Seismic isolation systems employ structural control that protect both buildings and vibration-sensitive contents from destructive effects of earthquakes. Structural control is divided into three main groups: passive, active, and semi-active. Among them, semi-active isolation systems, which can reduce floor displacements and accelerations concurrently, has gained importance in recent years since they don't require large power or pose stability problems like active ones. However, their seismic performance may vary depending on the variations that may be observed in the mechanical properties of semi-active devices and/or seismic isolators. Uncertainties relating to isolators can arise from variations in geometry, boundary conditions, material behavior, or temperature, or aging whereas those relating to semi-active control devices can be due to thermal changes, inefficiencies in calibrations, manufacturing errors, etc. For a more realistic evaluation of the seismic behavior of semi-active isolated buildings, such uncertainties must be taken into account. Here, the probabilistic behavior of semi-active isolated buildings under historical pulse-like near-fault earthquakes is evaluated in terms of their performance in preserving structural integrity and protecting vibration-sensitive contents considering aforementioned uncertainties via Monte-Carlo simulations of 3-story and 9-story semi-active isolated benchmark buildings. The results are presented in the form of fragility curves and probability of failure profiles.
The generalized tangential stiffness matrix of semi-rigid frame element with shear deformations based on Haringx's shear theory is newly derived and compared with the previous study based on Engesser's shear theory. Also, linearized elastic and geometric stiffness matrices are newly presented from the exact tangential stiffness matrix. In oder to obtain the inelastic system buckling load of shear flexible semi-rigid frame structure, the Ef method by tangential modulus theory is adopted and the FE analysis programs are developed. Finally, the shear and semi-rigid effects of system bucking are investigated by two numerical examples.
We consider circular Rayleigh problem of hydrodynamic stability which deals with linear stability of axial flows of an incompressible iniviscid homogeneous fluid to axisymmetric disturbances. For this problem, we obtained two parabolic instability regions which intersect with Batchelor and Gill semi-circle under some condition. This has been illustrated with examples. Also, we derived upper bound for the amplification factor.
The use of composite semi-rigid connections is not fully exploited, in spite of its great number of advantages. Composite semi-rigid connections may lead to an optimal moment distribution that will render lighter structures. Furthermore, using the appropriate semi-rigid connection design, the stability of the frames against lateral loads may entirely rely on the joint stiffness, thus avoiding bracing systems and permitting more diaphanous designs. Although modern codes, such as the Eurocode 4 (EC4), propose thorough methods of analysis they do not provide enough insight and simplicity from the design point of view. The purpose of this paper is to introduce practical and efficient methods of analysis that will facilitate the work of a structural analyst starting from the global analysis of the composite frame and ending on the final connection design. A key aspect is the definition of the stiffness and strength of the connections that will lead to an optimal moment distribution in the composite beams. Two examples are presented in order to clarify the application of the proposed methods and to demonstrate the advantages of the semi-rigid composite design with respect to the alternative pinned and rigid ones. The final aim of the paper is to stimulate and encourage the designer on the use of composite semi-rigid structures.
This paper describes the influence on the nonlinear critical speed results of a specific railway vehicle depending on various constraint conditions. In the roller-rig tests, proper constraints are inevitable to safely hold the test vehicles. Particularly, the test results using KRRI roller-rig are more sensitive to constraint conditions because it is a kind of semi-full car type. In this study, nonlinear critical speed of specific vehicle with regards to several constraint cases were predicted by computational analysis and these results were compared to find the suitable constraint conditions. And also the deviation of semi-full car model from actual full car model was investigated. According to the bifurcation analysis, the nonlinear critical speed are dependent with the constraint condition and car-body yaw motion should be free to achieve more accurate results. And the difference between semi-full and full car model was so small that KRRI's semi-full car model are valid as long as the stability is concerned.
Passive, semi-active and active dampers have been used to dissipate energy in mechanical systems. Semi-active dampers have higher performance than passive dampers and require lower power to operate than active dampers. Its damping characteristics can be changed appropriately for varying conditions. In this paper, we developed a semi-active damper based on Magnetorheological(MR) fluid. MR fluid has a variable damping characteristics proportional for the magnetic field intensity. It has several advantages such as high strength, low viscosity, robustness in impurities and wide temperature range of operational stability. We designed a constrained rotary MR damper base on valve mode which can dissipate more energy per unit volume. The system with Bingham characteristics is obtained and proved by the experiment.
The primary aim of this study is to investigate new semi-abrasive free slurry including acid colloidal silica and hydrogen peroxide for copper chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP). In general, slurry for copper CMP consists of colloidal silica as an abrasive, organic acid as a complex-forming agent, hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent, a film forming agent, a pH control agent and several additives. We developed new semi-abrasive free slurry (SAFS) including below 0.5% acid colloidal silica. We evaluated additives as stabilizers for hydrogen peroxide as well as accelerators in tantalum nitride CMP process. We also estimated dispersion stability and Zeta potential of the acid colloidal silica with additives. The extent of enhancement in tantalum nitride CMP was verified through anelectrochemical test. This approach may be useful for the application of single and first step copper CMP slurry with one package system.
