  • C4I system is an integrated battlefield information system that automates the five elements of command, control, communications, computers, and information to efficiently manage the battlefield. C4I systems play an important role in collecting and analyzing enemy positions, situations, and operational results to ensure that all services have the same picture in real time and optimize command decisions and mission orders. However, the current C4I has limitations whenever a new weapon system is introduced, as it only provides battlefield visualization in a single area focusing on the battlefield situation for each military service. In a future battlefield that expands not only to land, sea, and air domains but also to cyber and space domains, improved command and control decisions will be possible if organic data from various weapon systems is gathered to quickly visualize the battlefield situation desired by the user. In this study, the visualization technology applicable to the future C4I system is divided into map area, situation map area, and display area. The technological implementation of this future C4I system is based on various data and communication means such as 5G networks, and is expected to enable hyper-connected battlefield visualization that utilizes a variety of high-quality information to enable realistic and efficient battlefield situation awareness.

  • The geotectonics and geomorphic structure of Korea resulted from the Song-rim Disturbance and the Daebo orogenic movements. Afterward this mountainous peninsula underwent several geological changes on a small scale, and it was also claimed that the steady rising of the elevated peneplain of the eastern coast and the submerging of the southwestern coastal area are largely due to the tilted block movement. These views have been generally accepted good in several ways, but they are limited in range or lacking in theoretical integration. The present writer investigated the geology of the Mt. Chi-ri-san and the Honam coal mining area for a geological map in 1965, respectively. The results of these studies convinced the present writer that the conventional views, which were based upon a theory of lateral pressure should be reconsidered in many respects, and more recent studies made it clear that the morphological development in the southwestern area can be better explained by the orogenic movement and rock control. The measurement of submerging speed of the western coastal area (Pak. Y. A., 1969) and a new account on the geology and tectonics of the Mid-central region of South Korea (Kim O.J., 1970) act as an encouragement to a new explanation. The present writer's researches on the extreme southwestern portion of the peninsula show that the steady submerging of this area cannot be attributed to a simple downthrown block phenomenon caused by block movement. It is no more than the result of the differential movement of uplifting in the eastern and western coastal areas and the rising of sea-level in the post-glacial period. This phenomenon could be easily explained by the comparison of the rate of rise in sea-level and amount of heat flow between Korea and other areas in the world. The existance of the erosional planes in the Sobaik-San ranges also provide an evidence of an upheaval in the western coast area. Though the Sobaik-San ranges largely follow the direction of the Sinian system. They consist of the numerous branches, whose trends run more or less differently from their main trend because of the disharmonic folding, are converged into Mt. Sobaik-San and Chupungryung. The undulation of the land is not wholely caused by orogenic movements, where as the present writer confirmed that the diversity of morphological development is the direct reflection of geological conditions such as rocks and processes which constitute the basic elements of geomorphic structure. An east-west directed mountain range which could be named as Hansan mountain range, was claimed to be oriented by the joint control. The geological conditions such as a special erosion and weathering of agglomerate and breccia tuff usually produce pot-hole like submarine features which cause the whirling phenomenon at the southwestern coast channel.

  • For effective and accurate prediction of overpressure in the Efomeh field, located in the Niger delta basin of Nigeria, integrated seismic and borehole analyses were undertaken. Normal and abnormal pore pressure zones were delineated based on the principle of normal and deviation from normal velocity trends. The transition between the two trends signifies the top of overpressure. The overpressure tops were picked at regular intervals from seismic data using interval velocities obtained by applying Dix's approximation. The accuracy of the predicted overpressure zone was confirmed from the sonic velocity data of the Efomeh 01 well. The variation to the depth of overpressure between the predicted and observed values was less than 10mat the Efomeh 01 well location, with confidence of over 99 per cent. The depth map generated shows that the depth distribution to the top of the overpressure zone of the Efomeh field falls within the sub-sea depth range of 2655${\pm}$2m (2550 ms) to 3720${\pm}$2m (2900 ms). This depth conforms to thick marine shales using the Efomeh 01 composite log. The lower part of the Agbada Formation within the Efomeh field is overpressured and the depth of the top of the overpressure does not follow any time-stratigraphic boundary across the field. Prediction of the top of the overpressure zone within the Efomeh field for potential wells that will total depth beyond 2440m sub-sea is very important for safer drilling practice as well as the prevention of lost circulation.

