Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-arthritis effects of Jeonsaenghwalhyeoltanggamibang(JHTG) on collagen-induced arthritis(CIA) in mice. Methods: To assess the effects of JHTG on CIA in mice, we conducted several experiments such as analysis of arthritis index, cell count of draining lymph node(DLN) and paw joint, measurement of serum antibody levels and observation of the histological changes of joint. Results: 1. JHTG extract had a suppressive effect on the arthritis index of paw joints in CIA mice. 2. JHTG extract increased the total cell number of DLN, and decreased the total cell number of paw joints in CIA mice. 3. JHTG extract increased the absolute number of various cell surface receptors in DLN, and decreased the absolute number of B220+/CD23+ cells in DLN in CIA mice. 4. JHTG extract decreased the absolute number of CD3+, CD4+, CD11b+/Gr-1 cells in paw joint in CIA mice. 5. JHTG extract didn't decrease the absolute number of CD4+/CD25+ cells in paw joints in CIA mice. 6. JHTG extract decreased levels of total IgM in the serum of CIA mice, but had no effect on levels of collagen II specific antibody. 7. JHTG extract decreased the destruction of articular cartilages and collagen fibers and the proliferation of synovial cells in paw joints from CIA mice. Conclusion: These results indicate that JHTG has clinical potential for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis by modulating the immune response.

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of Manbunbang extract (MBB). Methods: In order to understand the mechanism of anti-inflammatory effect of MBB, expression of cytokines and its levels in RAW 264.7 cell lines, as well as changes of cytokine gene expressions in serum, spleen, and liver tissues in acute inflammation induced mouse model were investigated. Results: 1. MBB significantly suppressed the expression levels of IL-1${\beta}$, TNF-${\alpha}$ and COX-2 mRNAs at 100 and 50 ${\mu}$g/m${\ell}$ concentrations, and IL-6 and NOS-II genes at 100, 50 and 10 ${\mu}$g/m${\ell}$ concentrations in RAW 264.7 cell lines, compared to those of the control. 2. MBB significantly reduced the production level of IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$ at 100 and 50 ${\mu}$g/m${\ell}$ concentrations in RAW 264.7 cell lines compared the those of the control. 3. MBB significantly reduced the production of IL-1${\beta}$, IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$ levels in sera of acute inflammation induced mice. 4. MBB significanlty suppressed the expression level of IL-1${\beta}$, TNF-${\alpha}$ mRNA in spleen tissues as well as IL-6 mRNA in liver tissues in acute inflammation induced mice. Conclusion: From the results above, anti-inflammatory effect of MBB through its immune regulation could be experimentally explained. Wide treatment of inflammatory diseases such as pelvic inflammation using MBB are recommended.

Purpose: This study was performed to determine the inhibitory effect of Persimmon Leaves extract (PL) on melanin synthesis in B16F10 melanoma cells B16F10. Methods: The inhibitory effects of PL on melanin synthesis were determined by in vitro assay. To elucidate inhibitory effects of PL on melanin synthesis, we determined the melanin release and melanin production in B16F10. And to investigate the action mechanism, we assessed the gene expression of tyrosinase, TRP-1, TRP-2, PKA, PKC${\beta}$, ERK-1, ERK-2, AKT-1, MITF in B16F10. Results: 1. PL inhibited melanin release, melanin production in B16F10. 2. PL inhibited tyrosinase activity in vitro and in B16F10. 3. PL suppressed the expression of tyrosinase, TRP-1, TRP-2 in B16F10. 4. PL suppressed the expression of PKA, PKC${\beta}$ in B16F10. 5. PL increased the expression of ERK-1, ERK-2, AKT-1 in B16F10. 6. PL suppressed the expression of MITF in B16F10. Conclusion: From these results, it may be concluded that PL is possesed of the antimelanogenetic effects.

