The propose of this study was to quantify the changes of soft tissue profile following orthodontic treatment and to evaluate the relationship of those to the skeletal elements. Pre-and post-treatment lateral cephalometric head films of 40 cases(20 extraction cases, 20 non-extraction cases) were traced, and the changes following treatment were measured and quantified by digital subtraction method, and statisticall analyzed. The obtained results were as follows; 1. in extraction group, the change of upper lip area(UL) was $558.60\pm355.17$ pixels, that of lower lip area(LL) was $941.15\pm364.07$ pixels. But, in non-extraction group the change of uper lip area(UL) was $125.65\pm404.16$ pixels, that of lower lip area(LL) was $104.05\pm440.93$ pixels, which was significantly lesser than those in extraction group. 2. In extraction group, there was significant correlationship between upper lip area change(UL) and difference of upper incisor point(${\Delta}UIP$). Lower lip area change(LL) was significantly correlated with difference of upper incisor(${\Delta}UIP$), difference of Franlrfort upper incisor angle(${\Delta}FUIA$) or difference of interincisal angle(${\Delta}IIA$). 3. In extraction group, the ratio of difference of upper incisor point(${\Delta}UIP$) to difference of labrale superius(${\Delta}LSP$) was 1.68; difference of lower incisor point(${\Delta}LIP$) to difference of labrale inferius(${\Delta}LI$) was 1.19; difference of upper incisor point(${\Delta}UIP$) to increment in upper lip thickness(${\Delta}TUL$) was 1.95. 4. In non-extraction group, there was a significant correlationship between upper lip area change(UL) and difference of upper incisor point(${\Delta}UIP$).
This study was conducted to discern differences of craniofacial, dentoalveolar structure and model measurements between sex and between class n openbite group and non-openbite group. The sample consisted of 49 adult patients with class Il malocclusion. 24 linear measurements, 22 angular measurements and 12 ratios were selected in lateral cephalometry. Also, arch width, length, anterior crowding, average molar relation were measured or calculated in diagnostic model. The data were evaluated by t-test and multiple discriminant analysis. The results were as follows, 1. Most linear measurements, with the exception of MnBL and AUDH, were significantly larger in male(p<0.05). but, intermaxillary relations and spatial position of maxilla and mandible relative to cranial base were not different for both sex. 2. With the exception of upper and lower anterior crowding, lower arch width, upper arch length, AMR, male exhibited significantly larger measurements in model analysis (p<0.05). 3. Size differences of maxilla and mandible between openbite and non-openbite group were not significant(p>0.05). but openbite group showed significantly increased genial angle(p<0.05), FH-CoGo(p<0.01), FH-NA(p<0.01) and FH-NB, FH-NPog (p<0.05). 4. ALFH and PUDH were larger(p<0.05) in openbite group. this result served as compensation for the spatial position of mandible relative to cranial base. AUPUDH (p<0.001) and ALPLDH(p<0.05) were lower in openbite group. upper anterior crowding was the only measurement which showed difference between openbite and non-openbite group(p<0.05). 5. For the purpose of classifying adult class n openbite and non-openbite group, multiple discriminant analysis was done genial angle, ALPLDH, AUPUDH, FH-NA were included in multiple discriminant equation. 39 cases($92.86\%$) were correctly classified when applied to the sample used in this study.
This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of oxygen tension on the activity and function of the cells derived from human periodontal ligament by measuring cell activity, total protein synthesis, collagen synthesis, $IL-1{\beta},\;IL-6,\;TNF-{\alpha}$ Human periodontal ligament fibroblasts were collected from premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment and incubated in the environment of $37^{\circ}C,\;5\%\;CO_2,\100\%$ humidity. After the fifth to sixth passage they were used for the experiment. Gaspack system to which $0.2{\mu}m$ Millipore filter was attached was connected to mixed-gas tanks. The mixed gases were composed of $10\%\;O_2,\;5\%\;CO_2,\;85\%\;N_2$ in hyoxic group or $90\%\;O_2,\;5\%\;CO_2,\;5\%\;N_2$ in hyperoxic group and $5\%\;CO_2,\;95\%$ air for control. After incubation in $37^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, 6 days, cell activity was determined by tetrazolium(MTT) assay and total protein synthesis was assayed using sulforhodamine B(SRB). And measurement of 4-hydroxyproline was performed to assess collagen synthesis md $IL-1{\beta},\;IL-6,\;and\;TNF-{\alpha}$ were measured by enzymeimmunoassay. The results were as follows. 1. The cell activity and total protein synthesis in hypoxic group were a little higher than or almost the same with those in control group. 2. In hyperoxic group, the cell activity was lower than that in control group and total protein synthesis was decreased. 3. Collagen synthesis was significantly decreased initially in both hypoxic and hyperoxic group and increased nearly to the level of control group as the duration of cell incubation was longer 4. As a result of enzymeimmunoassay, the amount of cytokines was $IL-6,\;TNF-{\alpha}\;and\;IL-1{\beta}$ in order. 5. $IL-6,\;TNF-{\alpha}\;and\;IL-1{\beta}$ were increased more rapidly in both hypoxic and hyperoxic group than in control group as the duration of cell incubation was longer. 6. There were more $IL-6\;and\;TNF-{\alpha}$ in hyperoxic group than in control group after 6 days, and there were more $IL-6\;and\;TNF-{\alpha}$ after 6 days than after 2 or 4 days in hyperoxic group. These results suggested that oxygen tension might modulate the production of extracellular matrix and cytokines in the cells derived from human periodontal ligament.
