  • This paper proposes a pulse-width-modulation (PWM) controller design technique using intelligent digital redesign. Intelligent digital redesign is to convert a well-designed analog fuzzy-model-based controller into an equivalent pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM) digital controller maintaining the original analog control system in the sense of state-matching. In similar line of conversion concept, the redesigned PAM intelligent digital controller is converted into a PWM controller using the equivalent area principle. To convincingly visualize the proposed technique, an computer simulation example-attitude control of nonlinear artificial satellite system is included.

A robust multi-objective localized outrigger layout assessment model under variable connecting control node and space deposition

  • In this article, a simple and robust multi-objective assessment method to control design angles and node positions connected among steel outrigger truss members is proposed to approve both structural safety and economical cost. For given outrigger member layouts, the present method utilizes general-purpose prototypes of outrigger members, having resistance to withstand lateral load effects directly applied to tall buildings, which conform to variable connecting node and design space deposition. Outrigger layouts are set into several initial design conditions of height to width of an arbitrary given design space, i.e., variable design space. And then they are assessed in terms of a proposed multi-objective function optimizing both minimal total displacement and material quantity subjected to design impact factor indicating the importance of objectives. To evaluate the proposed multi-objective function, an analysis model uses a modified Maxwell-Mohr method, and an optimization model is defined by a ground structure assuming arbitrary discrete straight members. It provides a new robust assessment model from a local design point of view, as it may produce specific optimal prototypes of outrigger layouts corresponding to arbitrary height and width ratio of design space. Numerical examples verify the validity and robustness of the present assessment method for controlling prototypes of outrigger truss members considering a multi-objective optimization achieving structural safety and material cost.

Adaptive Suppression of Mechanical Resonance in High-Density Disk Drives (고밀도 디스크 드라이브의 적응형 공진 보상 알고리즘)

  • The band-width of disk drive servo system is rapidly increasing for the robustness to external disturbance as the track density is increasing. The increase of the band-width may cause mechanical resonance of an actuator. In disk drive servo system, a notch filter is usually used to suppress the mechanical resonance of the actuator. However, the resonance frequency differs from drive to drive because of manufacturing tolerance and varies with temperature even within a single drive. The variation of resonance frequency degrades the suppression performance of the notch filter. In this paper, we present an adaptive digital notch filter that identifies the resonance frequency of the disk drive servo actutaor precisely and adjusts automatically its center frequency. For this, we design an adaptive FIR digital filter for the estimation of the resonance frequency. The estimation filter identifies the resonance frequency adaptively using the output signal generated from the servo system, which is excited with an excitation signal including all the expected resonance frequency components. We prove mathematically the convergence of the resonance frequency estimation filter. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate the practical use of our work, we present some experimental results using a commercially available disk drive.

  • This study addresses the optimal shape of a LCVA maximizing its vibration control effect through numerical parametric study. Various LCVAs having the same total mass and tuning frequency are designed with constraints on the dimensions and water level, and one obtaining the highest equivalent damping ratio of the controlled system is chosen as an optimal solution. As a result, it was found that the limit on the variation of the water level in the vertical liquid column plays an important role constraining the shape of the LCVA. As the LCVA width perpendicular to the plane of liquid motion increases, the equivalent damping ratio rises with slowdown so that determination of the proper width is important in design of the LCVA shape.

Simulation of channel dimension dependent conduction and charge distribution characteristics of silicon nanowire transistors using a quantum model (양자모델을 적용한 실리콘 나노선 트랜지스터의 채널 크기에 따른 전도 및 전하분포 특성 시뮬레이션)

  • We report numerical simulations to investigate of the dependence of the on/off current ratio and channel charge distributions in silicon nanowire (SiNW) field-effect transistors (FETs) on the channel width and thicknesses. In order to investigate the transport behavior in devices with different channel geometries, we have performed detailed two-dimensional simulations of SiNWFETs and control FETs with a fixed channel length L of 10um, but varying the channel width W from 5nm to 5um, and thickness t from 10nm to 30nm. We have shown that $Q_{ON}/Q_{OFF}$ drastically decreases (from ${\sim}2.9{\times}10^4$ to ${\sim}9.8{\times}10^3$) as the channel thickness increases (from 10nm to 30nm). As a result of the simulation using a quantum model, even higher charge density in the bottom of SiNW channel was observed than that in the bottom of control channel.

