Trends in Mycotoxin Contamination of Cereals and Cereal Products in Korea (국내산 곡류와 곡류 가공품의 곰팡이독소 오염 동향)

  • In this review, the mycotoxin contamination of Korean cereals and their products is analyzed by crop based on scientific publications since 2000. Barley, rice, and corn were investigated heavier than the others. The common mycotoxins occurred in all cereals and their products were deoxynivalenol and zearalenone. Nivalenol was detected in all samples analyzed but more frequently or mainly in barley, rice, and oat. Fumonisin was commonly detected in corn and sorghum but also in adlay, millet, and rice. Adlay and millet were similar in the contamination pattern that fumonisin and zearalenone were the most frequently detected mycotoxins. Zearalenone was the most commonly detected mycotoxin with concentrations higher than the national standards (maximum limit), followed by deoxynivalenol, and aflatoxin. However, most occurrence levels were below the maximum limits for respective mycotoxins. This result shows that barley, rice, corn, sorghum, millet, and adlay are more vulnerable to mycotoxin contamination than other cereals and therefore continuous monitoring and safety management are necessary.

  • Nine hybrid rices crossed between Korean cytoplasmic-genetic male sterile rices having the WA cytoplasm and the Korean restorer lines or varieties, HR1619A/Nampungbyeo, HR1619A/Gayabyeo, HR1619A/Line234, TongilA/Nampungbyeo, TongilA/Cheongcheongbyeo, Suwon 296A/Line 209, Suwon 296A/Line 237, Suwon 296A/Line 252 and Line 201A/Line 234, and their parents were grown at Yeungnam University in 1984. The rough rice yield of the hybrids Line 201A/Line 234, TongilA/Nampungbyeo and HR1619A/Nampungbyeo were 939, 927 and 900 Kg/10a respectively. The heterosis(F$_1$/Midparent) of the above three hybrids was 40%, 20% and 19%, the heterobeltiosis(F$_1$/Better parent) was 36%, 17% and 10%, and the standard heterosis (F$_1$/Standard variety, Cheongcheongbyeo) was 19%, 17% and 14% respectively. The hybrids HR1619A/ Gayabyeo and Suwon 296A/Line 237 showed negative heterosis in grain yield. Significant heterobeltiosis for grain number per panicle was found while less or no heterobeltiosis was observed in panicle number per hill, 1000-grain weight and grain fertility. The bacterial leaf blight disease reaction of the hybrids tested was almost the same as that of one parent at least. The amylose content of the hybrids was medium to low the same as their parents. The protein content and alkali digestion value of the hybrids were almost the same as their parents.

Rice Breeding for the Resistance to the Disease and Insect Pests (수도 병해충에 대한 저항성품종의 육종)

  • Yield losses due to diseases and insect pests were mentioned and emphasized the efficiency of resistant cultivars in curving the yield losses and increasing chemical efficiency. Present status of resistance breeding for blast, bacterial leaf blight viruses, brown planthopper and white backed planthopper were introduced and the resistance sources for those are discussed. Breeding strategies for above items were presented. Specially for the blast resistance, discussions were made in some detail. With brief future prospects of resistance breeding in Korea, a suggestion was made for pathologists to make clear about whether the blast spores will be brought from mainland China as we see with Bph and Wbph or not.

Structure Elucidation of Sesquiterpenoid from Pathogenic Fungus Bipolaris cynodontis (식물 병원균 Bipolaris cynodontis로부터 분리한 세스퀴테르펜류 화합물의 구조 분석)

  • A phytotoxic compound was isolated from a culture of Bipolaris cynodontis, a fungus pathogenic to Bermuda grass. The structure was determined by spectroscopic analyses including 2D NMR experiments, to be sesquiterpene having a 9-carbon unit side chain. The compound inhibits the root growth of the seedlings of Italian ryegrass and rice plant, the host plant of the B. cynodontis, by about 100% at 100ppm, and it is suggested that this may play an important role in the expression of the disease symptom.

