  • This paper presents the pillar section optimization technique considering the reliability of the vehicle body structure consisted of complicated thin-walled panels. The response surface method is utilized to obtain the response surface models that describe the approximate performance functions representing the system characteristics on the section properties of the pillar and on the mass and the natural frequencies of the vehicle B.I.W. The reliability-based design optimization on the pillar sections Is performed and compared with the conventional deterministic optimization. The FORM is applied for the reliability analysis of the vehicle body structure. The developed optimization system is applied to the pillar section design considering the fundamental natural frequencies of passenger car body structure. By applying the proposed RBDO technique, it can be possible to optimize the pillar sections considering the reliability that engineers require.

  • An efficient method is presented for determining transient responses of locally nonlinear structures using substructure eigenproperties and Lagrange multiplier technique. The method is based upon the mode synthesis formulation procedure, but does not construct the equations of motion of the combined whole structure compared with the conventional methods. For modal bases of each linear substructure, either fixed or free interface modes can be employed. The transient analysis is based upon the recurrence discrete-time state equations and offers the simplicity of the Euler integration method without requiring small time increment and iterative solution procedure. Numerical examples reveal that the method is very accurate and efficient in calculating transient responses compared with the direct numerical integration method.

  • Compressors are the main source of noise of refrigerators and air-conditioning unit. Recent studies on the sound propagation of rotary compressors showed that the accumulator is a significant source of noise generation. This paper describes a design change of a rotary compressor for noise reduction using topology optimization. Topology optimization has been developed and used to find the most effective structural configuration in the early stage of design procedures. FE model of the rotary compressor composed of all the components is built for the topology optimization. Topology optimization results show that the empirical design for the present structure fail to constrain some resonance modes and a new component is required.

  • To satisfy operation condition in information storage device, the suspension shape is very important since it correlates to dynamic characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the dynamic characteristics by using finite element analysis, shape optimization. The suspension has various modes according to different kinds of frequency bandwidth. Sway mode and second torsion mode are especially critical among them. (omitted)

  • The main obstacle to high track density in HDD id the structural resonances of the suspension. The most critical mode is sway mode and second torsion mode, when a data is read and written. It is common fact that the effect of two modes is smaller when a thickness is bulky. But the stiffness of suspension is smaller, the slider can follow a disk better. Because these two fact are reciprocal, a compromise is needed. So we investigated another method to improve band width without changing of the thickness of suspension but with changing of the shape. • The state core of a motor/generator was modeled using dynamic model updating technique based on the modal testing work. In order to take into account the orthotropic effect of laminated structure the axial, radial and circumferential properties of the solid element were separately varied to match the primary modes of the stator core which were extracted from the modal testing. Comparison of the results after model tuning showed fairly good coincidence with measured data.

  • Several reactor system components, such as heat exchange tubes, fuel fins, controlrods, and various instruments are beam-like components. This study presents a simple solution method for calculating the natural frequencies and modes of beams supported by linear and torsional springs and attached concentrated mass and rotational inertia at some intermediate points. For a general multi-span beam, theoretical method is proposed to analyze the exact solution about vibrational characteristics with respect to the nondimensional parameters. And the results obtained using the numerical models are presented and discussed.

  • The paper discussed the effect of a tip mass on the stability of pipes on elastic foundations. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the numerical scheme using finite element method is applied to obtain the discretized equations. With or without internal damping, the critical flow velocities of the pipes are investigated according to the variation of elastic foundation parameters and tip mass ratios. Also. the relationship between the eigenvalue branches and the corresponding flutter modes of the cantilevered pipes with a tip mass on the elastic foundations is fully investigated.

  • In this paper, the dynamic characteristic analysis of carriage structure supported by air bearings were performed. Toward this end, the characteristics of air bearing were numerically analyzed to estimate the stiffness of the air bearing and the clearance between air bearing and guide surface. The modal analysis of the carriage structure was performed by using finite element method, and the experimental modal analysis was also performed to validate the finite element model, where rigid body modes were compared to validate the stiffness of the air bearings. From the results, the air spring stiffness can be estimated within the range of acceptable accuracy under any pressure and clearance condition.

  • This paper investigated the noise generation mechanism of a rotary compressor using experimental method. The measurement was carried out for primary parameters which influence noise characteristics. By using STFT(short time Fourier transform), noise sources of a rotary compressor were identified and vibrating modes that increase the noise are verified. Also, it was studied that the correlation between operating speed and noise. Main factors that affect the variation of noise level were considered by the comparison of the experimental results. In addition, a dynamic characteristic of crank shaft was studied and the critical speed was analyzed.
