  • SIP(Soil cement Injected Precast pile) that inserts a precast pile after injecting a cement paste into a boring has been applied rapidly through the change of construction circumstances. But there isnt any logical equation of a bearing capacity fitted to SIP yet. So Meyerhof equation has mainly been used to predict a bearing capacity in a design stage instead. But it has shortcomings such as lack of confidence because it has derived not from a theory but from an experience obtained from the result of SPT (Standard Penetration Test) and because a penetration depth tends to be deeper by an excessive design that depends on an end bearing capacity of a pile more than a skin frictional resistance. In this study, thereupon, a direct shear test in the laboratory was performed to both SM and SC soils in variable conditions to verify skin friction properties for the purpose of presenting some reasons capable of reducing penetration depths. Through the tests, soil to soil of SM in cohesion, rough panel to soil of SM in friction angle and soil to soil of SM in shear strength tended to be high. And a shear strength increased as its total unit weight increased in all cases.

  • This paper presents the results of a two-dimensional finite element analysis of end bearing capacity of single pile installed in fractured rock mass. A number of cases were analyzed using Hoek-Brown criterion that can consider the condition of rock joints. Considering a wide range of joint conditions in which the pile is embedded into the rock, GSI was set as a main parameter. And the effects of pile diameter, unconfined compressive strength of rock and Hoek-Brown constant $m_0$ were considered. Based on parameter study, end bearing load factor graphs were suggested.

  • Due to the advantageous mechanical properties of the fiber reinforced polymeric plastics(FRP), their application in the construction industries is ever increasing trend, as a substitute of structural steel which is highly vulnerable under hazardous environmental conditions (i.e., corrosion, humidity, etc.). In this study, hybrid FRP-concrete composite pile (HCFFT) connection is suggested. The HCFFT is consisted of pultruded FRP unit module, filament wound FRP which is in the outside of mandrel composed of circular shaped assembly of pultruded FRP unit modules, and concrete which is casted inside of the circular tube shaped hybrid FRP pile. Therefore, pultruded FRP can increase the flexural load carrying capacity, filament wound FRP and concrete filled inside can increase axial load carrying capacity. In the study, connection capacity of HCFFT(small and mid size) is investigated throughout experiments and finite element method. From the results of experiments, we suggested the connection methods about HCFFT pile connection.

  • This paper introduces a new method of improvement for marine soft ground, MLPP (Marine large Pack Pile). The MLPP is a reinforcement technique far the conventional SCP or GCP piles by confining them with geotextile pack. A pilot project at Busan New Port site and laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the settlement reduction and bearing capacity enhancement effect of pack pile. The results of field and laboratory tests show that MLPP method can be a safe and economic alternative method for SCP and GCP.

  • There has been growing agreement that geotechnical reliability-based design (RBD) is necessary for establishing more advanced and integrated design system. In this study, resistance factors for LRFD pile design using CPT results were investigated for axially loaded driven piles. In order to address variability in design methodology, different CPT-based methods and load-settlement criteria, popular in practice, were selected and used for evaluation of resistance factors. A total of 32 data sets from 13 test sites were collected from the literature. In order to maintain the statistical consistency of the data sets, the characteristic pile load capacity was introduced in reliability analysis and evaluation of resistance factors. It was found that values of resistance factors considerably differ for different design methods, load-settlement criteria, and load capacity components. For the total resistance, resistance factors for LCPC method were higher than others, while those for Aoki-Velloso's and Philipponnat's methods were in similar ranges. In respect to load-settlement criteria, 0.1B and Chin's criteria produced higher resistance factors than DeBeer's and Davisson's criteria. Resistance factors for the base and shaft resistances were also presented and analyzed.

  • The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter, pile distance and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 73% larger than that of the steel pipe pile and about 14% larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 51% of that of the steel pile and about 19% of that of the concrete pile.

  • Although sand compaction pile is applied considerably for increase of hearing capacity in domestic, it is getting more necessary to develope the alternative materials because of exhaustion and increase of unit cost of sand. In this study, stress concentration ratio between crushed-stone pile and soft ground was measured and, a displacement ratio 30, 40 and 50%, variation of stress concentration ratio was analyzed. As an increase displacement ratio, the stress concentration effect of crushed-stone compaction pile doesn't increase proportionally and effect of ground improvement in case of ground was good at displacement ratio 30% or 40%. The stress concentration ratio of crushed-stone compaction pile in group piles is 1.5 times that of crushed-stone compaction pile in single pile.

  • This paper presents the utilization of waste concrete as vertical drain material. The materials used as vertical drain material were the waste concrete, obtained from the demolished apartments or concrete structure and sand. In this study, laboratory model test was performed to investigate settlement and bearing capacity between sand compaction pile and waste concrete compaction pile. The results of laboratory model test showed that the improvement efficiency of soft ground by waste concrete compaction pile was better than sand compaction pile.

  • This paper describes the results of bearing capacity using field loading test of pile, in order to extend the applicability of drilled shaft with mid-size, and the results were compared with the prediction results of design bearing capacity by empirical formular. The static load test result showed that the allowable bearing capacity of high pile strength was about 2.4 times higher than that of low pile strength. The dynamic load test result showed that the allowable bearing capacity of high pile strength was about 1.4 times~1.5 times higher than that of low pile strength. The comparison result of allowable bearing capacity between static and dynamic load test showed that the difference of allowable load ranged from 3% to 6% under the same settlement conditions. As a result of comparing the ultimate bearing capacity by load test and design bearing capacity, it was found that the FHWA proposed equation could be more reasonable than the other proposed equation in load sharing ratios of end bearing and skin friction.

  • This paper presents the pullout behavior of suction pile using finite difference method; and the commercial software, FLAC3D, was employed for the numerical analyses. The ultimate pullout capacity of suction pile was predicted using conventional equations, and the results were compared with the results from numerical analyses with varying pile diameter, pile length, and the undrained shear strength of clays. Based on the results from 24 analyses, it was found that the failure pattern depends not only on the drainage condition of suction pile, but also on the pile dimensions and the material properties of surrounding soils. The developed side shear (DSS) along the internal surface of the suction pile was collected from numerical analyses, which was used to classify the failure type between sliding failure and tensile failure. Regardless of the external DSS, the high internal DSS tends to result in sliding failure in the numerical analyses, which conforms well to the estimation from conventional equations.
