  • This study firstly investigated the relationships of children's social competence with the relevant factors such as mother's parental role satisfaction and parenting behaviors and secondly analyzed if parenting behaviors function as mediators. The subjects were 1865-year-old children and their mothers. The results showed that children's social competence was related to the children's sex, health, and mother's academic career. Children's social competence was influenced by the relation satisfaction between parents and children, the role conflict between wife and husband, the mother s warm-hearted and rational parenting, and the wife's satisfaction of her husband's support. The mother's warm-hearted and rational parenting functioned as a mediator(intermediary factor) between the children's social competence and the mother's parental role satisfaction.

The strongest predictor of children's social behavior was the children's emotional intelligence.

The program was composed of 10 two-hour sessions. The main goal of the program was to instill a sense of self-acknowledge, self-worth, responsibility and belonging to society and social activities. The subjects of this study were 29 children of first, second and third glades at the elementary schools in Seoul. This program was administered from March to May 1999. The data were analysed by frequency, mean, and paired t-test using the SAS program package. The major findings of this study were summarized as follows; There were significant differences in the degrees of social competency between before and after participating in the program(t=1,92 p<.05). The after-school program for school-aged children affect social competency variable as ‘initiative’(t=3,52 p<.001), but do not affect ‘sociability’, ‘responsibility’or ‘self-disclosure’. These results lead us to conclude that an after-school program of this type would be useful for developing peer-interation and for later social competency.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-worth in the relationship between social support and depressive symptoms. Seven hundred and thirty-eight 5th and 6th graders in Seoul completed questionnaires. Path analysis demonstrated that social support had a significant direct effect on depressive symptoms. This analysis also revealed that social support influenced depressive symptoms through self-worth. These findings suggest that the relationship between perceived social support and depressive symptoms in children is partially mediated through a personal variable like self-worth.

The data were collected from questionnaires completed by 656 elementary school children(2nd and 5th grade) and the middle school children(2nd grade) in rural and urban area. The statistical methods adopted for data analyses were frequencies, mean, standard deviation, T-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe-test, Two-way ANOVA, and correlation coefficient. Children received more support from parents and friends in convoy function of social support. Convoy size of social support increased with age. Rural children had larger convoy size in the inner circle, and smaller convoy size in the middle circle than urban children did.
