  • ZnO quantum dots embedded in a silica matrix without agglomeration were synthesized from $TEOS:Zn(NO_3)_2$ solutions in one-step process by aerosol-gel method. It was successfully demonstrated that the size of ZnO Q-dots could be controlled from 2 to 7 mm verified by a high resolution transmission electron microscope observation. The line scanning energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) revealed that the Q-dots existed preferentially inside SiO2 sphere when Zn/Si < 0.5. However, the Q-dots distributed homogeneously all over the sphere when Zn/Si > 1.0. Blue-shifted UV/Vis absorption peak observation confirmed the quantum size effect on the optical properties. The photoluminescence(PL) emission peaks of the powders at room temperature were consistent with previous reports in the following aspects: 1) PL characteristics are dominated by two peaks of deep-level defect-related emissions at 2.4 - 2.8 eV, 2) the first defect-related peak at 2.4 eV was blue shifted due to the quantum size effect with decreasing the concentration of $Zn(NO_3)_2$(decreasing the size of ZnO q dots). More interestingly, the existence of surface-exposed ZnO q dots affects greatly the second defect PL peak at 2.8 eV.

  • 3D point cloud is widely used in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Medical, Computer Graphics, and many other fields. Due to the improvement of 3D laser scanner, a massive 3D point cloud whose gigantic file size is bigger than computer's memory requires efficient preprocessing and visualization. We suggest a data structure to solve the problem; a 3D point cloud is gradually subdivided by arbitrary-sized cube grids structure and corresponding point cloud subsets generated by the center of each grid cell are achieved while preprocessing. A massive 3D point cloud file is tested through two algorithms: QSplat and ours. Our algorithm, grid-based, showed slower speed in preprocessing but performed faster rendering speed comparing to QSplat. Also our algorithm is further designed to editing or segmentation using the original coordinates of 3D point cloud.

  • Previously, we described a social media cloud computing service environment (SMCCSE). This SMCCSE supports the development of social networking services (SNSs) that include audio, image, and video formats. A social media cloud computing PaaS platform, a core component in a SMCCSE, processes large amounts of social media in a parallel and distributed manner for supporting a reliable SNS. Here, we propose a Hadoop-based multimedia system for image and video transcoding processing, necessary functions of our PaaS platform. Our system consists of two modules, including an image transcoding module and a video transcoding module. We also design and implement the system by using a MapReduce framework running on a Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and the media processing libraries Xuggler and JAI. In this way, our system exponentially reduces the encoding time for transcoding large amounts of image and video files into specific formats depending on user-requested options (such as resolution, bit rate, and frame rate). In order to evaluate system performance, we measure the total image and video transcoding time for image and video data sets, respectively, under various experimental conditions. In addition, we compare the video transcoding performance of our cloud-based approach with that of the traditional frame-level parallel processing-based approach. Based on experiments performed on a 28-node cluster, the proposed Hadoop-based multimedia transcoding system delivers excellent speed and quality.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve mapping power and resolution for the QTL influencing carcass quality in Hanwoo, which was previously detected on the bovine chromosome (BTA) 6. A sample of 427 steers were chosen, which were the progeny from 45 Korean proven sires in the Hanwoo Improvement Center, Seosan, Korea. The samples were genotyped with the set of 2,535 SNPs on BTA6 that were imbedded in the Illumina bovine 50 k chip. A linkage disequilibrium variance component mapping (LDVCM) method, which exploited both linkage between sires and their steers and population-wide linkage disequilibrium, was applied to detect QTL for four carcass quality traits. Fifteen QTL were detected at 0.1% comparison-wise level, for which five, three, five, and two QTL were associated with carcass weight (CWT), backfat thickness (BFT), longissimus dorsi muscle area (LMA), and marbling score (Marb), respectively. The number of QTL was greater compared with our previous results, in which twelve QTL for carcass quality were detected on the BTA6 in the same population by applying other linkage disequilibrium mapping approaches. One QTL for LMA was detected on the distal region (110,285,672 to 110,633,096 bp) with the most significant evidence for linkage (p< $10^{-5}$). Another QTL that was detected on the proximal region (33,596,515 to 33,897,434 bp) was pleiotrophic, i.e. influencing CWT, BFT, and LMA. Our results suggest that the LDVCM is a good alternative method for QTL fine-mapping in detection and characterization of QTL.

  • A piston core (MR06-04 PC23A) collected from the northern continental slope in the central Bering Sea has recorded the high-resolution millennial-scale variation of calcium carbonate ($CaCO3$) content during the last 65 kyr. An estimation of the age of the core sediments was carried out by using the lithologic correlation of the deglacial laminated layers with a neighboring core (HLY02023JPC), complementing the last appearance datum of both Lychnocanoma nipponica sakaii (54 kyr) and Amphimelissa setosa (85 kyr). The probable age of core MR06-04 PC23A was approximately younger than 65 kyr. Two distinct events of a significant increase of $CaCO3$ in the deglacial laminated sediments clearly correspond to MWP1A and MWP1B in the Bering Sea (Gorbarenko et al. 2005) and to T1ANP and T1BNP in the North Pacific (Gorbarenko 1996). These pronounced peaks of $CaCO3$ contents result from the elevated carbonate production in the surface water and the subsequent weakened dilution due to terrestrial input, along with an enhanced oxygen minimum zone. The $CaCO3$ contents are low (${\sim}2%$) during the last glacial period mainly because of a low carbonate production caused by an expanded sea-ice cover and an increased dilution by terrigenous particles due to their closer distance to the continent during the sea-level low stand. The occurrence of seven distinct $CaCO3$ peaks in core MR06-04 PC23A is remarkable during MIS 3 and MIS 4, and they most likely correlate to the short-term millennial Dansgaard-Oeschger events.

