  • This study is one of the processes to build the artificial wetlands in the urban area. The purpose of this study was to survey biotic or physical environments, and to review modelling techniques to find out the ecological structure and function. Case study site was the Bangdong wetland in the north west side of Taejon metropolitan city. The number of species of insects decreased during monitoring. But the number of individuals of insects decreased abruptly after increasing. And then biodiversity index dropped and dominance index increased. So the structure of biotopes was affected by weather conditions. And in the restricted area such as urban area, the changes of insects were affected sensitively by not physical but environmental changes. As for birds, the number of species was reduced a little, but the number of individuals increased abruptly. And dominance index increased slowly. The changes of water depth and increase of temperature affected the habitat condition of vegetations and birds, so the dominance index of specific species increased. In urban areas it is necessary to continue management for water environmental changes, such as the depth and area of water. The number of species of fishes was reduced a little, but the number of individuals increased abruptly. And dominance index and biodiversity index decreased slowly. But the water environments was so changeable that it is difficult to explain current status as some specific trends. The number of species of reptiles and amphibians changed little, but the number of individuals increased abruptly. And dominance and biodiversity were not changed. The changes of water depth and temperature affected the habitat of every species the environmental changes affected.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) for habitat environments of Aix galericulata (A. galericulata) and Dendrocopos major (D. major), which tend to inhabit urban environments. A. galericulata and D. major are the keystone species representing the ecosystem of wetlands and forests. Based on the analysis of their urban habitat environments, this study selects artificially adjustable levels of the environmental index in order to produce the HSI model, which can be used when either restoring or creating the urban habitats for these species. To develop the HSI, we conducted field surveys at Jungnangcheon Stream, Changgyeonggung, Jangneung, Bangbae Neighborhood Park, Gildong Ecological Park, and Seodalsan Mountain. These surveys were conducted between April and August 2020, and this period includes the breeding season of both A. galericulata and D. major. Based on our findings from the surveys, we conclude that there are six SI factors for A. galericulata. These include (1) the presence of alluvial islands, (2) waterfront vegetation cover rate, (3) type of aquatic plants for food, (4) size of forest patch, (5) type of trees in nearby forests, and (6) connectivity of waterfront and forest. We also conclude that there are five SI factors for D. major, which include (1) size of forest patch, (2) rate of broadleaf trees in forest patches, (3) type of nesting trees, (4) diameter at breast height (DBH) of nesting trees, and (5) density of dead trees. The result of this research can provide future studies with useful guidance when both (1) comparing the habitat suitability of the target species in different environments and (2) restoring or creating habitats for these species.

  • This study has improved the existed physical disturbance evaluation assessment technique in a river and analysed its applicability. The improvements are the quantitative evaluation items instead of qualitative one by providing the background and their evaluation equations, corresponding detailed itemization of evaluation score, and the direct input of hydraulic characteristics and geometrical changes by numerical simulation. In order to confirm the applicability of improved disturbance evaluation technique, the comparison and analysis between the evaluation results of existed and improved techniques have been carried out by applying to the 6 cases of natural, urban, and mountainous streams. Direct input of numerical simulation results of HEC-RAS enables the evaluation simple for 8 evaluation items excluding the items of habitat environment and bottom substrate. The improved disturbance evaluation technique, which evaluates the degree of disturbance sensitively by the quantitative and detailed itemized evaluations, has been confirmed the appropriate applicability by applying to river systems.

  • Human activity such as agriculture, industrial development and urban sprawl has been the major threat to wetlands ecosystem, which have caused the greatest losses of coastal wetlands. The Garorim bay provides one of the most important wetland habitate and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries designated Garorim bay to marine ecosystem protected area in July 2016. The purpose of this research is to analysis the spatial pattern of Garorim bay using Landsat 5 (TM), Landsat 7 (ETM+), Landsat 8 (OLI & TIRS). The surface temperature and NDVI of Garorim bay were processed with spatial analysis method and time series analysis were applied to 25 years Landsat satellite 19 images. The results of time series distribution map compared with the several wetland habitate on remotely sensed images. Landsat images showed the change area of wetland vegetation distribution from 1988 to 2014. The southern part habitate of Garorim bay have been changed with vegetation patterns on coastal wetland which were covered with tidal flat.

  • To classify the relationship between riparian vegetation type and bird habitat, we studied the vegetation and avian species in the three streams(Anyang Stream, Gap Stream, Seom River), located in middle province. Five different vegetation types - Woodland type, Shrub type, Tall and wet grassland type, Low and dry grassland type and Cropland - were identified. The habitats of avian species were highly correlated with vegetation type. Streptopelia orientalis and Hypsipetes amaurotis were found in woodland. Both Paradoxornis webbiana and Phoenicurus auroreus were mainly found in shrub. Tall and wet grassland were preference habitats of Ixobrychus sinensis, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, while, low and dry grassland were occupied by Phasianus colchicus, Falco tinnunculus. Cropland were used as breeding and feeding sites for Egretta alba modesta, Anas poecilorhyncha, Anthus spinoletta. Distribution patterns of avian species were clearly divided by vegetation type and site characteristics in the stream.

  • Recently, Water quiality of urban river largely have gotten better by virtue of sewer pipe laying and sewage treatment plants construction. or the various contaminants which is flowed in into river have generated underwater ecosystem disturbance and red tide by lack of sewage and waste water disposal facilities. With tidal river, taehwa river of ulsan metropolitan city has large river width and gradual stream bed gradient at the dry and storage period. Moreover, the flow is paralyzed due to the bridge pier protection work, consist of the mat foundation which is about 1.2km from two bridge and the contaminant is accumulated. it is caused by of the red tide generated from the several years or it activates. In this study, When flow area is largest by changing independent footing of bridge pier of two bridges and using RMA2 model, we hydraulically analyzed a variable breadth of velocity and discharge. Consequently, flow rate increased the maximum 103%, discharge was exposed to increase the maximum 61%. Directly this cannot extinguish the red tide but suppresses the red tide occurrence or can reduce. And it is determined to prevent the depositioning of the contaminant and can control fundamentally the red tide occurrence cause.

  • Heat energy exchange is very important processes in the coastal wetland ecosystems. We observed and analyzed the net radiation flux, the sensible heat flux, the latent heat flux and the soil heat flux, which are balanced in the heat energy balance, over a reclaimed land covered with reeds at Goheung, Jeonllanamdo where is horizontally plane. The atmospheric turbulence had been measured in order to estimate the heat transfer during 5 intensive observation periods (IOPs). It was considered that the soil consists of water, fine particles, and vegetation canopy that changes color and density according to the season. We examined the characteristics of the heat flux and the vegetation effect on the air temperature control. It was noted that the heat was transported mainly by latent heat flux in the summer season and the vegetation canopy decreased the daily temperature range due to the heat storage. The air temperature was lower at the IOPs site than near urban area. This showed that the coastal wetland covered with the vegetation control the thermal environment.
