  • An analytical model of liquid sloshing is developed to consider the energy-loss effect through a partially submerged porous baffle in a horizontally oscillating rectangular tank. The nonlinear boundary condition at the porous baffle is derived to accurately capture both the added inertia effects and the energy-loss effects from an equivalent non-linear drag law. Using the eigenfunction expansion method, the horizontal hydrodynamic force (added mass, damping coefficient) on both the wall and baffle induced by the fluid motion is assessed for various combinations of porosity, submergence depth, and the tank's motion amplitude. It is found that a negative value for the added mass and a sharp peak in the damping curve occur near the resonant frequencies. In particular, the hydrodynamic force and free surface amplitude can be largely reduced by installing the proper porous baffle in a tank. The optimal porosity of a porous baffle is near P=0.1.

  • To obtain accurate and repeatable analyses using NIR technology it is important to select an NIR instrument and / or its sample presentation attachments which allow the operator to minimize sampling errors without compromising the benefits of NIR analysis -namely rapid, low cost, minimal sample preparation, minimal structural facilities, minimal hazards. For each sample type and consistency there may be different optimal combinations of instrument, sample presentation attachment, and sample preparation. This paper will consider options available to NIR users in the area of plant and soil analysis and evaluate the potential benefits and disadvantages of crop nutrient diagnoses using laboratory based and airborne imaging techniques.

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate rapid determination of phosphorus in soils using NIR spectroscopy. The soil samples from the fields subject to different crops and land-use in Kyeongbook province, Korea were used to make the calibration and validation of the calibration set estimating phosphorus in soil. The NIR reflectance was scanned at 2nm intervals from 1100 to 2500nm with an InfraAlyzer 500 (Bran+Luebbe Co.). Various regression analyses were used to evaluate a NIRS method for determination of phosphorus in the soil. NIR absorption approach requires many soil samples to obtain optimal prediction. Applicability of NIR spectra technique may allow for the analysis of available soil phosphorus rapidly as well as total component within a few seconds.

  • The current research field to find near-optimum solutions explores in a small population, which is coined as Micro-Genetic Algorithms (${\mu}$GAs), with some genetic operators. Just as in the Simple-Genetic Algorithms (SGAs), the ${\mu}$GAs work with encoding population and are implemented serially. The major difference between SGAs and ${\mu}$GAs is how to make reproductive plan for more better searching strategy due to the population choice. This paper is conducted to implement ${\mu}$GAs in order to achieve fast searching for more better evolution and associated cost evaluation in global solution space. To achieve this implementation, the Air-Borne Selection (ABS) for a new reproductive plan is developed as new strategic conception for ${\mu}$GAs. In this paper, it is shown that the ${\mu}$GAs implementation reaches a near-optimal region much earlier than the SGAs implementation. The superior ...

  • Collision avoidance for multiple aircraft can be stated as a problem ofmaintaining safe distance between aircraft in conflict. Optimal collision avoidanceproblem seeks to minimize the given cost function while simultaneously satisfyingconstraints. The cost function could be a function of time or control input. This paper addresses the trajectory time-optimization problem for collision avoidance of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs). The problem is difficult to handle in general due to the two-point boundary value problem subject to dynamic environments. Some simplifying aleorithms are used for potential applications in on-line operation.Although under possibility of more complicated problems, a dynamic problem is transformed into a static one by prediction of the conflict time and some appropriate assumptions.

  • Numerical method by Abdi et al. for obtaining a stress singularity near a crack perpendicular to the interface between two elastic materials is reviewed. More efficient and simple method to obtain crack singularity by shifting a mid-side node of 8-node isoparametric element is presented. It is observed that the present analysis provides increased accuracy for the expression of the opening displacement and the determination of the optimal position of the mid-side node for a wide range of material properties.

  • This paper presents a new motion control strategy for singularity avoidance in 6 DOF articulated robot manipulators, based on a speed limiting algorithm for joint positions and velocities. For a given task, the robot is controlled so that the joints move with acceptable velocities and positions within the reachable range of each joint by considering the velocity limit. This paper aims at the development of a new efficient method to control robot motion near and at singularities. The proposed method has focused on generating the optimal joint trajectory for a Cartesian end-effector path within the speed limit of each joint by using the speed limit avoidance as well as the acceleration/deceleration scheme. The proposed method was verified using MATLAB-based simulations.

  • One of the purposes of arc control is to change its state to the diffuse state before current zero as soon as possible. This can provide optimal conditions for full extinction of arc by minimizing the quantity of residual plasma between contacts near current zero. TRV(transient recovery voltage) occurs at current zero at the same time with current interruption. If there is substantial residual plasma near current zero it can cause 'post arc current' by the interaction of its conductance with TRV. In this paper, arc control ability as a function of configuration of spiral type VI contacts was compared on the criteria of the time taken for arc to reach to the diffuse state.

  • The hierarchical approach method is proposed to sperate each different time scale sub-systems from linear time invariant multi-parameter singular perturbation systems. By means of this proposal, the original multi-parameter singular perturbation systems is completely separated into independent subsystems with each different time scale. It is also investigated that the controllability of the system is invariant. And this paper applies singular perturbation methods to the minimum control effort problem for linear time invariant systems with constrained controls. Also near-optimum control theory, which is based on dividing the total time interval with the time scales respectively, is proposed. As a result, the time scale separation method is show to be particularly useful in a near optimum design which can be otained through a decentralized control structure.

  • Cold acoustic tests have been performed to elucidate the effect of baffle gaps on the optimal damping characteristics in a liquid rocket combustor where coaxial injectors are installed. For several axial baffle lengths, an optimal acoustic damping capacitance has been achieved in a certain gap range. Cold acoustic tests for simulating fluid viscosity by changing the pressure in a model chamber have been done to study the main mechanism of optimal damping. Experimental data have shown that the optimal gap for high damping capacity exists mainly due to the viscosity near the gap of baffles. Therefore, axial baffle length can be reduced by using the optimal baffle gap, providing a possible solution of thermal cooling problems. Also, these optimum characteristics can be some guidelines for manufacturing and assembling injectors in full-scaled rocket combustors.
