In general, the drawing process is performed in a multi-pass to meet the required shape and cross section. In the drawn material, the surface strain is relatively higher than the center due to the direct contact with the die. Therefore, a non-uniform strain distribution appears in the surface of the material where the strain is concentrated and the center having a relatively low strain, thus it is difficult to predict the strain in the drawn material. In this study, the non-uniform strain distribution was evaluated using a finite element analysis and the non-uniform strain distribution model based on the upper bound method. In addition, the relationship between the hardness and the strain was established through a simple compression test to evaluate the distribution of the strain in the experimentally multi-pass drawn bar.

A FEA(finite element analysis) model was proposed to study stress and strain distributions in thick composites with various types of fiber waviness under tensile and compressive loadings. Three types of model were considered in this study: uniform fiber waviness, graded fiber waviness and localized fiber waviness models. In the analysis, both material and geometrical nonlinearities due to fiber waviness were incorporated into the model utilizing energy density and incremental method. The strain distributions of uniform fiber waviness model were strongly influenced whereas the stress distributions were little influenced by fiber waviness. The stress and strain distributions of graded and localized fiber waviness models showed more complex distributions than those of uniform fiber waviness model due to the variation of fiber waviness along the thickness and length directions. It was concluded that the stress and strain distributions of composites with fiber waviness were significantly affected by types of fiber waviness.
Using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method, the influences of uniform and tetragonal strains on the magnetic state have been explored for chemically ordered bulk $L1_2$$FePt_3$. The ordered state displays antiferromagnetic $Q_1$ (AFM-$Q_1$) state but it transitions into antiferromagnetic $Q_2$ (AFM-$Q_2$) state at about 10% uniform strain. The ferromagnetic (FM) state is observed at 11% uniform strain. For tetragonal strain, it is also seen that the transition from AFM-$Q_1$ to AFM-$Q_2$ depends on the strength and direction of the applied strain. The FM state does not appear in this case. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) calculations for tetragonal distortion reveal that the spin reorientation transition occurs. In addition, we find that the direction of magnetization and the magnitude of magnetic anisotropy energy strongly depend on the c/a ratio.

The purpose of this experiment was to see the effect of local basis weight on the local strain during changing moisture content in handsheets. The averaged strain value of the whole size of paper sheet did not give more valuable information to explain non uniform deformation in the paper sheet. The combination of intact strain measurement system KISA (Linear Image Strain Analysis) and local basis weight measurement method using a scanner made it possible to compare local basis weight with local strain to explain moisture induced paper deformation . Usually higher basis weight local area showed higher moisture induced local strain. However, the hygro-induced strain values were highly affected by the behavior of neighbor local areas. Well distributed local basis weight paper would give more uniform local strains than those of non-uniformed local basis weight paper.

The growth-strain method was applied to cutout optimization in laminated composite plates. Since the growth-strain method optimizes a shape by generating the bulk strain to make the distributed parameter uniform, the distributed parameter was chosen as Tsai-Hill value. In this study, of particular interest is to see whether the growth-strain method developed for shape optimization in isotropic media would work for laminated composite Plates. In volume control of the growth-strain method, it makes Tsai-Hill value at each element uniform in laminated composite plates under the predetermined volume. The shapes optimized by Tsai-Hill fracture index were compared with those of the initial shapes for the various load conditions and predetermined volumes of laminated composite plates. As a result, it was verified that volume control of the growth-strain method worked very well for cutout optimization in laminated composite plates.
Long cylinder, subjected to internal pressure, is important in the analysis and design of nuclear fuel rod structures. In many cases, long cylinder problems have been considered as a plane strain condition. However, strictly speaking, long cylinder problems are not plane strain problems, but rather a general plane strain (GPS) condition, which is a combination of a plane strain state and a uniform strain state. The magnitude of the uniform axial strain is required, in order to make the summation of the axial force zero. Although there has been the GPS element, this paper proposes a general technique to solve long cylinder problems, using several pseudo-general plane strain (PGPS) elements. The conventional GPS elements and PGPS elements employed are as follows: axisymmetric GPS element (GA3), axisymmetric PGPS element (PGA8/6), 2-D GPS element (GIO), 3-D PGPS element (PG20/16), and reduced PGPS elements (RPGA6, RPG20/16). In particular, PGPS elements (PGA8/6, PG20/16) can be applied in periodic structure problems. These finite elements are tested, using several kinds of examples, thereby confirming the validity of the proposed finite element models.

This paper is concerned with the elastic buckling of thin-walled arches that are subjected to uniform bending. Nonlinear strain-displacement relations with the initial curvature are substituted into the second variation of the total potential energy to obtain the energy equation including initial curvature effects. The approximation for initial curvature effects that the bending normal strain distribution is linear across the cross section is applied consistently in the derivation process. The closed form solution is obtained for flexural-torsional buckling of arches under uniform bending and, it is compared with the previous theoretical results.

Fee vibrational characteristics of porous steel double-coupled nanoplate system in thermo-elastic medium is studied via a refined plate model. Different pore dispersions called uniform, symmetric and asymmetric have been defined. Nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) containing two scale parameters has been adopted to stablish size-dependent modeling of the system. Hamilton's principle has been adopted to stablish the governing equations. Obtained results from Galerkin's method are verified with those provided in the literature. The effects of nonlocal parameter, strain gradient, foundation parameters, porosity distributions and porosity coefficient on vibration frequencies of metal foam nanoscale plates have been examined.
Poor strength test results are sometimes not an indication of low concrete quality, but rather inferior testing quality. In a compression test, the strain distribution over the ends of the specimen is a critical factor for the test results. Non-uniform straining of a concrete specimen leads to locally different compressive stresses on the cross-section, and eventual premature breaking of the specimen. Its effect on a specimen can be quantified by comparing the compressive strength results of two specimens, one subjected to uniform strain and another to a specified strain gradient. This can be done with the help of a function that relates two parameters, the strain ratio and the test efficiency. Such a function depends on the concrete strength and cross-sectional shape of the specimen. In this study, theoretical relationships between the strain ratio and test efficiency are developed using a concrete stress-strain model. The results show that for the same strain ratio, the test efficiency is larger for normal strength concrete than for high strength concrete. Further, the effect of the strain gradient on the test result depends on the cross-sectional shape of the specimen. Implementation of the results is demonstrated with the aid of two examples.
In conventional diagnostic ultrasound strain imaging, when displaying strain image on a monitor, human visual characteristics are utilized such that hard regions are displayed as dark and soft regions are displayed as bright. Thus, hard regions representing tumor or cancer are displayed as dark, decreasing the contrast inside the lesion. Because the lesion area is stiff and thus displayed as dark, a method of inverting the image brightness and thereby increasing the contrast in the lesion for better diagnostic purposes is proposed wherein a postcompression signal is extended in the time domain by a factor corresponding to the reciprocal of the amount of the applied compression using a technique termed globally uniform stretching. Experiments were carried out to verify the proposed method on an ultrasound elasticity phantom with radio-frequency data acquired from a diagnostic ultrasound clinical scanner. It is found that the new method improves the contrast-to-noise ratio by a factor of up to about 1.8 compared to a conventional strain imaging method that employs a reversed gray color map without globally uniform stretching.
