A finite element code based on P2P1 tetra element has been developed for the large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent flows around a complex geometry. Fractional 4-step algorithm is employed to obtain time accurate solution since it is less expensive than the integrated formulation, in which the velocity and pressure fields are solved at the same time. Crank-Nicolson method is used for second order temporal discretization and Galerkin method is adopted for spatial discretization. For very high Reynolds number flows, which would require a formidable number of nodes to resolve the flow field, SUPG (Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin) method is applied to the quadratic interpolation function for velocity variables, Noting that the calculation of intrinsic time scale is very complicated when using SUPG for quadratic tetra element of velocity variables, the present study uses a unique intrinsic time scale proposed by Codina et al. since it makes the present three-dimensional unstructured code much simpler in terms of implementing SUPG. In order to see the effect of numerical diffusion caused by using an upwind scheme (SUPG), those obtained from P2P1 Galerkin method and P2P1 Petrov-Galerkin approach are compared for the flow around a sphere at some Reynolds number. Smagorinsky model is adopted as subgrid scale models in the context of P2P1 finite element method. As a benchmark problem for code validation, turbulent flows around a sphere and a MIRA model have been studied at various Reynolds numbers.
The numerical simulation of shock waves in supersonic flows is challenging because of several instabilities which can affect the solution. Among them, the carbuncle phenomenon can introduce nonphysical perturbations in captured shock waves. In the present work, a hybrid numerical flux is proposed for the evaluation of the convective fluxes that avoids carbuncle and keeps high-accuracy on shocks and boundary layers. In particular, the proposed flux is a combination between an upwind approximate Riemann problem solver and the Local Lax-Friedrichs scheme. A simple strategy to mix the two fluxes is proposed and tested in the framework of a discontinuous Galerkin discretisation. The approach is investigated on the subsonic flow in a channel, on the supersonic flow around a cylinder, on the supersonic flow on a flat plate and on the flow in a overexpanded rocket nozzle.
In this study, three-dimensional viscous flow analysis and optimization are presented for the design of a mixed-flow fan. Steady, imcompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governimg equations are discretized using finite volume method. Upwind difference scheme is used for the discretization of the convective term and SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. The computational results are compared with the results obtained by TASCflow. For the numerical optimization of the design, objective function is defined as a ratio of generation of the turbulent energy to pressure head. Sweep angles are used as design variables.
Recently with growth in the capability of super computers and Parallel computers, shape design optimization is becoming easible for real problems. Also, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) techniques have been improved for higher reliability and higher accuracy. In the shape design optimization, analysis solvers and optimization schemes are essential. In this work, the Roe's 2nd-order Upwind TVD scheme and DADI time march with multigrid were used for the flow solution with the Euler equation and FDM(Finite Differenciation Method), GA(Genetic Algorithm) and Kriging were used for the design optimization. Kriging were applied to 2-D airfoil design optimization and compared with FDM and GA's results. When Kriging is applied to the nonlinear problems, satisfactory results were obtained. From the result design optimization by Kriging method appeared as good as other methods.
Flow through a turbine flow meter is simulated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The solution method is based on the pseudo-compressibility approach and uses an implicit-upwind differencing scheme together with the Gauss-Seidel line relaxation method. The equations are solved steadily in rotating reference frames, and the centrifugal force and the Coriolis force are added to the equation of motion. The standard $k-{\epsilon}$model is employed to evaluate turbulent viscosity. Computational results yield quantitative as well as qualitative information on the design of turbine flow meters by showing the distributions of pressure and velocity around the turbine blades.
Hypersonic analysis on the KSR-Ⅲ payload configuration has been performed using an axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. A numerical code based on the Harten and Yee's upwind TVD scheme with simplified curve fits in the chemically reacting equilibrium air was developed. The carbuncle phenomenon on detached shock in front of the payload is controlled by using pressure gradients to tune the dissipation. Chemically reacting equilibrium computations for the reentry flight conditions of Mach No. 10.2, 8, 4.9 are presented and compared with the results of calorically perfect gas.
Two-dimensional steady flowfields generated by slot injection into supersonic flow are numerically simulated by the integration of Navier-stokes equation with two-equation κ-turbulence model. High-order upwind scheme is used on unstructured adaptive meshes. The numerical results are compared with experimental data in terms of surface static pressure distributions, the length of the upstream separation region, and the height of the Mach surface for steady flowfields with a Mach number of 3.71 and a unit Reynolds number of 5.83×10/sup 6//m.
In this paper, tile characteristics of flow resulting from the configurations of piston head and intake-port of the cylinder in a gasoline-direct-injection engine are investigated numerically. Calculations are carried out from intake process to the end of compression. GTT code which includes the third order upwind Chakravarthy-Osher TVD scheme and κ-ε turbulence model with the law of wall as a boundary condition. As a result, a piston head with a smaller radius of curvature and larger radius gives stronger reverse tumble. It is also shown that as the maximum tumble ratio increases by the configuration of the intake-port the tumble ratio at the end of compression stroke increases. It is concluded that flows at the end of compression stroke can be controlled by the optimum design of intake-port and piston head.
A numerical analysis has been conducted in order to simulate the characteristics of complex flow through linear cascades of high performance turbine blade with/without tip clearance by using a pressure-correction based, generalized 3D incompressible Wavier-Stokes CFD code. The development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, leakage vortex, tip vortex within tip clearance, etc. are clearly identified through the present simulation which uses the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model with wall function method and a second-order linear upwind scheme for convective terms. The present simulation results are consistent with the generally known tendency that occurs in the blade passage and tip clearance. A 3D model for secondary and leakage flows through turbine cascades with/without tip clearance is also suggested from the present simulation results, including the effects of tip clearance height.