  • An airborne magnetometer survey was carried out over an offshore area of about $200,000km^2$ from the southeastern, southern and western part of Korea. Detailed magnetic studies on the geological structure of the southern part of above area ($100,000km^2$) was accomplished. Residual aeromagnetic map was made in order to delineate magnetic provinces, magnetic lineaments and sedimentary basins by application of least square method using computer system. To determine the depth of the sedimentary basins pseudo-gravimetric method was applied. 1. The area studied is divided into four magnetic provinces for the purpose of interpretation on the basis of the magnetic maps. 2. Near shore area and its attached islands of southern part (fiirst and second magnetic province) can be regarded as being the extension from the land geology due to presentation of strong magnetic anomalies and shallow magnetic basements. 3. Magnetic lineament 1-1 is strong magnetic anomalous region which is presumably relevant to volcanic activities in Cretaceous. The depth of magnetic basement of the lineament was determined to 1,500 m. Negative magnetic anomalous zones B1-1 and B1-2 which represent Tertiary basins showed depth of magnetic basement 3 km and 4 km each. The latter can be interpreted as extension of the Taiwan basin which is consisted of Tertiary sediments. 4. Magnetic lineament 2-1 coincide with Rainan-Fukien massif running NE-SW direction. A lineament located in central part of magnetic lineament 2-1 is well connected with extension of Sobacksan anticlinal axis on land. Volcanic rocks in Gyongsang system concentrated along this lineament. 5. The characteristics of magnetic pattern in the southern Yellow sea basin of western part of Jeju island show weaker magnetic anomalies and deeper magnetic basements than first and second magnetic provinces indicating geological structure of this basin seems to be quite different from that of Jeju strait. 6. In southern part of Jeju island, smoother magnetic pattern develope southward. Maximum depth of magnetic basement in sedimentary basins BIV-1 and BIV-2 were determined down to 6,000 m increasing its thickness toward Taiwan up to 11,000 m in the shelf area off Taichung, Taiwan. Judging from the fact that hydrocarbon was founded in the Tertiary sediments of western coastal area of Taiwan, it can be expected that hydrocarbon will be existed in these sedimentary basins of southern part of Jeju island.

  • Using the meteorological data, surface weather map, and oceanographic data for 5 years(1984-1988). I investigated the characteristics of the fog occurrence and the role of the inshore in Pusan about the fog occurrence. And the meteorological data and sea surface temperature(SST), which were observed in July, 1989 in Suyoung Bay, were compared with those in Pusan. The fogs in Pusan concentrate in May, June and July. And at fog occurrence time the principal wind directions are Southwest(SW) winds, which easily supply with water vapor, and a series of Northeast(NE) wind. At the fog days pressure patterns are pattern 7 in spring time (March, April, and May) and pattern 10 and pattern 13 in summer time (June, July, and August). Also the advection fog(sea fog) is closely related with the relationship between warm and cold advection in 850~700mb and cold and warm SST rather than the increase of the instability of atmosphere in 850~500mb. The fogs in Taegu, which is the inland region, mainly occur at dawn in fall time due to the strong night radiation fog. On the other hand in Pusan the coastal region, the fogs occur from late spring time to summer time (May, June, and July). Because there is the abundant supply of the water vapor from the ocean owing to a series of South(S) wind at this time. Then the atmosphere, which has high relative humidity, reaches easily the supersaturation by the radiation cooling. In Suyoung Bay and Pusan the meteorological observation data, SST and fog days are almost similar. And I think that the mechanism of the fog occurrence nearly accords with both regions.

  • This paper introduces core techniques on ship detection and tracking based on a compact HF radar platform which is necessary to establish a wide-area surveillance network. Currently, most HF radar sites are primarily optimized for observing sea surface radial velocities and bearings. Therefore, many ship detection systems are vulnerable to error sources such as environmental noise and clutter when they are applied to these practical surface current observation purpose systems. In addition, due to Korea's geographical features, only compact HF radars which generates non-uniform antenna response and has no information on target information are applicable. The ship detection and tracking techniques discussed in this paper considers these practical conditions and were evaluated by real data collected from the Yellow Sea, Korea. The proposed method is composed of two parts. In the first part, ship detection, a constant false alarm rate based detector was applied and was enhanced by a PCA subspace decomposition method which reduces noise. To merge multiple detections originated from a single target due to the Doppler effect during long CPIs, a clustering method was applied. Finally, data association framework eliminates false detections by considering ship maneuvering over time. According to evaluation results, it is claimed that the proposed method produces satisfactory results within certain ranges.

