This study explored types and characteristics of South Korean crossover picturebooks that are enjoyed across generations. Participants included three publishers, six critics, six illustrators and three picturebook researchers, and focused on 92 South Korean recommended picturebooks published from 1995 to 2014 as the research material for this study. The majority of Korean crossover picturebook type was story, followed by information and art. There were few wordless books. Common themes of the story picturebooks were contemplation, traditional culture, social changes (such as immigration and redevelopment), reminiscence, social relations, loss and death, family problems, and social incidents. Classic essays and novels were revised for picturebooks as were famous poems originally written for grown-ups. Informational books were about traditions in music, architecture, furniture and special occasions like wedding and ceremonies. The style of the drawings were precise and realistic. Some drawings were done by brush and Chinese ink on hanji (traditional Korean paper) or silk. Some books featured Korean calligraphy as well, enabling adult readers to also appreciate the beauty and delicacy of the books. Art books and wordless books were quite rare and exhibited a playful tone. Adults alone were not presumed to be the primary reading audience of the picture books. Implications were made for picturebook marketing in a society such as South Korea, where the elderly population is rapidly increasing. Various forms of art books and parodies were also welcome. One conclusion of the study was that more experimental and innovative works would be encouraging for the development of South Korean crossover picturebooks.

본 연구는 인간 발달의 서사 모델에 따라 그림책 읽기가 성인 독자에게 자신의 어린 시절 놀이 경험을 회상하는 데 도움을 주는지, 그렇다면 회상된 놀이의 유형과 내용은 어떠한지를 탐색하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해 성인 독자에게 놀이를 소재로 한 그림책을 제시하고 그림책을 읽기 전후로 회상한 놀이경험과 그림책에 대한 반응을 인터뷰를 통해 수집하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그림책을 읽기 전에 성인들이 회상한 놀이는 주로 '규칙이 있는 게임'이었으며 야외에서 이루어진 동적인 놀이였다. 그러나 그림책을 읽은 후 대부분의 성인 독자들은 읽기 전과는 유형이 다른 유년기의 놀이를 회상하였다. 둘째, 놀이를 소재로 한 그림책을 읽기 전 성인들은 여러 놀이를 파편화된 상태로 회상하거나 한 개의 놀이 행위의 명칭만을 회상하였다. 그러나 그림책을 읽고 난 후의 놀이 회상에서는 서사의 요소인 등장인물, 배경, 플롯이 구체적으로 나타났다. 셋째, 독자들은 놀이를 소재로 한 그림책에 대하여 대체적으로 정서적 반응 또는 미학적 반응을 보였다. 본 연구의 결과는 그림책이 유아부터 노인까지 전 연령이 향유할 수 있는 예술 장르이자 도서임을 확인하며 성인 독자가 유년기를 회상하며 자신을 재발견하도록 도와줄 수 있는 매체임을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze 5'year' old children's responses in the process of reading picturebooks on sexual abuse and to explore the educational implications of the results. 42'five year' old children and 2 of their teachers participated as subjects in the study. Data was collected by means of observation, a diary record of the teacher's class, and an interview with teachers about children's responses in the process of reading picturebooks on sexual abuse during the free choice activities, and group activities in J and K daycare centers in Busan, Korea from July to September. The results were as follows : the analysis identified three patterns of responses; consistent responses, awkward responses, and confused and frightened responses. These result imply that selecting picturebooks for sexual abuse preventive education programs for young children needs to be given careful consideration. The importance of the teacher's reading skills and sociocultural cognition regarding sexuality in general were also discussed.

본 연구에서는 그림책 면지의 중요성에 주목하고, 2022년 현재까지 볼로냐 라가치상을 수상한 한국 그림책 25권의 면지 유형을 세 가지 기준('앞뒤면지 동일성', '미술 유형', '콘텐츠 유형')을 사용하여 분석했다. 분석한 결과, 앞뒤면지가 서로 상이한 그림책이 약간 더 많았고, 면지의 미술 유형은 삽화, 패턴, 단색 순으로 나타났으며, 콘텐츠 유형으로는 페리텍스트가 가장 많이 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 볼로냐 라가치상을 수상한 한국 그림책의 면지가 서사와 관련된 콘텐츠를 포함하는 경우가 많음을 보여주는 것으로, 그림책 읽기 활동에서 면지의 심미적, 서사적 역할에 주의를 기울일 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

본 연구에서는 존 버닝햄의 그림책 2권(『셜리야, 물가에 가지 마!』, 『셜리야, 목욕은 이제 그만!』)을 Bakhtin의 대화주의 이론 중 카니발의 개념을 이용하여 분석했다. 존 버닝햄의 그림책에서는 주인공 '셜리'의 일탈에 대한 무의식적인 소망이 기상천외한 상상세계에서의 모험으로 전환되어 웃음이 곁들여진 축제와 같은 사건으로 묘사되고 있다. 그림책을 통해서 유아들은 현실에서 금지된 행동을 상상세계에서의 사건으로 전환 시켜 간접적으로 체험하면서 만족한다. 이러한 간접 경험은 유아가 현실에서의 불만을 자연스럽게 해소하면서 자기만의 독창적인 내적 발달을 하는데 매우 중요하다. 본 연구는 가정이나 유아교육기관에서 유아들에게 다양한 그림책을 쉽게 접할 수 있는 환경을 제공하는 것이 그들의 성장에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다는 것도 또한 시사하고 있다.

