The vibrational predissociation of triatomic, i.e., atom-diatom, van der Waals complexes in transient electronic excited state has been widely investigated. The predissociation rates or lifetimes are major concerns of the previous studies. Experimentally rotational state distributions of diatomic product are hardly investigated and few theoretical stuides on rotational state distributions have appeared in literature. In this work, choosing the frequently studied $I_2(B)-Ne$ complex as an example, we investigate the change of rotational state distributions of $I_2(B)-Ne$ produced from predissociation of the various initial states of $I_2(B)-Ne$. The present study on the rotational distributions indicates that rotational state distributions depend significantly on the predissociation energy and the van der Waals vibrational modes of $I_2(B)-Ne$. That is, the initial state dependency of rotational state distributions is extensively discussed.
Golden-rule like formulas have been used without theoretical basis to calculate the resonance lifetimes and final state distributions in the predissociation of van der Waals molecules. Here we present their theoretical basis by extending Fano's configuration interaction theory. Such extensions were independently done by Farnonux [Phys. Rev. 1985, 25, 287] but his work, unfortunately, was not well known outside some small group of people in the field of Auger spectroscopy. Since my extension is easier to understand than his, it is presented here. Theoretical basis of Golden rule like formulas used in the predissociation of van der Waals molecules was obtained by using such extensions. Factors responsible for several aspects of predissociation dynamics, such as variations of dynamics as functions of resonance lifetimes, or variations in shapes of final quantum state distributions of photofragments around resonances, were identified. Parameters, or dynamical information that could be obtained from the measurement of partial cross section spectra were accordingly determined. The theory was applied to the vibrational predissociation of triatomic van der Waals molecules and its result was compared with those calculated by close-coupling method. An example where Golden-rule like expression fails and branching ratios vary greatly around a resonance was considered.
A new theoretical method, named the SCF-DWB-IOS approximation, is suggested to investigate the vibrational predissociation of triatomic van der Waals complexes. The meta stable vibrational excited states are described with SCF (self-consistent-field) approximation and the fragmented diatomic continuum states are determined by using IOS (infinite order sudden) approximation. The dissociation process itself is studied by using DWB (distorted wave Born) approximation. As a test case, the predissociation rates, rotational state distributions of products, and the lifetimes of vibrationally excited states of $Ne-I_2$ are all computed which are in reasonable agreements with other theoretical and/or experimental results. The suggested SCF-DWB-IOS approximation scheme is found to be a very simple but efficient theoretical tool to investigate the vibrational predissociation dynamics of small van der Waals complexes.
When the molecule in the excited state is subject to prompt predissociation, it is quite nontrivial to obtain vibrational structure of the excited state in general. This applies to the case of photochemistry of dimethylamine (DMA:$(CH_3)_2NH$). When DMA is excited to its first electronically excited state ($S_1$), the N-H bond dissociation occurs promptly. Therefore, $S_1$ vibronic bands are homogeneously broadened to give extremely small ionization cross sections and heavily-congested spectral features, making infeasible any reasonable spectral assignment. Here, we demonstrate that the predissociation rate of the excited state could be significantly reduced by the NH/ND substitution to give the much better-resolved $S_1$ spectral feature, revealing the vibrational structure of the excited state of $DMA-d_1$ ($(CH_3)_2ND$) for the first time.

The combined ab initio and vibrational predissociation (VP) spectroscopic studies on methylammonium-$(water)_4$ complex aimed at understanding the hydration behavior of an amphiphilic ion core are described. The ab initio calculations predicted eleven low-energy isomers forming cyclic, tripod, chain, and caged structures, and their relative stabilities, total hydration energies and thermodynamic functions at 298 K and 150 K. The excellent correlation between the observed VP spectra and ab initio spectra for bonded N-H, bonded O-H and free O-H stretches suggested co-existence of five cyclic isomers and two non-cyclic isomers in ion beam at 150 K, consistent with the trends of calculated Gibbs free energies.
Generalized Multichannel Quantum Defect theory (MQDT) was implemented to the vibrational predissociation of triatomic van der Waals molecules in the previous paper [Bull. Korean Chem. Soc, 12, 228 (1991)]. Implementation was limited to the calculation of the scattering matrix. It is now extended to the calculation of the predissociation spectra and the final rotational distribution of the photofragment. The comparison of the results with those obtained by other methods, such as Golden-rule type calculation, infinite order sudden approximation (IOS), and close-coupling method, shows that the implementation is successful despite the fact that transition dipole moments show more energy dependence than other quantum defect parameters. Examination of the short-range channel basis functions shows that they resemble angle-like functions and provide the validity of the IOS approximation. Besides the validity of the latter, only a few angles are found to play the major role in photodissociation. In addition to the implementation of MQDT, more progress in MQDT itself is made and reported here.
Generalized multichannel quantum defect theory [C. H. Greene et al. Phys. Rev., A26, 2441 (1982)] is implemented to the vibrational predissociation of triatomic van der Waals molecules. As this is the first one of such an application, the dependences of the quantum defect parameters on energy and radius are examined carefully. Calculation shows that, in the physically important region, quantum defect parameters remain smoothly varying functions of energy for this system as in atomic applications, thus allowing us very coarse energy mesh calculations for the photodissociation spectra. The choice of adiabatic or diabatic potentials as reference potentials for the calculation of quantum defect parameters as done by Mies and Julienne [J. Chem. Phys., 80, 2526 (1984)] can not be used for this system. Physically motivated reference potentials that may be generally applicable to all kinds of systems are utilized instead. In principle, implementation can be done to any other predissociation processes with the same method.
We compare the relative usefulness of common basis functions and numerical integration methods in representing complex resonance state encountered in the molecular scattering problem of aluminum dimer electronic predissociation. Specifically, the basis set size and computing CPU times are monitored in order to find the minimum requirement for ensuring the modest accuracy of calculated resonance energies (0.1 $cm^{-1}$) for more than 100 resonance states. The combination of the so-called one-dimensional box eigenfunctions and energy-dependent boundary functions are found to be most efficient if integration is done using the basis set quadrature rules.
The predissociating resonances are treated for the SH molecule by quantal method. The isolated resonances (N'=0, v' = 0-6) are predicted to be highly Lorentzian. The widths and positions of the isolated resonances are computed as functions of v'. The magnitudes and signs of the widths and the shifts as functions of v' are discussed in terms of the distance of the resonance from the crossing points between the bound state (A 2Σ+ ) and the repulsive states ( 4Σ- , 2Σ- and 4Π).
The computationally simple quantum mechanical method (VSCF-DWB-IOS) has been applied to studying the Ar-$CO_2$ vibrational predissociation phenomenon. The new methodology utilizes the vibrational self-consistent field method to determine the vibrational structure of the van der Waals complex, the distorted-wave Born approximation for dissociating process, and the infinite-order sudden approximation for the continuum dissociating product of $CO_2$. The dissociation due to the coupling of the symmetric stretching vibrational motion of $CO_2$ with the motion of the Ar van der Waals mode has been extensively investigated. The lifetimes of transient excited vibrational states, linewidths of absorption peak, and the rotational state distributions of the product, $CO_2$ have been computed. It has been found that the lifetime of the Ar-$CO_2$ in excited vibrational state is very long compared with that of triatomic van der Waals complexes and the product $CO_2$ carries a major portion of dissociation energy as a rotational energy.
