  • Little information is available on soil $CO_2$ efflux and crop yield under agroforestry systems. Soil $CO_2$ efflux, microbial biomass C, live fine root biomass, and cotton yield were measured under a pecan (Carya illinoinensis K. Koch)-cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) alley cropping system in southern USA. A belowground polyethylene root barrier was used to isolate tree roots from cotton which is to provide barrier and non-barrier treatments. The barrier and non-barrier treatment was randomly divided into three plots for conventional inorganic fertilizer application and the other three plots for organic poultry litter application. The rate of soil $CO_2$ efflux and the soil microbial biomass C were affected significantly (P < 0.05) by the fertilizer treatment while no significant effect of the barrier treatment was occurred. Cotton lint yield was significantly (P < 0.0 I) affected by the root barrier treatment while no effect was occurred by the fertilizer treatment with the yields being greatest ($521.2kg\;ha^{-1}$) in the root barrier ${\times}$ inorganic fertilizer treatment and lowest ($159.8kg\;ha^{-1}$) in the non-barrier ${\times}$ inorganic fertilizer treatment. The results suggest that the separation of tree-crop root systems with the application of inorganic fertilizer influence the soil moisture and soil N availability, which in tum will affect the magnitude of crop yield.

  • Effects of cutting time and scions section on shooting and plantlets growth characteristics were investigated to increase plantlets products by root cuttings in lacquer tree. Shoot induction from scion section was developed lately as it planted in earlier season. However, shooting rates were over 84% or more in cut planting on 15, 25 March and 5 April than sinee 15 April. Shoots were developed evenly as late cut planting. Generally, plant height, branch number, leaf number, stem diameter, and leaf area per plantlets was excellent in cut planting on 25 March and 5 April. Shooting rate from the root scion varied greatly by root sectionings. The rate of the 10 cm-long-scion was reached 84%, whereas only 54% in no trimmed root scion after 10 weeks of cutting. Regenerated plantlets from root scion without cut were slightly good in shape, but their height, number of branch per plantlets, and stem diameter were not significant.

  • The objectives of this study were to identify the root plate dimension of wind-uprooted trees and to analyze the relationship among wind direction, aboveground and belowground properties of the trees. The root plates of 77 Japanese larches (Larix kaempferi) and 24 Korean pines (Pinus koraiensis), which were uprooted by a typhoon in 2012, in the Taehwa Experimental Forest of Seoul National University, Korea, were investigated. The results showed the root plate shape could be assumed to be an oval or a circle in above view, and half an ellipse in side view, respectively. Also, the number and surface area of individual roots in root plates were greater in uprooting direction than in non-uprooting direction. The results of correlation analyses between aboveground and belowground properties indicated DBH had more significant correlation with belowground properties than tree height. Finally, simple linear relationships were derived for significantly correlated tree aboveground and belowground properties.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of IBA(indole-bufrric acid) on the rooting and root growth of air-layered part of Pinus thunbergii for miniature tree material. The experiment was performed on April 13 and lune 11, 2000 in the humidity controllable greenhouse condition. In April experiment, IBA treatment with 5000ppm at girdling part shortened about 20 days for rooting than those of control and 1000ppm treatment. IBA treatment in June did not affect on the period required for rooting, but the rooting of all the air-layered seedlings was faster than that of in April. On the other hand, IBA treatment in April did not affect on the number of root grown at girdling part and the root biomass, but the treatment in June increased the number of root and the root biomass of air-layered Pinus thunbergii.

  • Given a set S of n points in the plane, a minimum-diameter spanning tree(MDST) for the set might have a degree up to n-1. This might cause the degradation of the network performance because the node with high degree should handle much more requests than others relatively. Thus it is important to construct a spanning tree network with small degree and diameter. This paper presents an algorithm to construct a spanning tree for S satisfying the following four conditions: (1) the degree is controled as an input, (2) the tree diameter is no more than constant times the diameter of MDST, (3) the tree is monotone (even if arbitrary point is fixed as a root of the tree) in the sense that the Euclidean distance from the root to any node on the path to any leaf node is not decreasing, and (4) there are no crossings between edges of the tree. The monotone property will play a role as an aesthetic criterion in visualizing the tree in the plane.

  • Cancer-preventive effects of ethanol extract of elm tree root (EEE) were investigated. In the in vitro cytotoxicity assay, colon cancer cells were incubated with a chloroform fraction of EEE (CF-EEE). CF-EEE significantly inhibited the proliferation of cells and induced apoptotic cell death in a dose-dependent manner. For the assessment of chemopreventive efficacy in vivo, male F344 rats were fed with EEE (0.5 or 1%) in diet for 8 weeks, and were subcutaneously injected with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) to induce colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF). EEE (0.5 and 1%) significantly decreased both the numbers of AC (1191.1/colon) and ACF (529.3/colon) induced by DMH. In addition, in the Western blot analysis on the colonic mucosa, administration of EEE triggered expression of caspase-3, a key factor of an apoptotic cascade. These results suggest that extract of elm tree root may have potential chemopreventive principles that lead to apoptosis of cancer cells, and thereby suppress colorectal carcinogenesis during the initiation stage.