This case study describes the nature of young children's responses in the informational picturebook reading process through the eyes of 4 young children. Over a twenty week period from September 3, 2007 to February 15, 2008, researcher observed 4 young children while they read informational picturebooks and interacted with one another in terms of what they had read. The young children's personalities, preferences and environments as individual background clearly influenced responses and interaction during the reading process. By acknowledging the response styles of young children, a teacher can assist young children in developing a repertoire of responses to informational picturebooks.

그림책의 교육적 활용 가치와 페리텍스트의 서사적 중요성에 대한 학문적 관심이 증가하면서 그림책 분석 시 사용되는 페리텍스트 구성 요소에 대한 체계적인 고찰이 요구되는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 그림책 페리텍스트를 분석한 11편의 선행연구에서 사용한 페리텍스트 구성 요소를 고찰한 후, 네 가지('기본적 정보', '물리적 요소', '위치적 요소', '콘텐츠 요소')로 범주화하여 분석틀을 제안했다. 첫 번째 범주는 '기본적 정보'로 '제목', '작가명', '출판 정보', '수상 정보', '헌사/감사의 말', '추천사' 등이 포함되며, 두 번째 범주는 '물리적 요소'로 '판형', '제본', '재질' 등이 포함된다. 세 번째 범주는 '위치적 요소'로 '표지(앞표지, 뒤표지, 책등)', '면지', '표제지', '간기면', '덧싸개 및 띠지' 등이 포함되며, 네 번째 범주는 '콘텐츠 요소'로 '글', '그림', '타이포그래피', '레이아웃', '페이지 형태' 등이 포함된다. 본 연구결과를 통해 다양한 그림책의 페리텍스트 분석 및 활용 연구가 활성화될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Subjects were 88 two-year-old-toddlers(25-36 months of age) and 32 teachers in 13 childcare centers; they were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. The researcher observed teacher-toddler interaction in the picturebook reading situation. Analysis of patterns of teachers' verbal behavior and coding of toddlers' verbal and nonverbal behaviors were based on Senechal, et al.(1995) and Whitehurst, et al.(1988), respectively. In comparison with the control group, toddlers of the experimental group showed significant differences in verbal behavior; they acquired nouns occurring in the picturebooks and more expressive and comprehensive language. After training intervention, teachers of the experimental group showed changes in quality and quantity of verbal behavior.

This study has examined, first of all, one of unique characteristics of picturebook, so-called dual audience. To be more exact, this paper aimed at exploring the flexibility of picturebooks that allows both of children and adult reader to enjoy them. For this, we analysed Piggybook by Anthony Browne that so far has been read as a traditional picturebook with a single distinctive narrative rather than as a postmodern picturebook with multiple narratives, centering on paradox and irony. The results of this study were as fallows: Piggybook has the potential of multiple readings and meanings for a variety of audiences. Above all, this picturebook raises not only the question about the gender roles but also the one about representation of reality through the language.

본 논문은 중학생들을 대상으로 한 방과후학교 그림책 창작 프로그램에 관한 현상학적 연구이다. 본 연구는 그림책 창작활동을 통한 자기내면 발견과 치유의 과정을 분석함으로써 그림책 창작활동의 이론적 체계를 확립하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구참여자는 6명의 중학생이며 그림책 창작 프로그램을 5단계 설계로 구성 적용하였고 연구참여자들의 심층 인터뷰와 자기 그림책 해석에 대한 내용을 서술하였다. 연구결과에 의하면 첫째, 그림책 창작은 자기의 원본보다 더 초과적인 하이퍼 리얼리티(hyper-reality)를 통한 자기 세계를 구성할 수 있다. 둘째, 괴물이라는 두려운 존재는 낯설게 하기(defamiliarization)를 통해 자신의 문제를 다양한 각도에서 견지할 수 있으며 의식의 고양과 통찰력을 키웠다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 그림책 창작이 자신의 존재를 이 세상에 드러내는 하나의 방식이고 이를 통해 자기와 일상생활의 의미를 탐구하고 구성하는 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구 결과의 근거로 그림책 창작 활동이 원본과는 다른 또 다른 세계의 창조, 낯설게 하기 장치를 통한 잠재적 의식의 자극효과와 그림책 창작의 자기존재 정립에 대해 논의하였다.