This study was conducted to evaluate the tensile bond strength by bonding the dental bracket with Super-bond after treating the surface of dental Nickel-Chromium alloy with sandblasting, sandblasting & tin-plating, respectively, and tin-plating. 10 pieces of Nickel-Chromium alloys with brackets bonded with Super-bond without their surface treatment were sampled as a control group, 20 pieces of Nickel-Chromium alloy brackets bonded with Super-bond after treating them with sandblasting as group I, 20 pieces of Nickel-Chromium alloys tin-plated and bonded with Super-bond after sandblasting as group II, and then 20 pieces of alloys with brackets bonded with Super-bond after tin-plating as group III. The result of those examination and comparison is summarized as follows: 1. Group I showed the mean tensile bond strength of $14.41{\pm}2.24MPa$ which was highest among 4 groups, followed by group III($13.59{\pm}.51MPa$), group II($12.27{\pm}.45MPa$), and control group($10.50{\pm}1.57MPa$), respectively. However, it was shown that there was no statistically significant difference between group I and III, group III and II, and group II and control group(p>0.05). 2. The main failure pattern of those brackets showed that $70\%$ of the control group had an adhesive failure at the bracket-Superbond interface, and $30\%$ at the Nickel-Chromium alloy-Superbond interface, while other groups did the adhesive failure at the bracket-Superbond interface. 3. When examined under SEM, it was shown that adhesives were mostly attached to the surface of the Nickel-Chromium alloy for all groups while a considerable quantity of adhesives were attached to the bracket base. Then, those samples treated only with sandblasting showed the most even and remarkable roughness of their surface.
The purpose of this study was to measure maximum bite force and to investigate its relationship with anteroposterior, vertical, and transverse facial skeletal measurements. From among the dental students at the College of Dentistry, forty subjects (26 male and 14 female) were selected. With two sets of strain gauge, maximum bite force at the right and left first molars and anterior teeth was measured in the morning and afternoon. After taking lateral and posteroanterior cephalograms, fifty and nineteen variables were evaluated, respectively Paired t-tests and an independent t-test were done and correlation coefficients were obtained. 1. The maximum bite force at the first molars was $68.0\pm13.9kg$. in males and $55.6\pm10.5kg$ in females (p<0.05) while the force at the anterior teeth was $8.4\pm4.9kg\;and\;1.1\pm3.4kg$ respectively (p<0.05). 2. Some tendency for a greater value of maximum bite force at the preferred side was observed but not statistically significant (p>0.05). 3. Significant difference was observed between the strong bite force group and the weak bite force group in some cephalometric and other measurements (p<0.05). N-S-Ar, S-Ar-Go, FH-Hl, IMPA and MMO showed a significant difference in posterior maximum bite force (P). N-S-Ar and FH-H1 also showed a significant difference in anterior maximum bite force (A). 4. Several cephalometric variables showed some correlation with maximum bite force (p<0.05). N-S-Ar, S-Ar-Go, UGA, FH-H6, FH-H1, body weight and MMO were significantly correlated with posterior maximum bite force (P). Go-Me, P-1 and IMPA were significantly correlated with anterior maximum bite force (A).
This study was performed to evaluate clinical practicality of the rebonding method with flowable resin without the removal of the residual resin on the debonded theeth and debonded bracket base after debonding. The samples of the control group (group I) were rebonded with Transbond XT using the usual rebonding method after the residual resin was removed. At experimental group, the brackets were rebonded with Transbond XT(group II) and CharmFil Flow (group III) without removal of residual resin which is the possibility becoming the index (or rebonding to similar position With initial bonding. The Shear bond Strength of the each group was measured. Patterns of bonding failure were evaluated with modified ARI score. and the shear bond strength according to patterns of bonding failure at experimental group was compared. Between the control group $(6.51\pm1.21MPa)$ and the group II rebonded with Transbond XT $(6.30\pm1.01MPa)$ did not have significantly difference in the shear bond strength (p=0.534), and the shear bond strength of group II was Significantly lower 4han the group III rebonded With CharmFil Flow $(7.29\pm1.54 MPa)$ (P=0.009). At control group, there was not large difference if distribution of bending failure pattern. But at experimental group, bond failure did not occur in interface between the resin-enamel. and bond failure between the resin-bracket, within the resin was distributed similarly. There was not significantly difference in the shear bond strength according to patterns of bonding failure at experimental group (P>0.05) The result of this study showed that the method suggested in this study aid flowable resin as rebonding adhesive could be useful in clinically.