Purpose: These experiments were undertaken to evaluate the effect of administration of Evodiae Fructus on ovarian functions and differential gene expressions related caspase-3, MAPK and MPG in female mice. Methods: We administered the Evodiae Fructus to 6-week-old female ICR mice for 4, 8, or 12 days. With different concentration of Evodiae Fructus, the female mice were injected PMSG and hCG for ovarian hyperstimulation. The mice divided into 3 groups for each experiment. We chose the caspase-3 for cell apoptosis, MAPK and MPG genes for cell viability and DNA repair. Results: In case of 4, 8, 12 day of Evodiae Fructus, we were examined the mean number of total ovulated oocytes and the number of morphologically normal oocytes. We were also examined the embryonic developmental competence in vitro. In addition we were also examined the differential expression of cell viability related genes, caspase-3, MAPK and MPG according to concentration and duration of Evodiae Fructus administration. MPG gene expressions for cell viability and DNA repaie were increased in dose dependent manner than that of control group in 4-day administration group. Conclusion: It is suggested that the medication of Evodiae Fructus has beneficial effect on reproductive functions of female mice via promotion of cell proliferation.

Purpose: This research aimed to study the effect of FAE(Ferment Artemisiae Argyi Folium and Epimedii Herba) on the mouse macrophage cell activity. Methods: Effect of FAE, which was fermented by Sacchromyces cerevisiae STV89, on cell viability, amount of $H_2O_2$ within cells, amount of NO was measured and compaperd by using mouse macrophage cells. Results: 1. Result of MTT assay conducted to observe the effect of FAE on the survival rate of mouse macrophage cells illustrated that, when FAE was proccessed for each concentration, there was no significant decrease of the survival rate. 2. FAE increased the amount of $H_2O_2$ within macrophage cells and increased inhibition of amount of $H_2O_2$ in macrophage induced by LPS. 3. FAE inhibited amount of NO in macrophage cells, and significantly inhibited increase of amount of NO in mcacrophage induced by LPS. Conclusion: FAE produced by Artemisiae Argyi Folium and Epimedii Herba did not induce the decrease of macrophage cell survival rate, increased amount of $H_2O_2$ within cells, and reduced amount of NO. FAE significantly increase by LPS, reduced the increase of amount of NO in macrophage induced by LPS. These results signify FAE has significant effect on immuno modulating activity of macrophage.

Purpose: Gleditsiae spina (GS) has been used to treat patients with several diseases such as carbuncle, swelling and parasites. Recently GS is known to have anticancer activity in abdominal solid tumor, but the effects of GS on breast cancers is not clarified. For these reasons, we investigated effects of Gleditsiae spina (GS) on gene expression of human breast cancer cells. Methods: We investigated the effects of GS on proliferation of breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231. In addition, the genetic profile for the effect of GS on breast cancer cells was measured using microarray technique, and the functional analysis on these genes was conducted. Results: Total 1,434 genes were up-regulated and 2,483 genes down-regulated in the cells treated with GS. Genes induced or suppressed by GS were all mainly concerned with metabolic process, regulation of biological process and protein binding. The network of total protein interactions was measured using cytoscape program, and some key molecules that can be used for elucidation of therapeutical mechanism of medicine in future were identified. Conclusion: These results suggest possibility of GS as anti-cancer drug for breast cancer, and also suggest that related mechanisms are involved in regulation of intra-cellular metabolism in breast cancer cells.

Purpose: The depression accompanied with menopuase shows the relation with the dopamine secretion. These studies were undertaken to evaluate the anti- oxidative and neuroprotective effects of Bunsimgieum(BSGE) on dopaminergic neurons. Methods: To estimate the antioxidant effects, we carried out 1.1-diphenyl-2- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay, 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline -6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay, and measurement of total polyphenolic content. To evaluate neuroprotective effect of BSGE in vitro, We performed thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) creation in SH-SY5Y. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunocytochemistry, nitric oxide (NO) assay, and TNF-${\alpha}$ assay in primary rat mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons. Results: The DPPH free radical and the ABTS radical cation inhibition activities were increased at a dose dependent manner. Total polyphenolic content was 0.83%. In SH-SY5Y culture, BSGE significantly increased the decreased cell viability by 6-OHDA at the concentrations of 10${\mu}$g/m${\ell}$ in pre-treatment group, 0.1-200${\mu}$g/m${\ell}$ in post-treatment group. The production of ROS induced by 6-OHDA was significantly inhibited in BSGE treated group. In mesencephalic dopaminergic cell culture, the BSGE group reduced the dopaminergic cell loss against 6-OHDA toxicity and the production of No and TNF-${\alpha}$ at the concentration of 5${\mu}$g/m${\ell}$. Conclusion: These results shows that BSGE has antioxidant and neuroprotective effects in the dopaminergic cells through decreasing the production of ROS, NO and TNF-${\alpha}$ which can cause many neurodegenerative changes in brain cell. We suggest that BSGE could be useful for the treatment of postmenopausal depression related with the decrease of dopamine.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical effect of Red Ginseng in the treatment of postmenopausal hot flushes. Methods: We studied 49 women from 45 to 55 years old who complained hot flushes. We randomly divided women into two groups, We treated one group with red ginseng capsule, and treated another group with placebo for 2 months. patients recorded the frequency of the hot flush on an everyday basis. And we measured temperature of patient's face by DITI. Results: Red ginseng and Placebo treated group significantly decreased the frequency of the hot flush. After treatment, the temperature on the cheekbones who treated by red ginseng get lower than before treatment. But there is no statistically difference between red ginseng and placebo. Conclusion: This study shows that both red ginseng and placebo have remarkable effects on patients, but red ginseng is not better than placebo.