  • In computer graphics, according as the rapid development of hardware can realize high-resolution image on the monitor, the more natural and accurate rendering skill is needed gradually, and the studies about high-level rendering algorithm are processing. There are two types in rendering skill. The one is photo-realistic rendering to realize accurate image like photos and the other is real-time rendering to realize rapid real-time render. This paper includes caustics expression about lights and materials of several photo-realistic rendering skills. First this paper analyzes how caustics is used and expressed in movies, and further realizes caustics effect using real renderer. This paper examines objective criterion and capability of plug-in through the objective experiment of renderer. Also this paper analyzes using environment on variables for caustics effect realization. The experimental results can be applied to many rendering works as useful data, and can be used as data to understand characteristic and capability.

  • This Paper presents the development of multiresolution model for the analysis and visualization of two-dimensional flows over curvilinear grids. Multiresolution analysis provides a useful and efficient tool to represent shape and to analyze features at multiple level of detail. Applying multiresolution analysis to vector field visualization is very useful and powerful as the vector field's data sets are usually huge and complex. Using approximation at lower resolution, brief outline of topology can be extracted in short periods of time. Local reconstruction allows the user to zoom in or out, only by reconstructing the portion of interest. This new model is based upon nested spaces of piecewise defined function over nested curvilinear grid domains. The nested domains are selected so as to maintain the original geometry of the inner boundary. This paper presents the refinement and decomposition equations for Haar wavelet over these domains and shows some examples.

  • As of 2014, KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) operates two high-resolution satellites such as Kompsat-2 and Kompsat-3. Kompsat-3 has capability of in-track stereo images acquisition but it is quite limited because the stereo mode lowers the spatial coverage in a trajectory. In this paper we analyze the epipolar geometry from the heterogeneous Kompsat-2 and Kompsat-3 image combination to epipolar resample them for 3D spatial data acquisition. The analysis was carried out using the piecewise approach with RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) and the result showed the parabolic epipolar curve pattern. We also concluded that the third order polynomial transformation is required for epipolar image resampling. The resampled image pair showed 1 pixel level of y-parallax and can be used for 3D display and digitizing.

  • This paper is proposed to algorithm for measuring traffic information automatically, for example, volume count, speed and occupancy rate, from CCTV camera images installed on highway, add to function of image detectors which can be collected the traffic information. Recently the method of traffic informations are counted in lane one by one, but this manner is occurred critical errors by occlusion frequently in case of passing larger vehicles(bus, truck etc.) and is impossible to measure in the 8 lanes of highway. In this paper, installed the detection area include with all lanes, traffic informations are collected using tracking algorithm with passing vehicles individually in this detection area, thus possible to detect all of 8 lanes. The experiment have been conducted two different real road scenes for 20 minutes. For the experiments, the images are provided with CCTV camera which was installed at Kiheung Interchange upstream of Kyongbu highway, and video recording images at Chungkye Tunnel. For image processing, images captured by frame-grabber board 30 frames per second, $640{\times}480$ pixels resolution and 256 gray-levels to reduce the total amount of data to be interpreted.

  • We present two large cosmological N-body simulations, called Horizon Run 2 (HR2) and Horizon Run 3 (HR3), made using $6000^3$ = 216 billions and $7210^3$ = 374 billion particles, spanning a volume of $(7.200\;h^{-1}Gpc)^3$ and $(10.815\;h^{-1}Gpc)^3$, respectively. These simulations improve on our previous Horizon Run 1 (HR1) up to a factor of 4.4 in volume, and range from 2600 to over 8800 times the volume of the Millennium Run. In addition, they achieve a considerably finer mass resolution, down to $1.25{\times}10^{11}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, allowing to resolve galaxy-size halos with mean particle separations of $1.2h^{-1}$Mpc and $1.5h^{-1}$Mpc, respectively. We have measured the power spectrum, correlation function, mass function and basic halo properties with percent level accuracy, and verified that they correctly reproduce the CDM theoretical expectations, in excellent agreement with linear perturbation theory. Our unprecedentedly large-volume N-body simulations can be used for a variety of studies in cosmology and astrophysics, ranging from large-scale structure topology, baryon acoustic oscillations, dark energy and the characterization of the expansion history of the Universe, till galaxy formation science - in connection with the new SDSS-III. To this end, we made a total of 35 all-sky mock surveys along the past light cone out to z = 0.7 (8 from the HR2 and 27 from the HR3), to simulate the BOSS geometry. The simulations and mock surveys are already publicly available at http://astro.kias.re.kr/Horizon-Run23/.
