  • For last 20 years, a number of researches and developments on finite element mesh generation has been carried out and most of them are comported of node generation part and node generation part. However these algorithms are inefficient in mesh veneration process and difficult to control the shape of elements when comparing with the generation of nodes and elements concurrently. In this study, therefore, an algorithm it proposed to generate nodes and elements concurrently for various two-dimensional objects having multiple holes. Inner node generation is performed by choosing three consecutive boundary nodes and comparing them with other close boundary nodes. As soon as inner nodes are determined, element generation is conducted based on the comparison of the distances among the generated inner nodes, three consecutive boundary nodes and other close boundary nodes. the generated element nodes become new boundary nodes for further repeated process. The processes are repeated through out each region until three consecutive boundary nodes finally form a tirangular element.

  • This paper presents a mesh refinement scheme for 3-D adaptive finite element method. Firstly, the refinement of triangular meshes based on the bisection of triangles is discussed. And a new method to refine tetrahedral meshes employing the bisection method is presented. In two dimensional cases, it has been noted that all angles in the triangular meshes refined by the bisection method are greater than or equal to half the smallest angle in the original meshes. Through the examples where the newly proposed method is applied to three dimensional cases, it is shown that regarding the solid angles, the method gives nearly the same result as that in the two dimensional case. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the proposed method will be useful in the mesh refinements for 3-D adaptive finite element method.

  • We propose a triangular-multicore hollow optical fiber (TMC-HOF) design for uncoupled mode-division and space-division multiplexing. The TMC-HOF has three triangular cores, and each core has three modes: $LP_{01}$ and two split $LP_{11}$ modes. The asymmetric structure of the triangular core can split the $LP_{11}$ modes. Using the proposed structures, nine independent modes can propagate in a fiber. We use a fully vectorial finite-element method to estimate effective index, chromatic dispersion, differential group delay (DGD), and confinement loss by controlling the parameters of the TMC-HOF structure. We confirm that the proposed TMC-HOF shows flattened chromatic dispersion, low DGD, low confinement loss, low core-to-core crosstalk, and low crosstalk between adjacent modes. The proposed TMC-HOF can provide a common platform for MDM and SDM applications.

  • This paper presents a triangular-to-quadrilateral mesh conversion method that can control the directionality of the output quadrilateral mesh according to a user-specified vector field. Given a triangular mesh and a vector field, the method first scores all possible quadrilaterals that can be formed by pairs of adjacent triangles, according to their shape and directionality. It then converts the pairs into quadrilateral elements in order of the scores to form a quadrilateral mesh. Engineering analyses with finite element methods occasionally require a quadrilateral mesh well aligned along the boundary geometry or the directionality of some physical phenomena, such as in the directions of a streamline, shock boundary, or force propagation vectors. The mesh conversion method can control the mesh directionality according to any desired vector fields, and the method can be used with any existing triangular mesh generators.

  • An automatic mesh generation scheme with triangular finite elements on three-dimensional surfaces has been developed. The surface triangulation process is performed as follows. To begin, surfaces with key nodes are transformed to two-dimensional planes and the meshes with triangular elements are constructed in these planes. Finally, the constructed meshes are transformed back to the original 3D surfaces. For the mesh generation, an irregular mesh generation scheme is employed in which local mesh densities are assigned by the user along the boundaries of the analysis domain. For this purpose a looping algorithm combined with an advancing front technique using basic operators has been developed, in which the loops are recursively subdivided into subloops with the use of the best split lines and then the basic operators generate elements. Using the split lines, the original boundaries are split recursively until each loop contains a certain number of key nodes, and then using the basic operators such as type-1 and type-2, one or two triangular elements are generated at each operation. After the triangulation process has been completed for each meshing domain, the resulting meshes are finally improved by smoothing process. Sample meshes are presented to demonstrate the versatility of the algorithm.

