An All-Optical NOR Logic Device using a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier and an External Modulation Technique (반도체 광증폭기와 외부변조 기법을 이용한 전광 NOR 논리소자)

  • All-optical NOR logic device was realized by use of two pump signals with a single wavelength and a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA). Specially, Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulator was used for an external modulation of the pump signals. To obtain the sufficient gain saturation of the SOA, pump signals are amplified by an Er-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA) at the input of the SOA. Pump and probe signals are obtained from a DFB laser diode(${\lambda}_p$=1554 nm) and a tunable laser diode(${\lambda}_s$=1535 nm), respectively. The operation characteristics of the NOR logic device are successfully measured and demonstrated at the modulation frequency of 4.83 MHz.

  • We demonstrate a ring type wavelength swept laser incorporating a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter in a laser cavity using 1300 nm semiconductor optical amplifier as a gain medium. The output characteristics of the wavelength swept laser according to the applied scanning frequencies are analyzed in the temporal and spectral domain. The output of the wavelength swept laser decreases dramatically as the scanning frequency increases. And there is a significant peak power imbalance between the forward scan and the backward scan as the scanning frequency increases. Its use in practical applications might be limited.

  • Multipass Ti:sapphire amplifier for the light source of lidar was developed in an angular-multiplexing, and the characteristics of output energy and spectrum was investigated. In the two-stage multipass amplifier, we obtained the maximum output energy of 42 mJ, the amplification gain of 21 dB and the output efficiency of 26% on the wavelength of 790 nm. In the tuning range of 715~930nm the spectral linewidth is 0.05 $cm^{-1}$ /. The conversion efficiencies of 35% for SHG at 780 m and 13% for THG at 390 nm are obtained respectively. The continuous tunabilities of 240~306 m UV region and 360~460 nm in deep-blue region could be achieved.

Design of 60 ㎓ Millimeter-Wave Frequency Doubler using Distributed Structure

  • A millimeter-wave distributed frequency doubler has been designed with distributed block and frequency tunable output reflectors. The simulated conversion loss of 9.5 ㏈ to 7.7 ㏈ from 54.6 ㎓ to 62.4 ㎓ output frequencies is achieved with fundamental and third harmonic signal rejections of more than 10 ㏈c. The fabricated chip has the size of 1.2 mm${\times}$1.0 mm. Some measured results of frequency and bias dependent characteristics are presented for the fabricated PHEMT MMIC frequency doubler. The designed doubler has two transistors, and if one of the transistors fails the doubler unit still operates with reduced gain. The failure effect of the PHEMT has been simulated, and compared to the measured data of which one PHEMT is not operating properly.

  • We present a comprehensive study of a chirped pulse Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier system operating at 1 kHz. Main constituents of the system are described in detail. The amplifier stage was first converted to a repetition rate-tunable kHz gain-switched nanosecond Ti:sapphire laser. Operation characteristics at different repetition rates such as build-up times of laser pulses, pump power-dependent output powers and pulse durations, damage thresholds, and tunability ranges were studied. Based on the results achieved, the switching time of the Pocket's cell used and the round trip numbers in the regenerative amplifier were optimized at 1 kHz. The output pulses with a pulse width of 50fs from a home-made Ken lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire oscillator were used as seed pulses. The pulses were expanded to 120ps in a grating stretcher prior to coupling into the 3-mirror amplifier cavity. After amplification and recompression, a stable 1kHz Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier system, which delivers 85-fs, $320-{\mu}J$ pulses, was fully constructed.

  • Time-encoded near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system is proposed, based on a near-infrared (NIR) swept laser source, for comparison to the conventional NIRS method using a detector-type spectrometer. The cavity of the NIR swept laser source consists of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with a gain region around 800 nm, and several fiber-optic components. To change the output wavelength in time using an applied electric radio-frequency signal, an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) is introduced in the fiber ring cavity configuration. To demonstrate the feasibility of an NIR swept laser source for NIRS imaging, the spectroscopic comparison of two kinds of absorbance-measuring systems a detector-type spectrometer using a white light source, and a source-type spectrometer using an NIR swept laser is successfully performed with an NIR-absorbing dye.

