In order to use Si as an anode material for lithium-ion battery, the particle size was controlled to less than $0.5{\mu}m$ and carbon was coated on the surface with the thickness less than 10 nm. The carbon fiber was grown on the Si surface with 50~150 wt%, and the carbon coating was carried out once again. The Si composite material was mixed with dissimilar metals to increase the conductivity, and graphite was mixed to improve cyclic life characteristics. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of composite materials were measured with XRD, SEM, TEM and coin cell. The discharge capacity of Si/PC/CNF/PC was lower than that of Si/PC (Pyrolytic Carbon)/CNF (Carbon Nano Fiber). However, the cyclic life of Si/PC/CNF/PC was higher. Initial discharge capacity of 1512 mA h g-1 at 0.2 C rate and initial efficiency of 78% were shown. It also showed a capacity retention of 94% in 10 cycles.
Dielectrophoretic filtering and alignment of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were tested using deuterium oxide as a solvent. A solution of deuterium oxide-SWCNTs was dropped on top of a silicon chip and an ac electric field was applied between pre-defined electrodes. Deuterium oxide was found to be a better solvent than hydrogen oxide for the dielectrophoresis process with higher efficiency of filtering. This was demonstrated by comparing Raman spectra measured on the initial solution with those measured on the filtered solution. We found that the aligned nanotubes along the electric field were not deposited on the substrate but suspended in solution, forming chain-like structures along the field lines. This so-called pearl chain formation of CNTs was verified by electrical measurements through the aligned tubes. The solution was frozen in liquid nitrogen prior to the electrical measurements to maintain the chain formation. The current-voltage characteristics for the sample demonstrate the existence of conduction channels in the solution, which are associated with the SWCNT chain structures.
Carbon fiber reinforced SiC composites (C/SiC) have high-temperature stability and excellent thermal shock resistance, and are currently being applied in extreme environments, for example, as aerospace propulsion parts or in high-performance brake systems. However, their low thermal conductivity, compared to metallic materials, are an obstacle to energy efficiency improvements via utilization of regenerative cooling systems. In order to solve this problem, the present study investigated the bonding strength between carbon fiber and matrix material within ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials, demonstrating the relation between the microstructure and bonding, and showing that the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity may be improved by treatment of the carbon fibers. When fiber surface was treated with a nitric acid solution, the observed segment crack areas within the subsequently generated CMC increased from 6 to 10%; moreover, it was possible to enhance the thermal conductivity from 10.5 to 14 W/m·K, via the same approach. However, fiber surface treatment tends to cause mechanical damage of the final composite material by fiber etching.
Carbon fabric-reinforced silicon carbide composites (C/SiC) have attracted a considerable attention for high temperature structural application because of their outstanding oxidation resistance property and thermal shock resistance. In this study, we reported on the preparation of C/SiC composites by the polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) method. For this, polycarbosilane solution was impregnated into the carbon fabric and then cured by electron beam irradiation under argon atmosphere. Afterwards, the cured composite was pyrolyzed at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under argon atmosphere to produce the C/SiC composite. The porosity and density of the C/SiC composite were 13.5% and $2.44\;g/cm^3$, respectively, when the impregnation of the carbon fabric with the 30 wt% polycarbosilane solution conducted four times. In addition, in the isothermal experiment at $1500\;^{\circ}C$ in air for 5 h, the 95.9 wt% of the C/SiC composite was remained, indicating that the prepared C/SiC composite has a outstanding oxidation resistance.
The (B.Si)C composite was prepared form the mixture of metal boron, silicon, and carbon powders in Ar atmosphere by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis Chemical Furnace. The characterization of synthesized power and sintered body were investigated. The microstructure of sintered body suggested that SiC boundary was made between B4C grains. The most excellent mechanical properties, the relative density of 95% oftheoretical value, 3 point flexural strength of 360MPa, and fracture toughness of 3.6MN/m3/2 could be obtained in 80wt% B4C-20 wt% SiC composite were obtained.

