The frontal crash optimization of an engine room member using the response surface method was studied. The engine room member is composed of the front side member and the sub-frame. The thicknesses of the panels on the front side member and the sub-frame were selected as the design variables. The purpose of the optimization was to reduce the weight of the structure, under the constraint that the objective quantity of crash energy is absorbed. The response surface method was used to approximate the crash behavior in mathematical form for optimization procedure. To research the effect of the regression method, two different methodologies were used in constructing the response surface model, the least square method and the moving least square method. The optimum with the two methods was verified by the simulation result. The precision of the surrogate model affected the optimal design. The moving least square method showed better approximation than the least square method. In addition to the deterministic optimization, the reliability-based design optimization using the response surface method was executed to examine the effect of uncertainties in design variables. The requirement for reliability made the optimal structure be heavier than the result of the deterministic optimization. Compared with the deterministic optimum, the optimal design using the reliability-based design optimization showed higher crash energy absorption and little probability of failure in achieving the objective.
We present the shape determination method of 3-D reinforcement corrosion based on observed temperature on concrete surface. The non-destructive testing for reinforcement corrosion in concrete using a heat image on concrete surface have been proposed by Oshita. The position of the reinforcement of corrosion or the cavity can be found using that method. However, the size of those defects can not be precisely measured based on the heat image. We therefore proposed the numerical determination system of the shape for the reinforcement corrosion using the observed temperature on the concrete surface. The adjoint variable method is introduced to formulate the shape determination problem, and the finite element method is employed to simulate the heat transfer problem. Some numerical experiments and the examination for the number of the observation points are shown in this paper.

While melting glaciers due to global warming have facilitated the development of polar routes, Arctic vessels require reliable anti-icing methods to prevent hull icing. Currently, the existing anti-icing method, i.e., the heating coil method, has disadvantages, such as disconnection and power inefficiency. Therefore, a carbon nanotube-based surface heating element method was developed to address these limitations. In this study, the numerical analysis of the surface heating element method was performed using ANSYS. The numerical analysis included conjugate heat transfer and computational fluid dynamics to consider the conduction solids and the effects of wind speed and temperature in cold environments. The numerical analysis method of the surface heating element method was validated by comparing the experimental results of the heating coil method with the numerical analysis results (under the -30 ℃ conditions). The surface heating element method demonstrated significantly higher efficiency, ranging from 56.65-80.17%, depending on the conditions compared to the heating coil method. Moreover, even under extreme environmental conditions (-45 ℃), the surface heating element method satisfied anti-icing requirements. The surface heating element method is more efficient and economical than the heating coil method. However, proper heat flux calculation for environmental conditions is required to prevent excessive design.
The functionally graded (FG) porous plates are usually characterized by the non-symmetric elastic modulus distribution through the thickness so that the plate neutral surface does not coincide with the mid-surface. Nevertheless, the conventional analysis models were mostly based on the plate mid-surface so that the accuracy of resulting numerical results is questionable. In this context, this paper presents the neutral surface-based static and free vibration analysis of FG porous plates and investigates the differences between the mid- and neutral surface-based analysis models. The neutral surface-based numerical method is formulated using the (3,3,2) hierarchical model and approximated by the last introduced natural element method (NEM). The volume fractions of metal and ceramic are expressed by the power-law function and the cosine-type porosity distributions are considered. The proposed numerical method is demonstrated through the benchmark experiment, and the differences between two analysis models are parametrically investigated with respect to the thickness-wise material and porosity distributions. It is found from the numerical results that the difference cannot be negligible when the material and porosity distributions are remarkably biased in the thickness direction.

A reliability analysis and design procedure based on the design of experiment (DOE) is combined with the response surface method (RSM) for numerical efficiency. The procedure established is based on a 3$^n$ full factorial DOE for numerical quadrature using explicit formula of optimum levels and weights derived for general distributions. The full factorial moment method (FFMM) shows good performance in terms of accuracy and ability to treat non-normally distributed random variables. But, the FFMM becomes very inefficient because the number of function evaluation required increases exponentially as the number of random variables considered increases. To enhance the efficiency, the response surface moment method (RSMM) is proposed. In RSMM, experiments only with high probability are conducted and the rest of data are complemented by a quadratic response surface approximation without mixed terms. The response surface is updated by conducting experiments one by one until the value of failure probability is converged. It is calculated using the Pearson system and the four statistical moments obtained from the experimental data. A measure for checking the relative importance of an experimental point is proposed and named as influence index. During the update of response surface, mixed terms can be added into the formulation.

This paper proposes a multiresolution surface parameter estimation method for range images. Based on robust estimation of surface parameters, it approximates a patch to a planar surface in the locally adaptive window. Selection of resolution is made pixelwise by comparing a locally computed homogeneity measure with th eglobal threshold determined by te distribution of the approximation error. The proposed multiresolution surface parameter estimation method is applied to range image reconstruction. Computer simulation results with noisy rnag eimages contaminated by additive gaussian noise and impulse noise show that the proposed multiresolution reconstruction method well preserves step and roof edges compared with the conventional methods. Also the segmentation method based on the estimated surface parameters is shown to be robust to noise.
In this paper, three-dimensional free-surface flows are simulated by using two different numerical methods, the constrained interpolation profile (CIP)-based and finite volume (FV)-based methods. In the CIP-based method, the governing equations are solved on stationary staggered Cartesian grids by a finite difference method, and an immersed boundary technique is applied to deal with wave-body interactions. In the FV-based method, the governing equations are solved by applying collocated finite volume discretization, and body-fitted meshes are used. A free-surface boundary is considered as the interface of the multi-phase flow with air and water, and a volumeof-fluid (VOF) approach is applied to trace the free surface. Among many variations of the VOF-type method, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) and the compressive interface capturing scheme for arbitrary meshes (CICSAM) techniques are used in the CIP-based method and FV-based method, respectively. Numerical simulations have been carried out for dam-breaking and wave-body interaction problems. The computational results of the two methods are compared with experimental data and their differences are observed.

PURPOSES : This study evaluates the reliability of the patterns of changes in the road surface temperature during winter using a statistical technique. In addition, a flexible road segmentation method is developed based on the collected road surface temperature data. METHODS : To collect and analyze the data, a thermal mapping system that could be attached to a survey vehicle along with various other sensors was employed. We first selected the test route based on the date and the weather and topographical conditions, since these factors affect the patterns of changes in the road surface temperature. Each route was surveyed a total of 10 times on a round-trip basis at the same times (5 AM to 6 AM). A correlation analysis was performed to identify whether the weather conditions reported for the survey dates were consistent with the actual conditions. In addition, we developed a method for dividing the road into sections based on the consecutive changes in the road surface temperature for use in future applications. Specifically, in this method, the road surface temperature data collected using the thermal mapping system was compared continuously with the average values for the various road sections, and the road was divided into sections based on the temperature. RESULTS : The results showed that the comparison of the reported and actual weather conditions and the standard deviation in the observed road surface temperatures could produce a good indicator of the reliability of the patterns of the changes in the road surface temperature. CONCLUSIONS : This research shows how road surface temperature data can be evaluated using a statistical technique. It also confirms that roads should be segmented based on the changes in the temperature and not using a uniform segmentation method.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.
In the present study, an advanced surface construction method based on NURBS surface scheme is proposed to construct the extrusion die surface. The inlet and outlet profiles we precisely described with NURBS curves using the cubic appropriate control points and weights. The interior control Points of surface are generated using the cubic interpolation of the weights at the inlet and outlet sections. In order to verify of the proposed method, automatic surface generation is carried out for the various types of extrusion die surface.
