  • The convergence rate of a numerical procedure based on Schwarz Alternating Method(SAM) for solving elliptic boundary value problems depends on the selection of the interface conditions applied on the interior boundaries of the overlapping subdomains. It has been observed that the Robin condition (mixed interface condition), controlled by a parameter, can optimize SAM's convergence rate. In [7], one had formulated the multi-parameterized SAM and determined the optimal values of the multi-parameters to produce the best convergence rate for one-dimensional elliptic boundary value problems. However it was not successful for two-dimensional problem. In this paper, we present a new method which utilizes the one-dimensional result to get the optimal convergence rate for the two-dimensional problem.

  • A numerical procedure to analyze 3-dimensional elastohydrodynamic lubrication was applied on the cam-roller contact of the valve mechanism for a marine diesel engine. Both the pressure distribution and the film thickness between the cam and roller follower were calculated for each time step of the whole cycle. The pressure spike is shown at the outlet of the roller edge and it is getting higher as the external load is increased. An effective profiling method for the roller edge was suggested using the results of elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis and the peak pressure was removed completely with the new profiling.

  • A new and efficient method is presented to evaluate contact force and motion of an electric railway simple catenary-pantograph system. Overhead lines are regarded as simple strings, and hangers connected to the strings are replaced with concentrated forces acting on them. The displacement of strings due to concentrated forces caused by hangers and pantograph is expressed using Green's function. A system of linear algebraic equations in terms of unknown forces is derived based upon the compatibility requirement at the location of hangers and pantograph. This procedure is more analytic in formulation compared to the existing methods such as finite difference method or normal modes method, and it is expected to be more accurate. Present method has additional advantage that it requires neither numerical differentiation nor system eigenvalues.

  • The preconditioned conjugate gradient method is an efficient iterative solution scheme for large size finite element problems. As preconditioning method, we choose an incomplete Cholesky factorization which has efficiency and easiness in implementation in this paper. The incomplete Cholesky factorization mettled sometimes leads to breakdown of the computational procedure that means pivots in the matrix become minus during factorization. So, it is inevitable that a reduction process fur stabilizing and this process will guarantee robustness of the algorithm at the cost of a little computation. Recently incomplete factorization that enhances robustness through increasing diagonal dominancy instead of reduction process has been developed. This method has better efficiency for the problem that has rotational degree of freedom but is sensitive to parameters and the breakdown can be occurred occasionally. Therefore, this paper presents new method that guarantees robustness for this method. Numerical experiment shows that the present method guarantees robustness without further efficiency loss.

  • In this paper we introduce 6-fold symmetry crystal growth using new phase-field models based on the modified Allen-Cahn equation. The proposed method is a hybrid method which uses both analytic and numerical solutions. We then show this method can be extended to $k$-fold case. The Wulff construction procedure is provided to understand and predict the shape of crystals. We also present a detailed mathematical proof of the validity of the Wulff construction. For computational results, we verify the accuracy and efficiency of the method for snow crystal growth.

  • Reliability-based design approaches are needed for cylindrical shell structure whose design and operational experiences are few and which are subjected to external loads of random loads. In designing new type of structure, it is very difficult to evaluate the safety factors due to lack of previous design data and operational experience. To solve the above mentioned problem, much attention is being focussed on rational reliability based design approaches. This paper deals with weight-optional reliability-based design of cylindrical shell structure subjected to structural reliability constraints taking into account of the effect of local buckling and interactive behavior between local and global buckling. Present mentioned is compared with the exiting optional design method based only on safety factors. Numerical simulation reveals that the present method leads to lighter structure (4% reduction in weight compared to the existing optimal design) with the same reliability index. For larger structures with more number of structural members and possible failure modes, the present W0RBD procedure will be an efficient tool in designing cost-effective rationalized economic design.

  • IEEE 802.11 defines distributed coordination function (DCF), which is characterized by CSMA/CA and binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm. Most modifications on DCF so far have focused on updating of the contention window (CW) size depending on the outcome of own frame transmission without considering freezing periods experienced in the backoff interval. We propose two simple but novel schemes which effectively utilize the number of freezing periods sensed during the current backoff interval. The proposed schemes can be applied to DCF and its family, such as double increment double decrement (DIDD). Saturation throughput of the proposed schemes is analyzed by means of Bianchi's Markovian model. Computer simulation validates the accuracy of the analysis. Numerical results based on IEEE 802.11b show that up to about 20% improvement of saturation throughput can be achieved by combining the proposed scheme with conventional schemes when applied to the basic access procedure.

  • Reliability demonstration tests (RDT's) are widely employed in design verification and process validation stages of industry. New mixed attribute-variable RDT plans that compromise demerits of the corresponding zero and zero or one failure plans which are common in practice are developed for the exponential distribution. The proposed mixed plans are compared with the typical RDT plans in terms of probability of acceptance and expected test termination time. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the mixed plans and a procedure to extend these plans to the Weibull distribution with known shape parameter is also presented.

  • Mechanical anchorage devices are generally tested in the laboratory and may be analyzed using the finite element method. These devices are composed of many components interacting through diverse contact interfaces. Generally, a Coulomb friction law is sufficient to take into account friction between smooth surfaces. However, in the case of mechanical anchorages, a gripping system, named herein the wedge-tendon system, is used to anchor the prestressing tendon. The wedge inner surface is made of a series of triangular notches designed to grip the tendon. In this particular case, the Coulomb law is not adapted to simulate the contact interface. The present paper deals with a new constitutive contact/gripping law to simulate the gripping effect. A parameter identification procedure, based on experimental results as well as on a finite element/neural network approach, is presented. It is demonstrated that all parameters have been selected in a satisfactory way and that the proposed constitutive law is well adapted to simulate the wedge gripping effect taking place in a mechanical anchorage device.

  • Hwang et al (2001) proposed a new method for an evaluation of equivalent damping ratios of a linear structure with linear or nonlinear damping devices. This procedure has a disadvantage that it requires time history analysis for the whole system including damping devices, which may be troublesome for practical application. To tackle this problem closed form formulas for equivalent damping ratios are proposed in this study. It is assumed that the responses of MDOF system can be reproduced by an equivalent SDOF system which vibrates in a fundamental mode. The numerical analyses of a ten-story building equipped with linear viscous damper or active mass damper or friction damper show the effectiveness of equivalent SDOF model and closed form formulas.