  • BACKGROUND: Citrus is usually propagated by grafting onto a rootstock. In Korea, As trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) has dwarf and strong cold hardness, it is widely used as the rootstock of satsuma mandarin. Because 'Shiranuhi' ((Citrus unshiu ${\times}$ C. sinensis) ${\times}$ C. reticulata), a kind of citrus, also, generally is grafted onto a trifoliate orange, most of farmer has been recognized that 'Shiranuhi' root is naturally trifoliate orange. Meanwhile, reduction of flowering in 'Shiranuhi' orchard has been issued among the farmers and researchers over past few years and they guessed it was occurred by severe prune, oversupply of fertilization, overfruiting and temperature of growth period. However, a few researchers strongly assumed that it would be caused by scion rooting of 'Shiranuhi'. So, this study was carried out to identify the existence of scion rooting in 'Shiranuhi' tree in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: To identify the existence of scion rooting in 'Shiranuhi' tree, we randomly selected six 'Shiranuhi'orchards and we surveyed three to four trees, which flowering was not enough, from six 'Shiranuhi' orchards respectively. We took the root samples of 'Shiranuhi' mandarin, and then separated the two group which were non-scion rooting (Trifoliate orange), and scion rooting ('Shiranuhi' mandarin). To identity the scion rooting, we used primer set of three types which were a F2/R15, F4/R15 and F5/R15 primer set. As a result, when we conducted the DNA analysis, fourteen tree in less bloomed twenty tree was proved as tree with the scion rooting of 'Shiranuhi' mandarin. CONCLUSION(S): Scion roots of 'Shiranuhi'mandarin were usually observed in a deeply planted tree, and xylem of 'Shiranuhi' root indicated more white color than a case of trifoliata orange. 'Shiranuhi' tree by scion rooting was more vigorous but less flowering than trees grafted onto trifoliata orange. When we used F2/R15, F4/R15 and F5/R15 primer set for discriminance of 'Shiranuhi'mandarin root and trifoliate root, we identified the existence of scion rooting in 'Shiranuhi', From our results, it is suggested that the influence of scion root should be reviewed in 'Shiranuhi'orchards.

  • The disk/blade assembly of a turbine engine is made in the shape of a dovetail type or a fir-tree type. Since disk fillet regions or contact surfaces undergo high stress comcentration, fatigue cracks frequentrly occur in the disk/blade assembly. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the stress distributions in the fir-tree type disk/balde assembly and predict the region of fatigue failure. The stress distributions of the disk/blade assembly were investigated by using the photoelastic method and the finite element method. Two dimensional photoelastic techniques were used to investigate the stress distributions of contact surfaces and fillet regions. TH stress distributions were obtained by the shear-difference method and were compared to the finite element results. It was found that maximum tensile stresses were higher in the fillet region thatn in the contact surfaces of the fir-tree models. The finite element results showed good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of artificially planted trees on top of the underground parking lots. The trees were planted 17 years ago and are now in good condition. The survey results are as follows. The planting depth of the trees was 0.9 - 1.3m. The horizontal roots of the trees were distributed in the depth of 0.2m ~ 0.6m, Growth condition was also considered to be good. Also, in the case of the straight root of the trees, the pine tree(Pinus densiflora) grew near the bottom but tree root was very thin, and the Japanese hackberry tree(Celtis sinensis) and the zelkova tree(Zelkova serrata) were seemed to bend at the bottom and to grow by changing direction. When trees were planted on artificial ground, the roots grew well horizontally, and the forces of growing vertically were much weakened. because the plants were planted in earth ball state. As a result, it was considered that the roots would hardly penetrate the bottom-pressing concrete floor.

  • The purpose of this study is to predict the remaining capacity of lithium-ion batteries and evaluate their performance using five artificial intelligence models, including linear regression analysis, decision tree, random forest, neural network, and ensemble model. We is in the study, measured Excel data from the CS2 lithium-ion battery was used, and the prediction accuracy of the model was measured using evaluation indicators such as mean square error, mean absolute error, coefficient of determination, and root mean square error. As a result of this study, the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) of the linear regression model was 0.045, the decision tree model was 0.038, the random forest model was 0.034, the neural network model was 0.032, and the ensemble model was 0.030. The ensemble model had the best prediction performance, with the neural network model taking second place. The decision tree model and random forest model also performed quite well, and the linear regression model showed poor prediction performance compared to other models. Therefore, through this study, ensemble models and neural network models are most suitable for predicting the remaining capacity of lithium-ion batteries, and decision tree and random forest models also showed good performance. Linear regression models showed relatively poor predictive performance. Therefore, it was concluded that it is appropriate to prioritize ensemble models and neural network models in order to improve the efficiency of battery management and energy systems.