  • Geogrid application that has proved to be an effective and economic method of reinforcing particles, is widely used in geotechnical engineering. The discrete element method (DEM) has been used to investigate the micro mechanics of the geogrid deformation and also the interlocking mechanism that cannot be easily studies in laboratory tests. Two types of realistically shaped geogrid models with square and triangle apertures were developed using parallel bonds in PFC3D. The calibration test simulations have demonstrated that the precisely shaped triangular geogrid model is also able to reproduce the deformation and strength characteristics of geogrids. Moreover, the square and triangular geogrid models were also used in DEM pull-out test simulations with idealized shape particle models for validation. The simulation results have been shown to provide good predictions of pullout force as a function of displacement especially for the initial 30 mm displacement. For the granular material of size 40 mm, both the experimental and DEM results demonstrate that the triangular geogrid of size 75 mm outperforms the square geogrid of size 65 mm. Besides, the simulations have given valuable insight into the interaction between particle and geogrid and also revealed similar deformation behavior of geogrids during pullout. Therefore, the DEM provides a tool which enable to model other possible prototype geogrid and investigate their performance before manufacture.

  • The filling pattern and an adaptive grid refinement based on the finite element method and Eulerian mesh advancement approach have been developed to analyze incompressible transient viscous flow with free surfaces. The governing equation for flow analysis is Navier-Stokes equation including inertia and gravity effects. The mixed FE formulation and predictor-corrector method are used effectively for unsteady numerical simulation. The flow front surface and the volume inflow rate are calculated using the filling pattern technique to select an adequate pattern among four filling patterns at each triangular control volume. By adaptive grid refinement, the new flow field that renders better prediction in flow surface shape is generated and the velocity field at the flow front part is calculated more exactly. In this domain the elements in the surface region are made finer than those in the remaining regions for more efficient computation. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a water dam has been analyzed to predict flow phenomenon of fluid and the predicted front positions with respect to time have been compared with the reported experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the modeling of the plane frame structure-foundation-soil system. The superstructure along with the foundation beam is idealized as beam bending elements. The soil medium near the foundation beam with stress concentrated is idealized by isoparametric finite elements, and infinite elements are used to represent the far field of the soil media. This paper presents the modeling of shear wall structure-foundation and soil system using the optimal membrane triangular, super and conventional finite elements. Particularly, an alternative formulation is presented for the optimal triangular elements aimed at reducing the programming effort and computational cost. The proposed model is applied to a plane frame-combined footing-soil system. It is shown that the total settlement obtained from the non-linear interactive analysis is about 1.3 to 1.4 times that of the non-interactive analysis. Furthermore, the proposed model was found to be efficient in simulating the shear wall-foundation-soil system, being able to yield results that are similar to those obtained by the conventional finite element method.

  • Negligible research has been conducted to date on how to analyse weakened columns, thus safety risks are still involved when structures are weakened prior to demolition. There are various methods available for demolishing steel structures. One of the most effective methods that has been developed involves pre-cutting steel columns at a certain height, so that the least effort can be used to collapse the structure by means of pulling out some of the columns. This paper presents (a) an experimental setup developed to test the capacity of axially loaded weakened columns, which is used to (b) validate a finite element (FE) model. The two pre-cuts that are presented in this paper are (1) the double window cut and (2) the triangular window cut, which are both commonly used in industry. A column weakened with a double window cut or triangular window cut reduces the axial load capacity by up to 50 and 40%, respectively. The FE models developed predict the axial failure load of weakened columns for a double window cut and triangular window cut are generally within an accuracy of less than 8 and 10%, respectively. It is shown at higher slendernesses the influence of column cuts is less than would be intuitively expected because global buckling becomes dominant.

  • A partially coupled thermo-piezoelectric-mechanical triangular finite element model of composite laminates with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators, subjected to externally applied mechanical load, temperature change load, electric field load is developed. The governing differential equations are obtained by applying the principle of free energy and variational techniques. A higher order zigzag theory displacement field is employed to accurately capture the transverse shear and normal effects in laminated composite plates of arbitrary thickness. Nonconforming shape functions by Specht are employed in the transverse displacement variables. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed triangular plate element.
