  • Modeling nonlinear friction effects is a challenging problem. In this paper, a tracking controller is proposed for a system with uncertain nonlinear friction dynamics. Instead of using a specific friction model, we assume that the friction dynamics are represented by a function, which is unknown except its being continuously differentiable and Lipschitz continuous with known Lipschitz constants. It is shown that the scheme results in friction identification and trajectory position and velocity tracking. The analysis is done using Lyapunov-based stability method.

  • This paper presents a current feedback learning controller for dynamic control of DC motors. The proposed controller uses the full third-order dynamics model of DC motor system to drive stable learning rules for virtual current learning input, voltage learning input, and the coefficient of electromotive force. It is shown that the proposed learning controller drives the state of uncertain DC motor system with unknown system parameters and external load torque to the desired one globally asymptotically. Computer simulation and experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive learning controller.

  • The present contribution addresses uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation in structural mechanics using stochastic analysis. Presently available procedures to describe uncertainties in load and resistance within a suitable mathematical framework are shortly addressed. Monte Carlo methods are proposed for studying the variability in the structural properties and for their propagation to the response. The general applicability and versatility of Monte Carlo Simulation is demonstrated in the context with computational models that have been developed for deterministic structural analysis. After discussing Direct Monte Carlo Simulation for the assessment of the response variability, some recently developed advanced Monte Carlo methods applied for reliability assessment are described, such as Importance Sampling for linear uncertain structures subjected to Gaussian loading, Line Sampling in linear dynamics and Subset simulation. The numerical example demonstrates the applicability of Line Sampling to general linear uncertain FE systems under Gaussian distributed excitation.

  • This paper presents a control scheme for the leader-following formation of multiple robots. The control scheme combines the sliding mode control (SMC) method with the nonlinear disturbance observer (NDOB) technique. The formation dynamics suffer from uncertainties because the individual robots are uncertain. Concerning such formation uncertainties, the leader-following formation dynamics are modeled. Assuming that the formation uncertainties have an unknown boundary, an NDOB-based observer was designed to estimate the formation uncertainties. A sliding surface containing the observer outputs has been defined. Regarding the sliding surface, an SMC-based controller was investigated to form uncertain robots. A sufficient condition in the sense of the Lyapunov theory was proven such that the formation system is asymptotically stable. Herein, some comparison results between the sole SMC method and the second-order SMC method are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the control scheme for multiple robots in the presence of uncertainties.

  • A robust deterministic control for a class of singularly perturbed uncertain systems, where uncertainties are characterized deterministically rather than stochastically, is developed based mainly on information available on an uncertain reduced-order system. The deterministic control scheme is applied to the motion control of a n degree of freedom robotic manipulator. The parasitic actuator and sensor dynamics of the manipulator are explicitly considered in the stability analysis of the deterministic controller using a singular perturbation model. Simulation and experimental studies for a two degree of freedom, direct drive SCARA manipulator are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the derived control scheme.

  • This paper proposes a new linear robust state feedback controller for the linear discrete time systems which have uncertainties in the state and input matrices. The uncertainties need not satisfy the matching conditions, but only their bounds are needed to be known. The proposed controller is derived from the linear quadratic game problem, which solution is obtained via the modified algebraic Riccati equation. The controller guarantees the robust performance bound. The bound of the solution and the condition of the uncertainties, which can stabilize the uncertain system are explored.

  • In this paper we consider the variable structure control for a class of discrete-time uncertain multivariable systems where the nominal system is linear. Discrete-time switching dynamics are introduced so that a new type of state trajectories called sliding mode may exist on the sliding surface by state feedback. The quantitative analysis for the matched uncertainties will show that every response of the system with the proposed switching dynamics is bounded within small neighborhoods of the state-space origin. Also, by the similarity transformation it will be shown that the eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems are composed of those of the subsystems which govern the range-space dynamics and null-space dynamics. It will be also shown that ideal sliding mode can be obtained in the absence of uncertainties due to one-step attraction to the sliding surface regardless of initial position of states. • This paper is concerned with the design of a suboptimal robust Kalman filter using LMI approach for system models in the state space, which are subjected to parameter uncertainties in both the state and measurement atrices. Under the assumption that augmented system composed of the uncertain system and the state estimation error dynamics should be stable, a Lyapunov inequality is obtained. And from this inequaltiy, the filter design problem can be transformed to the gneric LMI problems i.e., linear objective minimization problem and generalized eigenvalue minimization problem. When applied to uncertain linear system modles, the proposed filter can provide the minimum upper bound of the estimation error variance for all admissible parameter uncertainties.

  • This paper presents the development of a full order sliding mode controller for tracking problem of a class of uncertain dynamical system, in particular, the direct drive robot manipulators. By treating the arm as an uncertain system represented by its nominal and bounded parametric uncertainties, a new robust fullorder sliding mode tracking controller is derived such that the actual trajectory tracks the desired trajectory as closely as possible despite the non-linearities and input couplings present in the system. A proportional-integral sliding surface is chosen to ensure the stability of overall dynamics during the entire period i.e. the reaching phase and the sliding phase. Application to a three DOF direct drive robot manipulator is considered.

  • This paper deals with the problem of designing a linear sliding surface design for a class of uncertain systems with mismatched unstructured uncertainties. The uncertain system under consideration may have mismatched parameter uncertainties in the state matrix as well as in the input matrix. In terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), we give a sufficient condition for the existence of linear sliding surfaces guaranteeing the asymptotic stability of the sliding mode dynamics. We show that our LMI condition can be less conservative than the existing conditions and our result supplement the existing results. Finally, we give a numerical example showing that our method can be better than the previous results.
