단일 타원 펄스형 Nd:YAG 레이저의 $TEM_{00}$ 모드화 (A study on the $TEM_{00}$ mode of the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with a single elliptical cavity)

  • Md:YAG laser has been used in many applications such as micromachining, nonlinear optical experiments, holography, and rangefinding. These applications quite often require operation of the laser at the $TEM_{00}$ mode since this mode produces the smallest beam divergence, the highest power density, and, hence, the highest brightness. In this study, a pinhole is put between a rod and a half mirror to make the $TEM_{00}$ mode, and then we measured the intensity distribution of the output beam as reducing the diameter of the pinhole from 6mm to 1.5mm. As a result, the optimum size of the pinhole fixed in a resonator to make the $TEM_{00}$ mode was obtained, and we found out that the output beam of the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with a single elliptical cavity has a Gaussian distribution.

A Comparative Study on the Performance and Emission Analysis of a Dual Fuelled Diesel Engine with Karanja Biodiesel and Natural Gas

  • In the present study, a single cylinder four stroke dual fuel diesel engine was tested to investigate the performance and emission characteristics of various test fuels. The engine was tested in dual fuel mode using diesel and Karanja biodiesel blends as pilot fuel along with Natural gas as primary fuel with a constant gas flow rate under different loading conditions. From the experimentation it was found that smoke opacity and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are at low level for all the prepared test fuels in dual fuel mode but the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and hydrocarbon (HC) were found higher. In comparison to diesel fuel, by increasing the blend percentage different emission parameters are found to be reduced. At different loading conditions all the test fuels show poor performance in dual fuel mode of operation when compared with single mode of operation with diesel and biodiesel. With increase in gas flow rates, except (NOx) and smoke emissions, the other emission parameters like CO, HC and $CO_2$ values increased for all test fuels. Again, all blended fuels showed lower performance compared to diesel. The maximum pilot fuel savings for diesel was found decreasing with the increase in karanja biodiesel. From the present work it may be concluded that Karanja biodiesel with Natural gas in dual mode can be can used as promising alternative for diesel with some required engine modifications and further research must be carried out to minimize the emissions of CO, HC and $CO_2$.

IEEE 802.16e 시스템에서 이동 단말의 에너지 절약 기법 (Power Saving Scheme for MS in IEEE 802.16e system)

  • IEEE 802.16e 표준에서는 이동 단말의 제한된 에너지를 효율적으로 관리하기 위하여 서비스의 종류에 따라 서로 다른 수면모드 작동기법을 정의하고 있다. 기존의 수면모드 작동기법에 대한 연구는 이동 단말이 하나의 서비스를 받는 환경으로 제한되어 있으므로, 여러 서비스를 동시에 받을 경우 서로 다른 수면모드 작동기법을 동시에 적용하여 실제로 에너지를 절약하는 구간을 크게 감소시킨다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 에너지 절약 기법은 이동 단말이 여러 서비스를 동시에 받는 환경에서 실제로 에너지를 절약하는 구간을 증가시킴으로써, 에너지 소모를 최소화하고 기존과 비슷한 수준의 QoS(Quality of Services)를 보장한다. 향후 IEEE 802.16e 시스템에서 이동 단말의 제한된 배터리 수명을 증가시키면서 QoS를 보장하고 싶을 경우, 본 논문에서 제안한 에너지 절약 기법이 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

  • The dc reactor type high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) is composed of three parts, a power converter, a magnetic core reactor(MCR) and a dc reactor. This study concerned with the power converter of the DC reactor type high-Tc SFCL. The rectifying devices which power converter of 6.6kV/200A SFCL consists of have to endure high voltage. We propose the dual mode power converter to reduce the voltage which each rectifying device endures. In the single phase the experiment and simulation of dual mode power converter and the simulation of power converter with one bridge rectifier are performed. The current of each system with different power converter has a same tendency and the voltage which rectifying device of dual mode power converter endures is reduced in half by comparison with that of power converter with one bridge rectifier. We found dual mode power converter can be applied to SFCL.