Optical true time-delays for phased-array antennas using 2×2 MEMS switches and fiber delay lin (2×2 MEMS 스위치와 광섬유 지연선로를 이용한 위상배열 안테나용 실시간 지연선로)

  • We propose optical true time-delays (TTDs) for phased-array antennas (PAAs) composed of 2${\times}$2 MEMS switches and fiber delay lines, and implement a TTD which shows a maximum scan angle of $120^{o}$ with $30^{o}$ resolution. Since this structure uses only one fixed wavelength laser diode, it provides several advantages such as easy control, high speed operation, and low cost compared with those of the optical TTDs using tunable laser sources. We design a four element linear PAA using the proposed TTDs at 10 ㎓. Simulation results show that the maximum gain is 11.6 dB at the radiation angle $0^{o}$, 11.2 dB at $\pm$$30^{o}$, and 10.6 dB at $\pm$$60^{o}$.

Wavelength tunability of XeCl laser pumped double-resonator dye laser for DIAL (DIAL용 XeCl 레이저펌핑 쌍공진기색소레이저의 파장가변특성)

  • We have developed XeCl laser pumped double-resonator Dye laser and two-stage amplifier system, and generated simultaneously of alternatively two wavelengths suitable in DIAL system. The developed double-resonator is composed of 1st and 2nd diffraction orders on light incidence angle in grazing-incidence grating method with 1200 g/mm. We have obtained spectral linewidth below 10 pm and the total efficiency dependent on pump energy over 6%. The tuning ranges dependent on 1st and 2nd diffraction orders are 434~470 nm and 436~468 nm, respectively. The amplification gain and rine-450 dye laser by using the double-resonator laser system and measured the distribution of $NO_2$ concentration over Suwon as the result of transmission of laser output of 6 mJ in this DIAL system. Consequently, we have confirmed that the developed dye laser system is very useful as the tunable source for DIAL.

  • A 4-wavelength optical transceiver system is designed and implemented by using 4 OADMs (optical add-drop multiplexers), WDMs, and optical transceivers. In this new system, the wavelengths of 1510 nm and 1530 nm are used for upload and download signals, respectively, as well as the wavelengths of 1550 nm and 1310 nm which have been utilized in a 2-wavelength optical transceiver systems. The 4-wavelength optical module shows very encouraging pass characteristics of about - 5 dB and isolation characteristics of less than -40 dB, which is configured with two OADMs, 4 couplers, and WDM couplers by fusion splicing. Noise figure (NF) of the one-stage balanced amplifier designed and fabricated for receiver module is 0.38 dB and the amplifying gain is 14.2 dB. S$_{11}$, S$_{22}$ and input, output VSWR are -28.81 dB, -32.08 dB, 1.05 : 1, 1.08 : 1, respectively.y.

Four-pass dye laser amplifier for the direct pulsed amplification of a tunable narrow-bandwidth continuous-wave laser (좁은 선폭을 갖는 파장가변 연속파 레이저의 펄스형 증폭을 위한 사중경로 색소 레이저 증폭기)

  • A new design of four-pass dye laser amplifier affording a narrow-bandwidth pulsed output is demonstrated to suppress the amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) carried by the amplifier output and reduce the possibility of parasitic oscillation in the amplifier. By the direct pulsed amplification of a cw 100 mW dye laser under a Q-switched doubled Nd:YAG laser pumping with energy of 5.6 mJ/pulse, high-peak-power pulsed output with 1.5-mJ energy in 130-MHz bandwidth is obtained corresponding to a power gain greater than $2{\times}10^6$ and an energy efficiency of 27%. The ASE ratio in the four-pass amplifier output is dramatically reduced by using a diffraction grating in the amplifier. Compared with the results obtained from the normal operation of the amplifier with no frequency-selective device, the ASE ratio is reduced by a factor in excess of 10 to remain under 1.5% of the amplifier output whereas the total output energy is slightly increased by ~4%.
