The river-bed variation and the sediment transport in an alluvial stream are very complicated physical phenomena, especially in a stream where the dam construction prevents the supply of earth and sand from upper tributaries Therefore, the mathematical modeling is needed to establish. The purpose of this study is to apply river-bed variation to the Han River downstream by the conception of gradually varied unsteady flow instead of that of steady flow in order to decrease errors. For the variation and forecast of river-bed, the numerical analysis has been made in this study by way of discharge variation and river-bed variation. In conclusion, the numerical analysis shows that river-bed variation, sediment transport , and their forecast have similarity to natural phenomena and that river-bed variation is greatly affected in sediment transport by discharge variation and retention time(duration). Therefore, the errors of numerical analysis can be reduced by the application of flood data instead of continuous discharge data.

When the flood occurs in the alluvial rivers, the rivers adjust to the flood by means of the mechanism of the river bed variations and its morphological changes to pass that safely, the numerical model was developed to simulate the process of the alluvial river bed variation due to flood wave and carried out by the flood routing for flood wave and the sediment routing for river bed variation. The flood wave, river bed variation, and bed material size distribution may be analysed and predicted by this model. The ability of this model to predict the process of river bed response was proved by the application to the reach from Paldang dam to Indogyo site. In view of the flood analysis considering the sediment process, the effects of river bed variation for the flood routing may be negligible because the river bed variation is smaller than the unsteady flow variation during the same period. By the application of this model, it is shown that, in occurring of sequential flood events, the variation of the river bed and bed material size distribution due to flood wave is more dependent on the first flood event than the latter flood events, and that the river bed variation in this reach of the downstream Han river is dependent on the degradation and the coarsening of bed materials.

River bed variation drops storage capacity of dams and reservoirs, and furthermore deteriorates safety of banks and peers. Therefore, understanding of bed variation is important to use and manage river water. Study section is downstream part of Ji- Cheon nearby Ji-Cheon Bridge which is located in Gum river basin. The river surveying at fourteen places with the length of 1,320m were undertaken on November 7, 2003 and September 24, 2004, and the results of river surveying were analyzed for the study. Real bed variation was compared with the simulation results of HEC-6 and GSTARS 3.0. Cross section data for the simulation of HEC-6 and GSTARS3.0 were composed of the basis of river surveying data on November 7, 2003. Hydrological data were acquired from Gu-Ryong watermark located at Ji-Chun Bridge. The research results revealed that when using Toffaleti equation, simulation results of two models were similar to the real bed variation. The bed variation simulated by using GSRARS 3.0 with only one stream tube was similar to the real bed variation. The bed variation simulated by using two models(HEC-6 and GSTRARS 3.0) with Toffaleti equation was also similar to the real bed variation. Therefore, it is expected that HEC-6 and GSTARS 3.0 models have applicability to predict the bed variation at the downstream of Ji-Cheon.
This study is concerned with the analysis of the formulas which give both the quantity of the total, suspended and bed loads as functions of stream and sediment characteristics. The numerical analysis of sediment discharge formulas is described and the computer program for the following 4 formulas are developed; (1) Einstein's Formula (2) Toffaleti's Formula (3) Brown's Formula (4) Kikkawa's Formula In the analysis of these formulas, the hydraulic data of the river in the downstream of the Han River are used, and these formulas have been tested by application and comparison with observed data and the results computed by the computer. In these methods and procedures, the most satisfactory and convenient formula is selected. The design and planning of the river channel regulation works are determined by computing the river bed variation by using the sediment discharge computed from the selected formula.
This study was conducted with the national river, Munsancheon, which is located in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. The sediment discharge of Munsancheon was directly measured to analyze the sediment characteristics, and the results were used in the numerical model to predict the long-term river bed variation. The flow-total sediment discharge relation was derived using the measured total sediment discharge, and the results were compared with the total sediment discharge that was calculated using the existing prediction formula to derive a proper sediment discharge prediction method. In the actual measurements, the total annual sediment discharge was 5,478 ton/year, and the specific sediment discharge was 29.23 ton/$km^2$/year. The Ackers & White formula resulted in the values very close to the actual measurements. With the actual sediment discharge, geographical and hydrologic data as the input variables, HEC-6 and GSTARS models were comparatively analyzed. The test results showed that the HEC-6 model is suitable for the reliable prediction of the long-term river bed variation. Accordingly, the model was used for the long-term river bed variation prediction in this study. In the case of Munsancheon, deposition was continued in the downstream area and erosion occurred in the upstream area on the whole. It was expected that the stream would be stabilized in the river bed condition of 20 years later. The river bed variation was within 1 m, which was at the significance level. In the downstream area that is influenced by tide, however, the accumulation was continuously increasing within the section 2,000-7,000 m from the outlet. It seems that this should be considered in establishing the river management plans.

