  • Stability of laminar premixed planar flames inclined in gravitational field which generate vorticity is asymptotically examined. The flame structure is resolved by a large activation energy asymptotics and a long wave approximation. The coupling between hydrodynamics and diffusion processes is included and near-unity Lewis number is assumed. The results show that as the flame is more inclined from the horizontal plane it becomes more unstable due to not only the decrease of stabilizing effect of gravity but also the increase of destabilizing effect of rotational flow. The obtained dispersion relation involves the Prandtl number and shows the destabilizing effect of viscosity. The analysis predicts that the phase velocity of unstable flame wave depends on not only the flame angle but also the Lewis number. For relatively short wave disturbances, still much larger than flame thickness, the most unstable wavelength is nearly independent on the flame angle and the flame can be stabilized by gravity and diffusion mechanism.

  • A Probabilistic neural network (PNN) technique for predicting the stability number for the armor blocks of breakwaters is presented. A PNN is prepared using the experimental data of van der Meer and is then compared with the empirical formula and previous artificial neural network (ANN) model. This comparison shows that a PNN can effectively predict the stability numbers in spite of data complexity, incompleteness, and incoherence, and can be an effective tool for the designers of rubble mound breakwaters to support their decision process and to improve design efficiency.

  • The hydrodynamic instability of the three-dimensional boundary-layer over a rotating disk has been numerically investigated for three cases flows using linear stability theory (i.e. Rossby number, Ro = -1, 0, and 1). Detailed numerical values of the disturbance wave number, wave frequency, azimuth angle, radius (Reynolds number, Re) and other characteristics have been calculated for $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$, Ekman and $B{\"{o}}ewadt$ boundary-layer flows. Neutral curves for these flows are presented. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning the two instability modes (Type I and Type II) by using a two-point boundary value problem code COLUEW that was based upon the adaptive orthogonal collocation method using B-spline. The prediction from the present results on both instability modes among the three cases agrees with the previously known numerical and experimental data well.

  • The wave characteristics for a non-reacting high-speed liquid jet were investigated using a linear stability theory. In this study, 2-D incompressible viscid momentum equation for a liquid jet was considered, and the effects of injection parameters, such as Weber number, Reynolds number, and density ratio, on the wave characteristics were investigated. With the wavelength obtained from the stability analysis, the atomization model was suggested. The droplet sizes after breakup were determined by the wavelengths of fast growing waves, and the mass of the shed droplets was determined by the breakup time derived by ORouke et al. It was found that in comparison with measurements of diesel fuel spray, the results of calculation had a similar trend of the decrease of overall SMD with the increase of Reynolds number.

  • The number of accidents due to slipping, falling and awkward postures are estimated to account for over forty percent of annual industrial accidents in Korea. To prevent such accidents, stability-maintaining capabilities of workers should be understood before any other approach. This research was aimed to analyze capabilities of the workers with the help of yours male students maintaining standing postures on a tiltable stability platform. The experimental result showed that tilting direction, height of pivoting point, and permissible degree of swaying made significant effects on stability-maintaining duration. Besides, humans are more capable of maintaining their standing body postures on a platform tiltable fore and aft rather than or one tiltable sideways. The number of falling or tripping supported this phenomenon. A mechanical and physical discussion on the stability was added.

  • The characteristics of opposed nonpremixed tubular flames with radiation heat loss are investigated using linear stability analysis and 2-D numerical simulations. Two extinction limits, as the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number is small or large, are confirmed using finite difference method with a simple continuation method. It is verified that the results of linear stability analysis predict the number of flame cells and the critical Da starting cellular instability or amplification of temperature near both extinction limits with good resolution.

  • The hydrodynamic stability equations are formulated for buoyancy-induced flows adjacent to a vertical, planar, isothermal surface in cold pure water. The resulting stability equations, when reduced to ordinary differential equation by a similarity transformation, constitute a two-point boundary-value(eigenvalue) problem, which was numerically solved for various values of the density extremum parameter R=( $T_{m}$ - $T_.inf./) / ( $T_{o}$ - $T_.inf./). These stability equations have been solved using a computer code designed to accurately solve two-point boundary-value problems. The present numerical study includes neutral stability results for the region of the flows corresponding to 0.0.leq. R. leq.0.15, where the outside buoyancy force reversals arise. The results show that a small amount of outside buoyancy force reversal causes the critical Grashof number $G^*/ to increase significantly. A further increase of the outside buoyancy force reversal causes the critical Grashof number to decrease. But the dimensionless frequency parameter $B^*/ at $G^*/ is systematically decreased. When the stability results of the present work are compared to the experimental data, the numerical results agree in a qualitative way with the experimental data.erimental data.

  • Unexpected ground conditions have always been a major problem for the construction of tunnel. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the risk capacity before and/or during construction of new tunnel. This paper presents the simplified risk assessment system using modified stability number (N), namely Underground Risk Index (URI) system, to evaluate the tunnel risk possibility in the design stage. URI is a scoring system for risk possibility by rating the each appraisal elements. The modified stability number (N) which is one of risk factor in the Interaction Matrix parameters such as RQD, UCS, weathering, overburden, stability number, ground water-table, RMR, permeability and so on, is used in the system. In addition, the case study is performed in order to verify the applicability of URI-system in practice.