Optimal Characteristics of a Long-pulse $CO_2$Laser by Controlling SCR Firing Angle in AC Power Line

  • We demonstrate a simple pulsed $CO_2$ laser with millisecond long pulse duration in a tube at a low pressure of less than 30 Torr. The novel power supply for our laser system switches the voltage of the AC power line (60Hz) directly. The power supply doesn't need elements such as a rectifier bridge, energy-storage capacitors, or a current-limiting resistor in the discharge circuit. To control the laser output power, the pulse repetition rate is adjusted up to 60Hz and the firing angle of SCR(Silicon Controlled Rectifier) gate is varied from 30。 to 150。. A ZCS (Zero Crossing Switch) circuit and a PIC one-chip microprocessor are used to control precisely the gate signal of the SCR. The maximum laser output of 35 W is obtained at a total pressure of 18 Torr, a pulse repetition rate of 60 Hz, and a SCR gate firing angle of 90。 . In addition, the resulting laser pulse width is approximately 3㎳(FWHM). This is a relatively long pulse width, compared with other repetitively pulsed $CO_2$ lasers.

Analysis of Biomechanical Differences based on Distance Changes in Connection with Approach Swings of Tour-professional Golfers

  • Objective: This study aimed to compare differences in biomechanical factors according to distance changes in relation to approaches during a round of golf to obtain basic data on golf swings. Methods: The research subjects were 8 KPGA-affiliated professional golfers who performed approach shots that put a ball into a circle of 8 feet in diameter from distances of 30, 50, and 70 m. Data were collected by using six infrared cameras and a ground reaction force device, which were applied to calculate biomechanical factors by using Kwon3D XP. The calculated data were subjected to one-way ANOVA by using SPSS 20.0, with the significance level set at p value of 0.05. Results: Elapsed time, stance width, clubhead position variation, clubhead synthesis speed, and cocking angle significantly differed according to distance change during the approach swing. Clubhead speed was positively related with stance width and clubhead displacement. Ground reaction force significantly differed according to distance change during the approach swing. Factors before and after showed differences in other states, except in the impact state. Conclusion: In the present study, we drew several conclusions regarding biomechanical factors and ground reaction forces according to distance change in the approach swing of professional golfers. According to these conclusions, we suggest that distance control with swing range is more important than power control in maintaining the accuracy and consistency of golf swing and is the most important mechanism of golf swing.

A Camber Monitoring System of RM Zone based on Direction Selective Edge Detection Algorithm (방향 선택형 에지검출 알고리즘 기반의 RM존 캠버 모니터링 시스템)

  • In this paper, we propose camber monitoring system which is using on hot rolling process. In roughing mill which is one of the rolling part in hot rolling process, steel plate can be bended in width direction under the imbalance of rolling condition. This bending of steel plate in width direction is called as camber. In order to measure the camber, first, cameras which are installed over transport pathway of steel plate take pictures of whole shape of steel plate. And location value of steel plate edge is extrated from these pictures by edge detection algorithm. But, there are a lot of noises which are generated by such as water sprays, dusts, peripheral equipments in these pictures, and these noises make edge detection difficult. In order to solve this kind of problem, we developed a direction selective edge detection algorithm, and applicated in our camber monitoring system. As a result, we got stable results in spite of process noises.

  • This paper presents a camera calibration method in order to estimate the lane detection and inter-vehicle distance estimation system for an automotive safety driving system. In order to implement the lane detection and vision-based inter-vehicle distance estimation to the embedded navigations or black box systems, it is necessary to consider the computation time and algorithm complexity. The process of camera calibration estimates the horizon, the position of the car's hood and the lane width for extraction of region of interest (ROI) from input image sequences. The precision of the calibration method is very important to the lane detection and inter-vehicle distance estimation. The proposed calibration method consists of three main steps: 1) horizon area determination; 2) estimation of the car's hood area; and 3) estimation of initial lane width. Various experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
