  • Filtration experiments were conducted to determine the characteristics of manganese removal in filtration using 4 different filter media including sand and manganese sand(MS). Filtration velocity was 123 m/d and the flow rate was $3.9m^3/d$ per column. Duration of these experiments was about one year, and manganese dioxide accumulation, turbidity removal, manganese removal, and organic material removal were examined depending on filter media. When filter influent(residual chlorine 1.0 mg/L) with an average manganese concentration of 0.208 mg/L was fed through a filter column, the sand+MS and MS columns removed 98.9% and 99.2% of manganese respectively on an annual basis. When there is need to replace the sand filters with a MS filter to remove manganese, it was shown that the replacement of a partial sand filter with MS had adequate manganese removal.

  • In this study, in order to clarify the effect of the direction of cyclic shear on the post-earthquake settlement the multi-directional shear tests were carried out for Toyoura Japan standard sand, Genkai natural sand and the Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS). In a series of tests, number of strain cycles was changed as n=5-200 and the shear strain amplitude varied from 0.1% to 1.0%. The relative density was also changed as Dr=50, 60 and 70%. From the test results for Toyoura sand and GBFS, it is clarified that the post cyclic settlement is relatively large at the small relative density and becomes large with the shear strain amplitude. When the influence of the direction of cyclic shear is decreases, the post cyclic settlement strain for Toyoura sand is converged to a constant value, but the GBFS is increased with the number of strain cycles.

  • In this study, we analyzed the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate dependant on the column depths using various absorbents such as zeolite silica sand, and activated carbon through the column test. In addition, we analyzed electrochemical adsorption behaviors of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate through the quantum mechanical calculation based on density functional theory calculation. Experimental results represent the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and phosphate are zeolite > activated carbon > silica sand, and activated carbon > zeolite > silica sand, respectively. Zeolite shows high adsorption property for ammonia nitrogen over 90%, regardless of the column depth, while activated carbon exhibits high adsorption property for both ammonia nitrogen and phosphate as the column depth for filter media increases. Theoretical findings using DFT calculation for the adsorption behaviors of adsorbents (activated carbon and silica sand) and nutrients ($PO_4{^{3-}}$, $NH_4{^{+}}$) show that activated carbon represented narrower HOMO-LUMO band gap with high adsorption energy, and even more favorable environment for electron adsorption than silica sand, which leads to the effective removal of nutrients.

  • Stone column is one of the soft ground improvement method, which can enhance ground conditions such as the settlement reduction and the increasement of bearing capacity with applying the crushed stone instead of sand. In recent, general construction material, sand is in short of supply. Therefore, the bearing capacity improvement by the stone column is considered as the alternative method needed in many cases so the bearing capacity estimation is considered as important point. Nevertheless, adequate estimation methods to predict bearing capacity of stone column considering stone column and improvement effect of ground is not yet prepared. For the analysis of above mentioned points, the behavior of stone column were simulated as numerically on various property cases of crushed stone and surrounded ground. Through the numerical analysis of simulation results, the formula for the bearing capacity estimation of stone column was suggested. This formula was verified by comparing the prediction result of in situ test.

  • Laboratory evaluation of the effect of fines, confine stress and dry density on the permeability characteristics in sand columns is presented. The triaxial permeability tests were conducted on different contents of fines(5, 15, 25, $35{\%}$), confine stress ($\sigma_3^'=0.5,\;1.0,\;2.0,\;3.0{\cal}kg/{\cal}cm^2$), and dry density($\gamma_d=1.50,\;1.55,\;1.60,\;1.65{\cal}g{\cal}cm^3$). The results of triaxial permeability tests showed that as the contents of fines, confine stress and dry density became increase permeability became decrease. For the contents of fines, when the fines that smaller than $0.01{\cal}mm$ increases the permeability decreases significantly. For the confine stress and the dry density, the permeability is decreased significantly at changes of the confine stress($\sigma_3^'=0.5{\~}1.0{\cal}kg/{\cal}cm^2$) and the dry density($\gamma_d=1.50{\~}1.55{\cal}g/{\cal}cm^3$) at lower levels.

  • Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.

  • Hematite-coated sand was examined for the application of the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) to the arsenic-contaminated subsurface in the metal mining areas. The removal efficiency of As in a batch and a flow system was investigated through the adsorption isotherm, removal kinetics and column experiments. Hematite-coated sand followed a linear adsorption isotherm with high adsorption capacity at low level concentrations of As (<1.0 mg/L). In the column experiments, high content of hematite-coated sand enhanced the removal efficiency, but the amount of the As removal decreased due to the higher affinity of As (V) than As (III) and reduced adsorption kinetics in the flow system. Therefore. the amount of hematite-coated sand, the adsorption affinity of As species and removal kinetics determined the removal efficiency of As in a flow system.

  • To examine the general features of a sand-clay composite triaxial test by making specimen varying ratios of diameters (dw) of sand columns that are installed on the soft ground as drains to diameters (de) of drain zone so called drainage space ratio (n=de/dw), densities of the granular columns, and strength of soft soils round around. I also conducted a test to research the reinforcement ability and effects of the ground when the granular columns are wrapped with supplementary materials such as geotextile. The results of the triaxial compression test showed that the shear strength increase is much big when the granular columns are wrapped with supplementary materials, while the shear strength increases as the diameter and density of the granular column increase in general. Also the drainage space ratio shows a distinct increase just below 3 and a similar shear behavior to sand is appeared. The pore water pressure coefficient decreases as the drainage space ratio decreases, however, when the drainage space ratio is less than 3~4, it declines significantly as shown in the results of shear behavior.

  • Municipal landfill leachate, a major source of soil contamination and ground water pollution, causes serious environmental problems. To investigate the removal efficiency of pollutants in the leachate by sand, briquet ash, fly ash, and activated carbon columns, COD and some pollutants in the leachate passed through each column for 8 weeks were examined. Average COD removal efficiency for 8 weeks was 83%, 45%, and 43% by activated carbon, briquet ash and fly ash columns, respectively. COD was not effectively reduced by sand column. Average ${NH_4}\;^+$ removal efficiency for 8 weeks was more than 60% by ail columns. Hardness was effectively removed for 8 weeks by fly ash and activated carbon columns. Anoins including $PO_4\;^{3-}$, $CI^-$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ were not removed by all columns.

  • Engineered mixtures composed of rigid sand particles and soft rubber particles are tested to investigate their behavior with strain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions (sf) to identify response using small strain resonant column, intermediate strain oedometer, and large strain direct shear tests. The small strain shear modulus and damping ratio are determined with volumetric sand fractions. The asymmetric frequency response curve increases with decreasing sand fraction. Linear responses of shear strain and damping ratio with shear strain are observed at the mixture of sf=0.2. Vertical strain increases with decreasing sand fraction. Mixtures with $04.{\leq}sf{\leq}0.6$ show the transitional stress-deformation behavior from rubber-like to sand-like behavior. The friction angle increases with the sand fraction and no apparent peak strength is observed in mixture without sf=1.0.