Thermally expandable microsphere and aerogel composite was prepared by chemical compositization. Microsphere can produce synergies with aerogel, especially an enhancement of mechanical property. Through condensation between sulfonated microsphere and hydrolyzed silica sol, chemically-connected composite aerogel could be prepared. The presence of hydroxyl group on the sulfonated microsphere was observed, which was the prime functional group of reaction with hydrolyzed silica sol. Silica aerogel-coated microsphere was confirmed through microstructure analysis. The presence of silicon-carbon absorption band and peaks from composite aerogel was observed, which proved the chemical bonding between them. A relatively low thermal conductivity value of $0.063W/m{\cdot}K$ was obtained.
In this study, the electrochemical properties of dopamine coated silicon/silicon carbide/carbon(Si/SiC/C) composite materials were investigated to improve cycle stability and rate performance of silicon-based anode active material for lithium-ion batteries. After synthesizing CTAB/SiO2 using the Stöber method, the Si/SiC composites were prepared through the magnesium thermal reduction method with NaCl as heat absorbent. Then, carbon coated Si/SiC anode materials were synthesized through polymerization of dopamine. The physical properties of the prepared Si/SiC/C anode materials were analyzed by SEM, TEM, XRD and BET. Also the electrochemical performance were investigated by cycle stability, rate performance, cyclic voltammetry and EIS test of lithium-ion batteries in 1 M LiPF6 (EC: DEC = 1:1 vol%) electrolyte. The prepared 1-Si/SiC showed a discharge capacity of 633 mAh/g and 1-Si/SiC/C had a discharge capacity of 877 mAh/g at 0.1 C after 100 cycles. Therefore, it was confirmed that cycle stability was improved through dopamine coating. In addition, the anode materials were obtain a high capacity of 576 mAh/g at 5 C and a capacity recovery of 99.9% at 0.1 C/0.1 C.
The conversion of carbon preforms to dense SiC by liquid infiltration is a prospectively low-cost and reliable method of forming SiC-Si composites with complex shapes and high densities. Si powder was coated on top of a 2.0wt.% Y2O3-added carbon preform, and reaction bonded silicon carbide (RBSC) was prepared by infiltrating molten Si at 1,450℃ for 1-8 h. Reactive sintering of the Y2O3-free carbon preform caused Si to be pushed to one side, thereby forming cracking defects. However, when prepared from the Y2O3-added carbon preform, a SiC-Si composite in which Si is homogeneously distributed in the SiC matrix without cracking can be produced. Using the Si + C → SiC reaction at 1,450℃, 3C and 6H SiC phases, crystalline Si, and Y2O3 were generated based on XRD analysis, without the appearance of graphite. The RBSC prepared from the Y2O3-added carbon preform was densified by increasing the density and decreasing the porosity as the holding time increased at 1,450℃. Dense RBSC, which was reaction sintered at 1,450℃ for 4 h from the 2.0wt.% Y2O3-added carbon preform, had an apparent porosity of 0.11% and a relative density of 96.8%.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.
In this study, a carbon coated hollow silicon (HSi/C) composite material was prepared for anode material of high-capacity lithiun-ion battery. Hollow silica (HSiO2) was synthesized by the Stöber method with CTAB (N-Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide). The HSi/C anode composite was manufactured by carbon coating after magnesiothermic reduction of HSiO2. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of the prepared anode materials were investigated based on CTAB amount. In the FE-SEM analysis, it was found that the HSiO2 particle size increased as CTAB amount decreased, but shell thickness decreased. The HSi/C composites exhibited high initial discharge capacities of 1866.7, 2164.5 and 2188.6 mAh/g with various CTAB ratios (0.5, 1.0, 1.5), respectively. After 100 cycles of charge-discharge, 0.5-HSi/C demonstrated a high reversible capacity of 1171.3 mAh/g and a capacity retention of 70.9%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was employed to analyze the impedance characteristics, and it revealed that 0.5-HSi/C showed more stable resistance characteristics than HSi/C composites with other CTAB amount over 20 cycles.