  • We have studied the feasibility of geostatistics approach to enhancing analysis of sparsely obtained seismic data by combining with satellite gravity data. The shallow depth and numerous fishing nets in The Yellow Sea, west of Korea, makes it difficult to do seismic surveys in this area. Therefore, we have attempted to use geostatistics to integrate the seismic data along with gravity data. To evaluate the feasibility of this approach, we have extracted only a few seismic profile data from previous surveys in the Yellow Sea and performed integrated analysis combining with the results from gravity data under the assumption that seismic velocity and density have a high physical correlation. First, we analyzed the correlation between extracted seismic profiles and depths obtained from gravity inversion. Next, we transferred the gravity depth to travel time using non-linear indicator transform and analyze residual values by kriging with varying local means. Finally, the reconstructed time structure map was compared with the original seismic section given in the previous study. Our geostatistical approach demonstrates relatively satisfactory results and especially, in the boundary area where seismic lines are sparse, gives us more in-depth information than previously available.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the wise use and the management of intertidal environment. For tills purpose, we selected the Kanghwa island mudflat which is one of the most important intertidal region in Korea peninsula. The main research method is surface sediment and several map analysis. The results are as follows. (1) The study area is worldwide coastal wetland in view of ecology and geomorphology. But most of the salt marsh has been reclaimed since Japanese colonial period, the study area is mainly composed of mudflat. (2) The mean tidal regime of study area is 7.3m. From this tidal regime, the study area is subdivided into four distinct areas: the high intertidal area the middle intertidal area the low intertidal area and the shallow sea area terrestrial area near mudflat. (3) The mean particle size of surface sediment is sand 41.5%, silt 47.3%, clay 11.2%. This particle size pattern indicates the ecological characteristics of surface sediment of the study area. The proportion of clay is increasing to the open sea. (5) The pursuit of the wise use and the management must be implemented by the consideration of not only ecologic and sedimentary characteristics but also of the eco-tour site plan. And the entire use and management subject is different in each area.

  • In order to suggest the useful information on the fishing ground of the bigeye tuna Thunnus obesus(LOWE), a data base system was formed with catch data of the Korean tuna long liners during from 1975 to 1987 by using a set of 16 bits personal computer. This data base was constructed of the handling program and 4 types of data file processed from the monthly and yearly catch data of the whole tunas and the bigeye tuna. And when the system was started, the map of one among various Oceans such as the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. is drawn on the monitor. And then the catch rates of the whole tunas or the catch ratios of bigeye tunas are indicated by the figured symbols and the colors on the sea divisions of 5$^{\circ}$ space of longitude and latitude respectively at the same time. Also this system has the preestimating program on the catch rates of the whole tunas and the bigeye tuna in the desired month and sea divisions. In the results than this data base system was handled and tested, very useful informations were obtained for the detection of tunas, especially bigeye tuna, and the preestimation was possible in a desired level.

  • This study assessed the feasibility to apply Two-band and Three-band reflectance models for chlorophyll-a estimation in turbid productive waters whose scale is smaller and narrower than ocean using a high spatial resolution image. Those band ratio models were successfully applied to analyzing chlorophyll-a concentrations of ocean or coastal water using Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS), Sea-viewing Wide Field-fo-view Sensor(SeaWiFS), Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer(MERIS), etc. Two-band and Three-band models based on band ratio such as Red and NIR band were generally used for the Chl-a in turbid waters. Two-band modes using Red and NIR bands of RapidEye image showed no significant results with $R^2$ 0.38. To enhance a band ratio between absorption and reflection peak, We used red-edge band(710 nm) of RapidEye image for Twoband and Three-band models. Red-RE Two-band and Red-RE-NIR Three-band reflectance model (with cubic equation) for the RapidEye image provided significance performances with $R^2$ 0.66 and 0.73, respectively. Their performance showed the 'Approximate Prediction' with RPD, 1.39 and 1.29 and RMSE, 24.8, 22.4, respectively. Another three-band model with quadratic equation showed similar performances to Red-RE two-band model. The findings in this study demonstrated that Two-band and Three-band reflectance models using a red-edge band can approximately estimate chlorophyll-a concentrations in a turbid river water using high-resolution satellite image. In the distribution map of estimated Chl-a concentrations, three-band model with cubic equation showed lower values than twoband model. In the further works, quantification and correction of spectral interferences caused by suspended sediments and colored dissolved organic matters will improve the accuracy of chlorophyll-a estimation in turbid waters.