The stage-discharge relation curve(rating curve) is the basic formula in hydrologic analysis. It plays an important role in converting to the discharge from available flood water level data including the daily mean stage. However, the river induces a cross section change at the gauging station because of the composed material of the river bed and three processes of the stream flow; i.e., erosion, transportation, and sedimentation. Rating curve has to be revised according to the temporal variation of the river bed due to the those factors. In this study, the basic rating curve is developed with respect to the current river bed to convert the existing rating curves and also to seize the hydraulic and geometric characteristics for the temporal variation of the river bed, relationships among the basic rating curve and the existing rating curves, water level, cross sectional area, and flow velocity are analyzed. Indogyo station, which is not only the key station of the Han river but also greatly changed the river bed after completion of the Han river development plan during the year 1983 to 1986, was chosen for the study. In this study, the river bed is assumed in a dynamic equilibrium condition. The basic rating curve is developed using hydrologic data of the physical year of 1987. For a given discharge, relationships for conversion of previous data, stage and velocity, the current one are formulated. To verify the usefulness of the relationships, stage-cross sectional area and stage velocity formula are also derived. Both hydrologic method using continuity equation and statistical method by the rating curve are compared and checked, then the validation of the both are positively shown.
Flow and bed changes due to tributary inflow variation at the confluence of the Namhan River and the Geumdang Stream were analyzed in this study using a two-dimensional numerical model. As a result of the numerical analysis, the velocity downstream of the confluence was greater than the velocity upstream of the confluence in the main channel regardless of the magnitude of tributary inflow. However, as tributary discharge increased, the channel erosion was accelerated and the dry area was produced at the tributary. Due to the bed erosion at the tributary, sediment transport was increased and the eroded sediments were deposited in the confluence area. The deposition in the confluence area changed the flow direction at the main channel to the left side and the localized flow eroded the channel bed at the left side. Therefore, it is expected that bank failure due to continuous bed degradation is possible in this area.

In this study, the characteristics of river bed profile fluctuation are become possible to be used effectively in future estimation of Taehwa river general development plan through analysis and examination according to the effects of sediment protection weir located in the area of the estuary of Taehwa river's main channel using HEC-6 model. The flow conditions needed in analysis of the characteristics of river bed profile fluctuation refer the conditions of flow which secures 95 days in a year, flood flow, and design flood examined in the estimation of Taehwa river maintenance basic plan. First, in analysis result of river bed variation range, there is no significant variation in upstream section from Samho-gyo while there are the more active erosion and sedimentation as the more flow in downstream from Samho-gyo. Next, from the result of the capacity of sediment transfer, it is analyzed that sediment transfer capacity in the area of estuary of Taehwa river has no significant difference in before and after removal of the sediment protection weir when design flood flows while it is estimated that the more flow, the bigger sediment transfer capacity. Therefore, it is thought that the installation of a suitable hydraulic structure at the lowest point of Dong-chun tributary joins from the downstream of Taehwa river can be a good device to reduce the accumulation of sediments at the lowest point of Taehwa river considering the reduction plan of sediment inflow caused by removal of the sediment protection weir.

Numerical analysis was conducted using Delft3D developed by Deltares in Netherlands to predict long-term river bed changes in Saemangeum Area. Tidal flow, discharge through the drainage gates and river bed changes in numerical model was verified by comparing to the results of field observation and hydraulic experiments. We calculated long-term river bed changes in Saemangeum area for 10 years from 2031 to 2040 after completion of development in Saemangeum. It is shown that 70 cm and 139 cm of accumulation occur in estuaries of Dongjin River and Mankyong River, respectively. Variation of flood level was also investigated considering long-term river bed changes. There was no change in estuary of Dongjin River but maximum flood level in estuary of Mankyong River increased 81 cm.

The sediment transport process in a river reflects the process of geomorphological change in the watershed, influencesthe river bed variation and the river channel migration, and is a parametric phenomenon that exhibits a dynamic self-adjusting process. Sediment load is divided into bedload and suspended load depending on the dominant mechanism. Quantitative sediment load is important information for solving river problems. Because it is difficult and time consuming to measure bedload, compared to that ofsuspended load, data on the sediment transport load and the research required for the gravel-bed rivers are insufficient. This study is to analyze the ratio of the bedload to the total sediment load in gravel-bed rivers. The sediment load ratio in gravel-bed rivers increases with the flow rate per unit width, and the rate of the bedload varies more rapidly than the suspended load. The sediment transport efficiency coefficient has been affected by the ratio of the flow depth to the mean diameter of particles and has been dependent on the shear velocity Reynolds number. So $A^{\ast}$ and $B^{\ast}$ are introduced to compensate for the uncertainties such as bed materials, sediment transport, and flow velocity distribution, and the coefficient of bedload ratio has been presented. For the sediment load data in experimental channels and rivers, A* was 3.1. The dominant variables of $B^{\ast}$ were $u_*d_m/{\nu}$ in the gravel-bed and h/dm in the sand-bed. When $B^{\ast}$ the is the same, in the experimental channels the coefficient of bedload ratio was affected by the bed forms, but in the rivers it was of little difference between the gravel-bed and sand-bed.
