  • Ubiquitous errors in algebra like $(x+y)^2=x^2+y^2$ are a constant reminder that most students' manipulation of algebraic symbols has become detached from structural principles. The U.S. mathematics education community (NCTM, 2000) has responded by shying away from algebra as a structural study, preferring instead to ground meaning in empirical domains of reference. A new analysis of such errors shows that students' detachment from structural meaning stems from an inadequate structural curriculum, not from the inherent difficulty of adopting an abstract perspective on expressions and equations. A structural curriculum is outlined that preserves the possibility of students' engaging fully with algebra as both an empirical and a structural study.

  • In earthquake structural engineering towards a better understanding of both the earthquake ground motion and structural response, the design of concrete structures to resist strong ground input motions is not a simple matter, and analytical models for such structures must be developed from a design perspective that accounts for the complexities of the structural responses. The primary objective earthquake structural engineering research is to ensure the safety of structures by understanding and improving a design menthodology. Ideally, this would require the development of an analytical model related to a design methodology that ensures a dectile performance. For the accurate assessment of the adequacy of analytically developed model, experiments conducted to study the inplane inelastic cyclic behavior of structures should verify the analytical approach. The paper is to demonstrate experimentally verified analytical method that provide the adequate degree of safety and confidience in the behavior of R.C. structural components and further attempts to extend the developed modeling technique for use by practicing structural engineers.

  • Various computational tools are available for modeling highly nonlinear structural engineering problems that lack a precise analytical theory or understanding of the phenomena involved. This paper adopts a fairly simple nonparametric adaptive regression algorithm known as multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) to model the nonlinear interactions between variables. The MARS method makes no specific assumptions about the underlying functional relationship between the input variables and the response. Details of MARS methodology and its associated procedures are introduced first, followed by a number of examples including three practical structural engineering problems. These examples indicate that accuracy of the MARS prediction approach. Additionally, MARS is able to assess the relative importance of the designed variables. As MARS explicitly defines the intervals for the input variables, the model enables engineers to have an insight and understanding of where significant changes in the data may occur. An example is also presented to demonstrate how the MARS developed model can be used to carry out structural reliability analysis.

  • Taylor series has a complicated structure comprising of various concepts in college major mathematics. This subject is a strong tool which has usefulness and applications not only in calculus, analysis, and complex analysis but also in physics, engineering etc., and other study. However, students have difficulties in understanding mathematical structure of Taylor series convergence correctly. In this study, after classifying students' mathematical characteristic into three categories, we use structural image of Taylor series convergence which associated with mathematical structure and operation acted on that structure. Thus, we try to analyze the understanding of Taylor series convergence and present the results of this study.

  • In order to predict properly the effects of ground motion associated wi th earthquakes on underground radioactive waste disposal facilities, understanding of the structural behavior of an underground opening in discontinuous rook masses subjected to dynamic loadings is essential. Therefore, this paper includes literature review on computational models for discontinuous rook masses and on mathematical models for the structural analysis of underground openings. Then, structural analyses of underground openings using the distinct element computer program written for the static and dynamic analysis of discontinuous rook masses have been performed.

  • This study aims to examine the structural relationships of the consumers' understanding on the event, product satisfaction, promotional strategies, and behavioral intention in a promotional event for agricultural senary industry. The study conducted a survey among the participants in promotional events. The result showed that the understanding of promotional event had a positive effect on consumer behavioral intention, which means that the greater the understanding of The senary industry and the purpose of the event, the greater the consumer behavioral intention. The consumer satisfaction on products also had a positive effect on consumer behavioral intention, implying that the consumer behavioral intention increased when their satisfaction in terms of the taste and price of the products is higher. Further, the higher the satisfaction of the promotional strategy, the higher the consumer behavioral intention. Lastly, the promotional strategy played a mediating role between the consumer's understanding of the event and the satisfaction of the product, and the consumer behavioral intention. The result suggests that the different promotional strategies including discounts, freebies, or free-samples are able to maximize the effect of promotional events through its mediating effect.

  • Although the ports are actually competing with various strategies, the definition and structural understanding of port competitive power are not known very much. Therefore this study has launched from this fact, and has the objective of obtaining the structural model of the competitive power, and understanding the components of the port competitive power. The following are the results of the study. First, the process began by abstracting the components that composed the port competitive power through recent research, and grouping it by the most core components using the KJ method. Also, by using the FSM(Fuzzy Structural Modeling) method to understand the structure of the grouped components, and the structural model of the port competitive power was able to obtain as the result. Second, when analyzing the obtained structural model, port expenses, main trunk location, port congestion and port facility came out to be the most important component groups, and especially port expenses was the most effective component that effected all the other components overall. Third, the component groups that were relatively less important, effected by most of the other components, and located on the top level of the structure model were the hinterland accessibility, port ownership, customs duties speed, and large ship port entrance possibility etc. Fourth, the results of this study will be able to be used when establishing competing strategies for our country's ports by proposing the relatively important components with the port competitive rower considered.

  • An understanding of the natural frequencies of a beam is virtually a prerequisite to the understanding of its response in forced vibration due to shock, ground acceleration or moving loads. Contrary to the frequencies of the prismatic bars with arbitrary boundary conditions, those of a tapered bar are hard to determine when one employs convevtional neutral equilibrium or energy method. In this paper, finite element method is adopted to determine the fundamental frequencies of the non-symmetrically tapered bars. The bars assume the shapes of straight lines along the axis. The parameters considered in this study are sectional parameter, m,n and taper parameter, $\alpha$ For the structural engineer's convenience, the results by finite element method are expressed by simple algebraic equations, by which first mode frequencies are easily estimated. And they agree fairy well with those by F.E.M in most cases.

  • A vocabulary for a understanding bridge has a different scope. There are the urban setting, landscape, lightness, from minimum to maximum, continuity, material, erection, motion and dynamic. Aesthetics criteria of footbridge design are movement and grace, space and experiment, symbolism, iconic, sculpture, innovation, spectacle, lighting, gemetry and wonder. New structural concepts of pedestrian bridges are presented on examples of recently built structures. The main characteristics of described structures are appropriateness, humanity, structural efficiency and aesthetics.
