, plasma renin activity, plasma levels of aldosterone and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The results of this study were as follows: 1. Systolic blood pressure decreased significantly after the administration of a mixture of Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, and Coptidis Rhizoma water extract 0.2 ml/200g. 2. Plasma renin activity and plasma levels of ANP were not changed after the administration of a mixture of Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma and Coptidis Rhizoma water extracts, 3. Plasma levels of aldosterone was increased significantly after the administration of a mixture of Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma and Coptidis Rhizoma water extracts 0.1 ml/200g.

The present study was performed to investigate the effect of Yangkyuksanhoa-tang on the morphological changes of the basilar artery after experimentally induced subarachnoid hemonrrhages(SAH). Yangkyuksanhoa-tang has been used freguently for cerebrovascular accident Sprague Dawley rats weighing between 350-400 g were used. The 6 normal rats and 24 SAH elicited rats were used, The SAH induced by injection of the fresh autologus heart blood (0.3-0.4 ml) into the cisterna magna through the posterior atlanta-occipital membrane, Sample group was given 3.3 ml/kg/day of Yangkyuksanhoa-tang extracts for 2 days after SAH. The experimental animals were killed at 48hrs after SAH. The morphological changes of the arterial walls were examined by light and electron microscopy. Following are the obtained results: 1. In SAH elicited rats, the size of the lumen in basilar artery was diminished by about 45% and the thickness of arterial wall was increased by about 82%. In SAH elicited rats with Yangkyuksanhoa-tang treatment, the size of the lumen in basilar artery was merely diminished by about 18% and the thickness of arterial wall was merely increased by about 19%. 2. In light microscopic examination, the endothelium was swollen into a cuboid shape and the layer of smooth muscle was increased in the basilar artery of SAH elicited rats. In SAH elicited rats with Yangkyuksanhoa-tang treatment, the size of the lumen in basilar artery was enlarged and the thickness was decreased than in SAH elicited rats. The endothelium was flattened into a squamous shape and the layer of smooth muscle was decreased more than in SAH elicited rats. 3. In electron microscopic examination, the endothelial cells with fragmentation nuclei were changed into a cuboid shape and the internal elastic lamina were folded at the basilar artery of SAH elicited rat. The nuclei of smooth muscle cells were changed into a round or crumpled shape. The length of smooth muscle was shorten and thickness was increased. But all kinds of morphologic changes were diminished in SAH elicited rats with Yangkyuksanhoa-tang treatment. Conclusion : Yangkyuksanhoa-tang extracts were effective to treat cerebral vasospasm after experimentally induced subarachnoid hemorrhage in rats.

This study focused on the method of interpreting Moire's topography. There has been no standard of interpretation which informed, this study, The conclusions arc as follows: Miore's image closed contour lines which is consisted of points. These points in one contour have the same distances from the screen to the patient's back. Moire's index means the number of contour gaps from symmetrical point of a specific point with the axis of central line. The number of contours which pass the median line means the degree of antero-posterior curvature.

The in vivo effects of Fructus Benincasae (FB-Baekdongkwa(B) and FB- on the expectoration (decrease in sputum viscoelasticity) by their sorts and using rats (Sp. D. male, $150{\sim}160g$). FB was divided by seed, flesh, and bark, extracted by 95% ethanol for 3 hr. The extracts were given to rats administration and the following results were obtained: 1. When FB Recens-C extract was administered at the concentration of 300 mg/kg b.w., mucus secretion effect in the trachea was desirably stimulated. 2. The secretion of phenol red was increased in the FB-treated tracheas in the order of Semen Benincasae(SB)-B $(153{\pm}8\;%)$, FB-B $(149{\pm}10\;%)$, and FBR-C $(117{\pm}26\;%)$. In general, the effect of FB-B extract on phenol red secretion was stronger than that of FB-C. 3. When tracheobronchial lavage fluid was analyzed, the mucus secretion was relatively high $(111{\pm}14\;%)$ in FB-B compared with other extracts. 4. Microscopic analysis after direct treatment of the FB extracts to the rat tracheal tissue showed that all the FB extracts possessed no effects for the activity of the ciliary movement. 5. Glycoprotein content secreted by the seed extract of FB-B was increased compared with the control group, which represents the highest secretion effect of mucus. From the above results. we could conclude that the seed of SB-B possesses better activity for mucus secretion from trachea than the extracts of any other parts. Therefore, it is expected that the seed of SB-B may be available for the purpose of expectorant activity in the prescription of traditional medicine.