940-nm 350-mW Transverse Single-mode Laser Diode with AlGaAs/InGaAs GRIN-SCH and Asymmetric Structure

  • We report experimental results on 940-nm 350-mW AlGaAs/InGaAs transverse single-mode laser diodes (LDs) adopting graded-index separate confinement heterostructures (GRIN-SCH) and p,n-clad asymmetric structures, with improved temperature and small-divergence beam characteristics under high-output-power operation, for a three-dimensional (3D) motion-recognition sensor. The GRIN-SCH design provides good carrier confinement and prevents current leakage by adding a grading layer between cladding and waveguide layers. The asymmetric design, which differs in refractive-index distribution of p-n cladding layers, reduces the divergence angle at high-power operation and widens the transverse mode distribution to decrease the power density around emission facets. At an optical power of 350 mW under continuous-wave (CW) operation, Gaussian narrow far-field patterns (FFP) are measured with the full width at half maximum vertical divergence angle to be 18 degrees. A threshold current (Ith) of 65 mA, slope efficiency (SE) of 0.98 mW/mA, and operating current (Iop) of 400 mA are obtained at room temperature. Also, we could achieve catastrophic optical damage (COD) of 850 mW and long-term reliability of 60℃ with a TO-56 package.

MQW Buried RWG LD 최적화 설계 (The optimum design of MQW Buried-RWG LD)

  • 본 연구에서는 기존의 RWG LD(Ridge waveguide laser diode)보다 Ridge 폭의 제어가 쉽고 Planar화에 유리하며 측방향의 굴절률차를 성장층의 두께로 조절이 가능한 Buried RWG LD를 제안하였다. 이론해석의 결과로부터 효율적으로 동작하는 MQW B-RWG(Multi-quantum well buried ridge waveguide)LD를 제작하기 위해서는 제작하고자 하는 Ridge 폭에 따라 측장향 유효굴절률차 $\Delta_{nL}$ 의 임계값보다 약간 크게 되도록 유효굴절률 조절을 위한 $d_2(\lambda_g=1.25{\mu}m, InGaAsP layer) 층과 P-InP cald 층인 $d_3$층의 두께를 제어해야 하며 임계전류값이 최소로 되면서 측방향에서 단일모드로 동작하도록 Ridge 폭을 설계해야 한다. 그리고 측방향 유효굴절률차를 적절히 조절한다면 $6~9{\mu}m$의 Ridgechr을 가지면서 단일모드로 동작하는 LD제작이 가능함을 알 수 있었다.

선삭에서 절삭 속도 제어를 통한 표면 거칠기 향상 (Improvement of Surface Roughness by the Cutting Speed Control for Turning Operation)

  • As a basic machining process, turning is a widely used machining process in which a single-point cutting tool removes material from the surface of a rotating material. A common method of evaluating machining performance is to measure the surface roughness. In a turning operation, it is important to select cutting conditions for achieving high cutting performance. As a rule, cutting conditions can be classified into feed rate, depth of cut and insert radius. While cutting process even though cutting conditions are optimized, the average roughness can be deterioration due to wear of the cutting tool edge. In this study, the aim is to maintain the average roughness even though the cutting condition is irregularly changing within the predictable range due to the working environment. First, the surface roughness model influenced by cutting conditions is constructed based on the experimental results in a turning operation, Second, applying the sliding mode control theory to the turning operation model which is composed of the surface roughness model and the motor transfer function, the surface roughness is closed to the desired value. Finally, the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the computer simulation.

  • We report the operation of an Nd+3 doped silica single mode fiber laser pumped by a 514.5nm Ar laser. A CW output power in excess of 0.27mW at 1.096um has been obtained with a sloped efficiency of 0.23% and a 15nm badnwidth.
