  • Water-soaked spots or lesions were observed on fruits or stems of melon plants at house-melon farms in Andong, Korea. The symptoms developed to soft rot of the fruits of wilting of the whole plants. The causal organism isolated from the water-soaked le-sions was identified as Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora based on the morphological and physiological characteristics. The causal bacterium was susceptible to not only two kinds of medical antibiotics but also two kinds of agrochemicals tested. Since the bacterial soft rot is a first described bacterial disease in melon in Korea, we propose to name the disease as "bacterial soft rot of melon".

  • We report an unrecorded species of Patrinia in Korea, P. monandra C. B. Clarke. This species was found from Neasosa, Buan-gun, Prov. Jeollabuk-do, Sanghwangbong and Bogildo, Wando-gun, Prov. Jeollanam-do in the southwest of Korea. We named 'Gin-dook-gal' as a common name of this species. It is easily distinguishable from Patrlnia villosa (Thunb.) Juss. by the characteristics such as lemon yellow corolla, one (sometimes three) stamen(s) and fruit fused with large bracteole-wing orbiculate.

  • The somatic chromosome numbers among the various taxonomic characters about 17 taxa in Korean Aster and its allied taxa were investigated to review accurate scientific name and taxonomic rank. The somatic chromosome numbers of the treated taxa were invariable in same taxa, but variable among different taxa. The treated taxa were divided into two types by basic chromosome numbers, one type was x=9, the other x=8 and x=9 type was subdivided by polyploidy. The somatic chromosome numbers of Aster altaicus var. uchiymae, A. hyatae, Kalimeris chejuensis were reported firstly in this study, and based upon somatic chromosome numbers and leaf morphology, the plants, idenified as Aster pinnatifidus in Korea was considered variant of Kalimeris incisa.

  • A new variety of Elsholtzia splendens (Lamiaceae) was found by the roadside of a mountain base at Jungmun-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do. The new taxon is termed Elsholtzia splendens var. fasciflora N.S. Lee, M.S. Chung & C.S. Lee, var. nov. The Korean name 'Da-bal-kkot-hyang-yu' was given. The morphological characters and illustrations of the species based on the holotype are provided together with a photograph of the habitat. It is distinctly distinguished from Elsholtzia splendens var. splendens by a few characteristics: leaves that area 2-4 cm long, leaves beneath the inflorescence, typically mostly 4; and inflorescence mosyly 2-4, fascicled, involucres oval.

  • During the systematic study of the genus Bidens L. (Asteraceae) in Korea, we found two specimens collected from Bujeon Plateau, Hamgyungnam-do, which are recognized as a new taxon (B. radiata Thill. var. radiata) for the flora of Korea. The Korean name for this taxon is newly designated as 'Sam-ip-gu-wa-ga-mak-sa-ri'. The close relative of this taxon is B. radiata Thill. var. pinnatifida (Turcz. ex DC.) Kitam., but B. radiata var. radiata can be distinguished from B. radiata var. pinnatifida by having mostly 3-parted and lanceolate lobe of leaf. The key for varieties of B. radiata is given.

  • We confirmed an unrecorded taxon under the genus Gentianopsis (Gentianaceae) into Gentianopsis contorta (Royle) Ma, which was collected from Geumdaebong, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do in the central part of Korean peninsula. This taxon was known to be distributed mainly Himalayan mountainous area such as India, Nepal and Pakistan, and also growing in China and Japan. In this study, we carried out species description based on the morphological characters, and gave the new Korean name, 'Kko-in-yong-dam' by the characteristics of floral morphology. In addition, some fine figures on several important characters and key to the this and relative species were provided.

  • We reviewed the taxonomic identity and morphological characteristics of Cardamine manshurica (Kom.) Nakai based on its original description and type specimens. Cardamine manshurica, with its smaller flowers and siliques and earlier flowering season, is distinguished from the closely related species C. flexuosa With. This species-level difference is additionally supported in a phylogenetic tree constructed using nrDNA ITS sequences. Taken together, we therefore propose that C. manshurica is a distinct species. The scientific name 'Cardamine manshurica (Kom.) Nakai' is accepted.

  • The taxonomic entity and morphological characteristics of Impatiens furcillata were reviewed based on the original description and the type specimen. As a result, I. furcillata, by having glabrous stems, descending and glabrous peduncles, and pinkish white flowers, is strikingly distinguishable from other taxa of Korean Impatiens. Both I. hypophylla var. koreana and I. kojeensis are treated as synonyms of I. furcillata, for their morphological characteristics, were the same as those of I. furcillata. In addition, the Korean name for I. furcillata was changed to 'Cheo-jin-mul-bong-seon' instead of 'San-mul-bong-seon'.