Okbyungpoongsan(OBPS) has long been known to have anti-allergic effect. In order to evaluate the influence on innate and specific immune response, the effects of OBPS on vascular permeability. hypersensitivities and phagocytic functions were measured. As the results, OBPS increased phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages in vitro and in vivo. But OBPS depressed formation of reactive oxygen intermediates(ROI) in vitro and in vivo, while the drug enhanced generation macrophages. Foot pad swelling in the mouse and contact hypersensitivity against dinitroflouorobenzene were decreased. OBPS had no effect on NK cells. But OBPS decreased vascular permeability induced by histamine without statistical significance. These results demonstrate that OBPS suppresses hypersensitivity reactions without affecting phagocytic functions and formation of ROI from macrophages. It also means that OBPS acts as a effective inducer to synthesis of nitric oxide which is effective for the infectious disease while it does damage to tissue less as it suppresses ROI, So we can conclude that OBPS could be used for the treatment of the disease related with immune function.

To assess the usefulness of tongue inspection for evaluating the Pattern identification in oriental medicine, we observed stroke patient's tongue and tongue coat and compared it with Pattern identification. The test group was composed of 85 acute stroke stage patients(within 72 hours of onset). Subjects were randomly selected from stroke patients admitted in the KyungHee University, Hospital of Oriental Medicine from December 1 1998 to June 30 1999. We took pictures of patient's tongue and tongue coat within 72hours from onset and checked Pattern identification at the same time. Tongues colored pale rose or red greatly outnumbered other colors. Tongue shape tended to be prickly or fissured, and tongue condition tended to be unflexible or deviated. Regarding tongue coat color, there were great amounts of yellow or clark yellow tongue coats, which were moist, thick or greasy in substance. The red tongue was significantly related to Fire-heat and deficiency of Yin syndrome, while faint white tongue to Damp syndrome(P=0.006). In terms of tongue coat, thin coat was related to Wind and Fire-heat syndromes, thick coat to Damp and Blood stasis syndrome, respectively (P=0.002). In conclusion, we thought that tongue inspection could be a useful Oriental medicine diagnosis in stroke.

Herniation of intervertevral disc(HIVD) is the most common disease causing low back pain. Acupuncture, electroacupuncture and moxibustion has been used for treatment of HIVD. Bee venom (BV) also has been traditionally applied to relieve pain. Recently, it has been reported that BV is effective in treating HIVD. But more objective methods were required to assess the efficacy of BV on HlVD. So we assessed of BV-acupuncture effect on herniated disc patients by use of rating scale for low back pain. We researched 22 patients who were treated at Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Kyung Hee Medical Center from January 1999 to June 1999. The patients were diagnosed by MRI as having a herniated disc. The results of treatment using rating scale for low back pain in HIVD showed that $43.77{\pm}14.39$ point of pre-treatment score and $84.5{\pm}3.97$ point post-treatment score. The improvement index showed $0.43{\pm}0.15$. Especially, clinical score of neurologic deficits showed most highest improvement index of $0.7{\pm}0.45$. Assessment of BV-acupuncture Effect by MRI finding were showed that protruded disc and extruded disc got more higher improvement index than bulging disc. Among 22 patients, satisfactory assessment of BV-acupuncture effect showed that 15(68.2%) were excellent, and 7(31.8%) were good. The result suggest that BV-acupuncture is good method for treatment of HIVD.