Purpose: We investigated the efficacy of electroacupuncture therapy in obese Korean women in order to make basic guidelines for the use of oriental medicine in treating obesity. Methods: Forty women were divided into two groups and each was treated 12 times: 1) one group was treated using electroacupuncture (EA) involving auricular acupuncture and physical treatment, without exercise (EA group, n=10), and 2) the other group was treated using electroacupuncture and exercise (EA plus exercise group, n=30). The EA was applied to subcutaneous fat tissue manually. Body weight was evaluated every visit and body composition was checked at the $1^{st}$ and $12^{th}$ visits. Statistical comparisons were made using SPSS13.0. We compared the weight loss, body mass index (BMI), and body composition before and after treatment using the pairedt-test. The correlations between weight loss and BMI and age were examined. Results: After the $12^{th}$ treatment, both groups showed significant reductions in body weight, BMI, body fat, and body fat percentage. The weight loss averaged 4.58${\pm}$3.87% in the EA group and 4.69${\pm}$3.10% in the EA plus Exercise group. The reduction in skeletal muscle was significant in the EA group, but not significant in the EA plus Exercise group. The speed of the weight loss was correlated with age using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Based on BMI, normal and obese subjects in the EA plus Exercise group had significant reductions in body weight, BMI, body fat, and body fat percentage; the obese subjects also had a significant reduction in skeletal muscle. Conclusion: Combined EA therapy may be effective for weight reduction. Age and BMI were related to weight loss using EA therapy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the perception that gynecological surgery patients have on Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) treatment. Methods: We studied the perception of TKM treatment by questionnaire from August, 2008 to Febrary, 2009 in Kyung-Hee University East-West Neo medical center. A questionnaire was given to 180 women and 150 women answered. Results: Out of 150 women, 93 women(62%) had been given TKM treatment during the last 3 years, while 57 women(32%) hadn't. 53 women(35.5%) had taken herbal medicine within the last 2 weeks, while 97 women(64.7%) hadn't. 71 women(47.3%) reported that they had been given TKM treatment related to the causative disease for the operation, while 22 women(14.7%) hadn't. And 97 women(64.7%) indicated that they were willing to use TKM as a part of their postoperative medical care, 53 women(35.3%) indicated that they weren't. Conclusion: Many patients are willing to take TKM treatment as postoperative care. We need more accumulation of data for demonstrating the efficacy and safety of TKM treatment.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of oriental treatments to postpartum depression. Methods: We treated 41 years old woman and 38 years old woman who had the postpartum depression. In the beginning of treatment, they had anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue. They were treated by oriental treatments such as herb medicine, acupuncture, moxa therapy. And then We compared postpartum depression before treatment with one after treatment by Edinburgh postnatal depression scale(EPDS). Results: After the oriental treatments, the clinical symptoms were improved and EPDS was reduced (one reduces from 18 to 10, the other reduces from 17 to 8). Conclusion: Oriental treatments are effective on postpartum depression. After this, further approach and study on postpartum depression might be needed.