Identification of Differentially Expressed Genes by cDNA-AFLP in Magnaporthe oryzae

  • Analysis of differentially expressed genes has assisted discovery of gene sets involved in particular biological processes. The purpose of this study was to identify genes involved in appressorium formation in the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae via analysis of cDNA-amplified fragment length polymorphisms. Amplification of appressorial and vegetative mycelial cDNAs using 28 primer combinations generated over 200 differentially expressed transcript-derived fragments (TDFs). TDFs were excised from gels, re-amplified by PCR, cloned, and sequenced. Forty-four of 52 clones analyzed corresponded to 42 genes. Quantitative real-time PCR showed that expression of 23 genes was up-regulated during appressorium formation, one of which was the MCK1 gene that had been shown to be involved in appressorium formation. This study will be providing valuable resources for identifying the genes such as pathogenicity-related genes in M. oryzae.

  • Folk Remedies symbolize the medical art of the common people, and contain their special emotion and colloquial expressions. They are medical treatments in which the medical history and the tradition and the soul of a people are incorporated. They are handed down in various ways. This study introduces some of folk remedies. For example, powder of tigers' bones heals neuralgia. Rice wine brewing up with ginger is effective in a cold. Water boiling with safflower does good in neuralgia. Pasting herba houttuyniae takes effect in skin disease. To Decoct and drink old hardy orange is effective in urticaria. Water boiling with fructus corni alleviates a fever. Camellia oil or rhizoma cnidii or iris is used for the extermination of vermin and the antiseptic. In the end, the practical application of these remedies to the resources of industry and education will be discussed.

  • The pharmaceutical effects of Korean traditional foods made in ${\ulcorner$Eumsikdimibang${\lrcorner}$ were studied. Eumsikdimibangis a representative ancient book of cooking, which was published in 1653 by Mme. Jang. The type of food in Eumsikdimibang were Guksu(wheat vermicelli as like western noodles) Mandu(bun stuffed with seasoned meat and vegetables), Guk(soup), J'IM(steam meat or fish). Chae, Noorumi, Hyae(sliced raw fish), Jockpyun(jellied beef soup), Jockgall(salted seafood), Kimchi, Juk(skewer or broach) Jhee. Sun(steaming of stuffed vegetable), Bockuem, Jeon(pan fried fish), Gui(meat or fish grilled with seasoning), Dock(Korean rice cake), Jabgwa, Beverage and Junggwa. Each Korean foods has a phamarceutical action; enhancement of physical activity, thirst elimination, detoxication and treatment disease.

  • ;Bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Olyzae is one of the most important diseases of rice. Host resistance, which relies on single, dominant resistance genes, is the only reliable method to control the disease at present. Pathogenic variation of the bacteria has been shown to follow the deployment of resistance genes in commercial cultivars. Information on the factors and the mechanisms for genetic variation of this pathogen is limited. Further, we have no clear evidence of whether population variability is due to sexual recombination or to variation introduced by mutations or intragenic recombination in a clonally maintained population.(omitted)itted)

Dravya: a Putative Organic Treatment against Alternaria padwickii Infection in Paddy

  • In the present study, Dravya-an organic compound used for seed treatment along with the common fungicides to test its compatibility in the management of Alternaria padwickii in paddy. Dravya (a sea weed extract) was found highly compatible with fungicides like Bavistin and Dithane M-45. Incidence of Alternaria padwickii and Bipolaris oryzae was also reduced to a greater extent in the paddy seed samples of Dravya treatment. On the other hand, it also enhanced the seed germination and seedling vigour. Seedlings of treated samples also showed enhanced activity of peroxidase upon challenge inoculation with Alternaria padwickii. The enzyme activity in the seedlings challenged with the pathogen was two fold more over control. The suppression in disease incidence in growing plants indicated the promising effect of Dravya and Dithane M-45 under green- house conditions.
