  • The new national K-12 Information subject curriculum which will be effective in year 2010 includes algorithm and programming sections. Programming languages in K-12 are more effective the Educational Programming Language (EPL) than general language, because it focuses on developing problem solving ability rather than training a programmer. Therefore, it is necessary to study for suitable EPL in Korean K-12 curriculum. In this study, we studied and analyzed various types of EPLs available and strategies to apply them to the new national curriculum. First of all, we chose 26 educational programming languages and analyzed their characteristics and functions. Also, we investigated associations between key factors of the new Information curriculum and each language and suggested a proper language for their students' level. Finally, we considered possible problems and suitability to Korean K-12 students. The result of this study help us to choose what is the proper EPL and to consider applicability and criteria of EPLs.

  • As an emphasis has been put on the importance of computational thinking, universities have opened software educational programs as required basic courses.. Therefore this study aimed to examine non-major students' perceptions of programming before and after they had programing education. To this end, this study performed programming education for 15 weeks using the Scratch programming language, and then conducted a questionnaire survey. This study analyzed responses from 214 students. According to the results of the analysis, 74 % of the non-major students had no previous experience with programming, 87% felt that programming was difficult, and 69.7% answered that they did not need programming education. To change these negative perceptions of programming, this study made the following suggestions. First, the professor should clearly convey the needs, purposes, and content of programming education to students prior to class. Second, programming should be designated as an optional course rather than required one. Third, it is necessary to develop content integrated with majors, or educational programs or content connected to getting a job or starting a business.

  • In current knowledge-based society, development and growth of IT industry is essential for a nation's competitiveness since economic power depends on IT industry in many countries. Thus, it is necessary to identify and foster gifted children in IT as early as possible. The purpose of this paper is to identify if EPL is proper language for testing programming ability of the gifted children in IT. Scratch language is selected as an EPL. For the experiment, gifted children from a gifted institution at some university are selected and their programming test scores are gathered and analyzed. Based on statistical analysis, the conclusion is that Scratch language is not proper for testing programming ability for the gifted children in IT. This result will be helpful for selection examinations, curriculum for gifted education in IT.

  • Computational Thinking is an analytical thinking ability that is necessary for everyone and everywhere. The existing Computational Thinking development education provided in Practical textbooks leads to block-based programming languages from unplugged activities. Many unplugged activities focus on practicing sequential order, which may lack the learning of abstractions or automation concepts. In block-based programming languages, concepts such as coordinate planes, which are not introduced in elementary school curriculum, appear, making students feel burdened by the block-based programming language itself. In this study, a curriculum was designed for elementary student's computational thinking through game-based programming language education. The results and their effectiveness were analyzed through the beaver challenge. As a result of analyzing the pre-test and post-test scores, it was confirmed that students' computational thinking skills improved.

  • Computer education is moving its focus from skill oriented education to improving students' creativity and problem solving ability. Thus, the importance of programming education is being strengthened. However, programming education was biased to grammar oriented language that has been limits of students' interest. Robot programming is problem solving itself, and by allowing students to directly see the robot which is the output of programming, can help interest and motivate to the students. In fact, it is still observed that the students are facing difficulties due to various kinds of errors during the programming education. Therefore, this study categorizes and analyzes the errors students are facing during robot programming, and based on that, a support tool to help treat errors developed. The developed supporting system for error solving reduces the frequency of errors and provides the set of coding instruction, NXC language and error message in Korean, examples and detailed information for each stage of education, function removing major coding errors, and code sorting and indication of row number. This study also confirmed that the supporting tool is helpful in reducing and solving errors after input.

  • Scratch, one of the educational programming languages, provides a media-rich programming environment and easy interface to users. It supports Korean language and is utilized usefully in programming classes in elementary and middle schools. However, programming causes cognitive loads to young students. Because the programming process is a complex problem solving procedure that requires logical and abstract thinking abilities. Therefore, we developed a problem based scratch programming teaching and learning model to enhance intrinsic motivation of learners and to maximize the effects of using the scratch, educational programming language. The developed problem based teaching and learning model considered elementary students' characteristics. It was implemented in fifth grade elementary school classes and the educational effects of the model was analysed. The developed model was helpful in enhancing students' problem solving potential and logical thinking abilities.

  • This paper is proposed to present elementary algorithmic thinking-based Squeak E-toy programming problems for flowchart-based programming educations without programming languages in elementary programming educations. Furthermore, this paper proves the validity and effects of developed Squeak E-toy programming problems through measurement analyses of metacognition and GALT logical thinking ability experiments by comparing with the language-based traditional programming education.

  • To learn a programming language as a text-based programming and a computer language suitable for a wide range, learner thinks it is very difficult. To represent a visual program is one way to solve this problem easily. The visual language such as Visual C++, Visual Basic and Delphi is represented an interface as the visual component and represented a component action as a text-based. The programmer is very difficult about the component action with text-based and dislikes programming. In this paper, so solve these problems, we use the UML for representing a logical thinking and supporting and object-oriented programming. We suggest for programming education method to replace text-based programming to LabVIEW OOP. In addition, we conduct a survey on how programming education and analyze the training effect.

  • Computer programs are required from all areas in society including machine, space, aviation, and medicine. However, the programming curriculum is getting hard despite a lot of teaching materials and video lessons. Programming languages are very diverse, but most of them use the same structure, and they only have different expression methods. Therefore, if one learns one programming language, then it doesn't need to spend a lot of time and efforts to learn another programming langue. Most programming languages use the structure of sequence, selection, and repletion in general. The important thing for programming learners is the structure or algorithm of programming not the grammar of program. This study designed and implemented the language learning system to learn structured programming by using a flowchart.

  • This study aims to suggest app programming education plan by analyzing the effects of app programming education using m-bizmaker on the creative problem solving ability in specialized high school students. Currently, The South Korean government is preparing to conduct SW education in primary and secondary schools. Developing smartphone apps that are familiar to students can be seen as a very effective tool of SW educational measures. In general, app development can only be achieved through specialized training on how to use the app programming language. So, many students think the app programming is difficult areas before creating apps because tired of learning how to an app programming language. As a result of applying app programming education using m-Bizmaker, which is one of the app authoring tools, to the class, it is desirable as an app programming education plan. And according to survey results, it has been proved that the app programming education plan using m-Bizmaker is effective to improve creative problem solving ability.