Purpose: For mothers just delivered of a child, sanhupung(産後風) is a critical disease which can threaten their health. The symptoms of sanhupung were diverse and divided into pain symptoms, general symptoms, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. We tried to search for the relationship between sanhupung and somatization of postpartum depression. Methods: Analysis was carried out with materials concerning the postpartum depression and sanhupung. For the analysis, materials related with the issue of this study were searched at the Korea Education & Research Information Service, and Oriental medicine advanced searching. Results: 1. The range of period and symptoms of sanhupung has been broaden. The symptoms of sanhupung were divided into pain syndrome, general symptoms, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. 2. As the symptoms of postpartum depression might indicate not only physical symptoms but also mental disorder, more attention should be placed on wether the symptoms were involved in somatization of postpartum depression. Conclusion: The authors conclude that obstinate sanhupung that do not healed up and improve in symptoms have a relation to somatization of postpartum depression.

Purpose: In oriental medicine, doctors have mainly made diagnosis and treatment with amenorrhea or delayed menstrual period based on overall analysis of symptoms and signs patients have. We think patients with amenorrhea or delayed menstrual period to have symptoms that are classified into one differentiation of syndromes, and then studied to make the index. This study has been carried out to investigate pattern identifications and classify symptoms according to them. Methods: We examined 52 patients who visited Dong-eui university oriental medical center from June 2005 to February 2009 for undergoing treatment for amenorrhea or delayed menstrual period and made OB & GY questionnaires up Results: We investigated whether the patients had symptoms concerned with symptom types by analyzing the result of DSOM(Diagnos System of Oriental Medicine, hearafter DSOM). It came out 51 cases among 52 with pathogenesis that was related to the symptom types. The symptom types of were surveyed into Insufficiency of Kidney and Liver(肝腎不足), Insufficiency of Qi and Blood(氣血虛弱), Insufficiency of Yin & Dryness of blood(陰虛血燥), stagnation of Qi and Blood(氣滯血瘀), phlegm and damp(痰濕阻滯), coldness of Blood(血寒), Heat of Heart(心火). Conclusion: As a result of the investigation, one case did not have symptoms of differentiation of syndromes of amenorrhea or delayed menstrual period. 29 cases had 1 or 2 differentiation of syndromes. 21 patients had such complex symptoms of diverse differentiation of syndromes that it was difficult to diagnose a differentiation of syndromes in clinical survey. It is necessary to put the priority among the differentiation of syndromes in diagnosis in the future.

목 적: 이 논문은 제왕절개 분만을 위한 척수마취로 인해 수술 중 또는 그 후에 발생할 수 있는 오심 및 구토에 대한 침관련 치료의 항구토 효과를 규명하기 위한 계통적 리뷰 논문이다. 방 법: 제왕절개 분만을 위한 척수마취로 인해 발생할 수 있는 오심 및 구토를 예방하기 위한 침관련 치료에 대한 randomized clinical trials(RCT's)를 검색하기 위해 2008년 3월까지 수록된 6개의 데이터베이스(MEDLINE, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, AMED and PsycINFO)를 검색하였다. 논문의 선정 기준은 원저이며, 플라시보 대조군을 설정한 무작위 임상시험이고, 오심 또는 구토에 대한 결과가 실려 있는 것으로 하였다. 결 과: 총 5개의 논문을 선정하였으며 각 논문들의 연구방법은 일반적으로 좋은 편이었다. 5개의 논문들을 종합한 결과는 수술중 오심 발생률(OR=0.468, 95%CI:0.250 -0.876, P=0.018), 수술 후 오심 발생률(OR=0.616, 95%CI:0.042-0.942, P=0.026), 수술 후 구토 발생률(OR=0.640, 95%CI:0.432-0.948, P=0.026)이 침관련 치료군이 대조군에 비해서 통계적으로 의미있게 적었다. 결 론: 본 문헌 고찰을 통해 제왕절개 수술을 위해 시행한 척수 마취로 인해 수술중 또는 수술후 발생한 오심 및 구토에 대해 침관련 치료가 예방효과가 있음을 밝힐 수 있었다.

Purpose: This study intends to report the effects of Koong Gui Tang on Cold Hypersensitivity caused by acute and chronic Blood Deficiency. Methods: The patients having Cold Hypersensitivity were treated with oriental medicine including herbal medication therapy. Thereafter their health status was analyzed with their own empirical assessments and VAS. Results: After the series of medical treatment, Cold Hypersensitivity caused by acute and chronic Blood Deficiency has shown considerable improvement. Conclusion: This case study shows that Koong Gui Tang therapies are medically effective on Cold Hypersensitivity caused by acute and chronic Blood Deficiency.
