  • Recently, there are environmental issues for sustainable transportation system to pursue the energy-efficient and environment-friendly public urban transit. These transportation system needs to offer demand-oriented high-quality service being on the same level with cab service for urban space. PRT(Personal Rapid Transit), small track-guided vehicle, is repeatedly mentioned as a possible alternative for the new urban public transportion system, but but there are not many researches on the operational optimal routing for PRT network. In this paper, the concept of PRT and general optimal routing methods are reviewed. And we suggest the optimal routing method for city-wide PRT network with multi-vehicles and stations, junctions and directional arcs. Futher research directions for PRT routing are presented.

  • In order to diversify energy source and to utilize it effectively, it requires to construct an integrated energy management system in a wide area. This research paper explores the core technology of network construction using wide area energy and applies the technology to the field. In specific, it examines the business model by developing l) construction technology of optimum integrated system for thermal supply on wide area network related IT technology, 2) technology of unutilized energy as heat pump using exhaust gas latent heat, and 3) thermal transportation and storage technology using various sources, and by evaluating the applicability and marketability of the model in the field.

  • The research deals with the establishment of transportation areas in the metropolitan cities. The purpose is three-fold ; 1) to review the existing literature : 2) to analyze the commuting (work and school) pattern and interregional movement pattern of passengers and freights ; 3) to establish the metropolitan transportation area based on the above analyses. The transportation area is defined by the analysis of trip pattern to the center city of each metropolitan area. The detailed indices for establishment are selected by the rank-size and time-distance analyses. For the operational purpose, the study defines 3 different transportation areas as follows : the first transportation area means the directly effecting region of the center city ; the second means the region with many reverse trips and development potentials ; and the third means the indirectly effecting region. It can be concluded that the first transportation area includes 10 cities and 5 counties in Seoul metropol tan region, Yangdsan-Gun, Kimhae-Gun and Kimhae-Si in Busan, Dalsung-Gun, Chilgok-Gun and Kyungsan-Gun in Daegu, Hwasung-Gun and Raju-Gun in Kwangju, and Daeduk-Gun in Daejun. These results could be expected to have many implications for the establishment of area-wide public transportation network, the metropolitan transportation decision-making bodies and others.

  • Mungyeng line(Jupyung${\sim}$Mungyeng) was closed due to a rapid decrease in demand in 1995. However, as the rail transportation demand is expected to increase with the plan to develop a tourist resort and a traffic network in Mungyeng area, it is required to forecast future demand to meet the change of transportation environment in this region. This study predicts the rail transportation demand and analyzes financial benefit in operator's side in case of reopening this line, based on nation-wide traffic volume data from Korean Transportation Database(KTDB). The results of this research can be applied to not only establishing a train operation plan also improving customer service. Moreover, Korail will have an opportunity to develop new business by linking train service to tourist attractions around the Mungyeng area.

  • The current AIS network and. system are run on a full scale with 22 ground stations and. 11 operational systems, completing a nation-wide, integrated network However, currently it needs to manage sea traffic by linking AIS to VIS which 1vs a limited service area due to restricted radar detection zones in harbors or coastal areas. Accordingly this study analyzes the current status of the AIS system and. proposes technological and. operational improvement plan of the current AIS system through investigating the actual conditions of the AIS system and. its operations.

  • With a spread of mobile devices, the growing trend of integrating wireless communications technologies into transportation systems is advanced. In particular, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) enable vehicles to share traffic information that they have through intervehicle communications. This research focused on the design of an integrated transportation and communication simulation framework to build an environment that is more realistic than previous studies developed for studying VANETs. Developing a VANET-based information model, this research designed an integrated transportation and communication simulation framework in which these independent simulation tools not supporting High Level Architecture (HLA) were tightly coupled and finely synchronized. As a case study, a VANET-based traffic information system was demonstrated based on a real road network and real traffic data. The experiment results showed that the simulation framework was well integrated. The simulation framework designed in this study is expected to contribute to developing the environment to experiment a wide range of VANET applications.

  • This susrvey is on modelling of various network design problems with tree configuration, which have a wide variety of practical applications, particularly in communication, which have a wide a variety of practical applications, particularly in communication and transportation network planning. Models which can be classified as either minimum spanning tree of Steiner tree, are investigated. Various important variants of each basic model are then classified according to model structurs. In addition to the calssification, the typical solution method for each problem is briefly sketched, along with some remarks on further research issues.