The evaluation of malocclusion has to be done quantitatively and qualitatively. This will be lead toward an analysis of malocclusion severity as well as treatment difficulty. The method of proper evaluation of malocclusion severity and treatment difficulty is necessary to assess treatment effect and efficiency for the orthodontists and to establish fundamentals for planning and executing the health-related policies in private and public institutions. The purposes of this study as the first part of the objective and quantitative analysis of malocclusion were 1) to measure treatment difficulty based on the opinions of several orthodontists. and 2) to investigate the relationships between objective malocclusion severity and subjective treatment difficulty 100 pairs of dental casts that had various types and severity of malocclusion were selected from the orthodontic departments of Kyurghee University and Samsung Medical Center The objective malocclusion severity was measured with the PAR (Peer Assessment Rating) index and the subjective treatment difficulty was evaluated by 8 experienced orthodontists. The relationships between objective malocclusion severity and subjective treatment difficulty were statistically evaluated. There were significant relationships between objective malocclusion severity and subjective treatment difficulty especially in the measurements of the upper anterior alignment, the buccal occlusion. the overjet, the overbite and the midline discrepancy en the malocclusion components. The results of this study can provide the background knowledge to develop a new occlusal index. which contains both the malocclusion severity and treatment difficulty for Korean orthodontists.
As one of the variations in growth and development of the craniofacial complex. malocclusion shows lack of concordance In the recognition and severity of malocclusion for dentists as well as the acceptance and need of orthodontic treatment for the patient The purposes of this study were 1) to examine the relationships between objective malocclusion severity aid subjective treatment difficulty. 2) to evaluate the effect of malocclusion components to the subjective perceived difficulty of treatment. 3) to establish the weighted values of malocclusion components to reflect the treatment difficulty 100 pairs of dental casts with the general characteristics of malocclusion. were selected from the orthodontic departments of Kyunghee University and Samsuug Medical Center. The severity of malocclusion was evaluated by the author with the PAR index The perceived treatment difficulty and the estimated treatment duration on these dental models were evaluated by 8 experienced orthodontists. The relationships between the objective malocclusion severity and the subjective treatment difficulty were statistically evaluated. and the weighted values of malocclusion components to reflect treatment difficulty were statistically formulated. There were significant relationships between objective malocclusion severity and subjective treatment difficulty The malocclusion components which significantly affected the treatment difficulty and their weighted values in parentheses were as follows upper anterior alignment(1). overbite (2). buccal occlusion (3) middline (4), and overjet (5). This study Provides the fundamental principle to evaluate the objective malocclusion severity which is reflected by the subjective treatment difficulty of Korean orthodontists.
The perception of facial esthetics is critically important to orthodontists. A viewpoint to facial esthetics is influenced by various factors and dependent on the perception of observer. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences regarding esthetic viewpoints among orthodontists, to identify attractive profiles preferred to orthodontists and to present the characteristic aspects of attractive profiles upon the degree of facial convexity. 35 persons whose faces were judged as attractive one by S orthodontists were selected out of 133 young Korean women. Soft tissue profiles Identified as a good-profile group were measured and analyzed. And then according to the facial convexity, good-profile group was subdivided to convex (G-Sn-Pg$9^{\circ}$) and straight (G-Sn-Pg<$9^{\circ}$) groups for the purpose of this study. There were statistically no significant differences regarding esthetic viewpoints among S orthodontists(p<0.05), even if there exists prevailing concept that the standard for facial esthetics is substantially subjective. N-Pg-Sn and N-Pg-Pn, measured for determining anteroposterior relationship of midfacial convexity, showed significant differences statistically between 2 subgroups (P
The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of sodium fluoride on the bony repair and regeneration processes after the rapid palatal expansion in the growing dogs. Eighteen dogs were divided into experimental and control groups. They were in the late mixed dentition. The rapid Palatal expansion was undertaken in all the animals($180^{\circ}$ turn/day) for ten days. The animals were sacrificed on 0, 15 and 45 days after the finish of expansion. One mg NaF/kg of body weight/day were given orally to the experimental group. Blood samples were drawn before and after expansion and the se겨m calcium, phosphate and alkaline phosphatase level were measured. The undecalcified bone section of midpalatal suture area was made, and observed under the light microscopy The results were as follows ; 1. The day after expansion, the infiltration of inflammatory cells were prominent and the new bone formation started at the edges of the two palatal plates bodering the midpalatal suture in both groups. Especially, the newly formed osteoid were very extensive and the osteoblasts lining the osteoid were very active in the experimental group. 2. At fifteen days after expansion, the active osteoblasts lining the osteold at the surface of trabecular bony spicules and active new bone formation were observed in the both groups. However, the cellular activity and new bone formation were more prominent In the experimental group. 3. At forty five days after expansion, the continuous osteoid and new bone formation and active osteoblasts were observed in the experimental group. But these phenomena were not observed in the control group. In the control group, the numerous osteoclasts were adjacent midpalatal suture and the bony remodeling process was begun. The serum alkaline phosphatase level was maintained highly in the experimental group, but decreased in the control. According to the above results, the author reached the conclusion that sodium fluoride has the stimulation effects on the osteoid production of the osteoblasts during the healing process after the rapid Palatal expansion more continuously.
