Macro-porous carbon foams are fabricated using cured spherical phenolic resin particles as a matrix and furfuryl alcohol as a binder through a simple casting molding. Different sizes of the phenolic resin particles from 100-450 ㎛ are used to control the pore size and structure. Ethylene glycol is additionally added as a pore-forming agent and oxalic acid is used as an initiator for polymerization of furfuryl alcohol. The polymerization is performed in two steps; at 80℃ and 200℃ in an ambient atmosphere. The carbonization of the cured body is performed under Nitrogen gas flow (0.8 L/min) at 800℃ for 1 h. Shrinkage rate and residual carbon content are measured by size and weight change after carbonization. The pore structures are observed by both electron and optical microscope and compared with the porosity results achieved by the Archimedes method. The porosity is similar regardless of the size of the phenolic resin particles. On the other hand, the pore size increases in proportion to the phenol resin size, which indicates that the pore structure can be controlled by changing the raw material particle size.
In both cosmetic and functional aspects, loss of digital pulp is a common problem. Compound or composite defects of the hand and fingers with exposed denuded tendon, bone, joint, or neurovascular structures may require flap coverage. Most often these lesions can be repaired by using simple local flap, neurovascular flap, thenar flap, and cross-finger flap. But microvascular reconstruction is sometimes needed for large defects. But Authors do not recommend these procedures in case of severe crushing injuries involving multiple finger pulp losses because they have possibility of damage of the vascular network and infection. So we applied distant flaps such as chest flaps, groin flaps, abdominal flaps and etc. And then we applied surgical rubber gloves for remodeling the flap after cutaneous healing. We have acquired satisfactory results, after the simple molding method for distant flap finger by using surgical rubber gloves treatment.
High-frequency induction is an efficient way to heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction in a noncontact procedure. It has been recently applied to the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Though the induction heating has an advantage in terms of its rapid-heating capacity on the mold surface, it still has difficulty in efficient mold temperature control due to the restriction of an induction coil design suitable for the given mold shape. The present study proposed a localized mold heating method by means of selective use of mold material. For localized induction heating, an injection mold composed of ferromagnetic material and paramagnetic material is used. The electromagnetic induction concentrates on the ferromagnetic material, from which we can selectively heat for the local mold elements. The feasibility of the proposed heating method is investigated through an experimental measurement in terms of the heating efficiency on the localized mold surface.
The cure characteristics of three kinds of naphthalene type epoxy resins(NET-OH, NET-MA, NET-Epoxy) with a 2-methyl imidazole(2MI) catalyst were investigated for preparing sheet epoxy molding compound(SEMC) for wafer level package(WLP) applications, comparing with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A(DGEBA) and 1,6-naphthalenediol diglycidyl ether(NE-16) epoxy resin. The cure kinetics of these systems were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry with an isothermal approach, and the kinetic parameters of all systems were reported in generalized kinetic equations with diffusion effects. The NET-OH epoxy resin represented an n-th order cure mechanism as like NE-16 and DGEBA epoxy resins, however, the NET-MA and NET-Epoxy resins showed an autocatalytic cure mechanism. The NET-OH and NET-Epoxy resins showed higher cure conversion rates than DGEBA and NE-16 epoxy resins, however, the lowest cure conversion rates can be seen in the NET-MA epoxy resin. Although the NETEpoxy and NET-MA epoxy resins represented higher cure reaction conversions comparing with DGEBA and NE-16 resins, the NET-OH showed the lowest cure reaction conversions. It can be figured out by kinetic parameter analysis that the lowest cure conversion rates of the NET-MA epoxy resin are caused by lower collision frequency factor, and the lowest cure reaction conversions of the NET-OH are due to the earlier network structures formation according to lowest critical cure conversion.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the manufacturing feasibility of WC-Co milling inserts via Powder Injection Molding (PIM) process. WC-Co is used in a wide variety of cutting tools due to its high hardness, stiffness, compressive strength and wear resistance properties. WC-Co parts for a high stress application were conventionally produced by the press and sinter method, which were Iimited to 2 dimensional shapes. Manufacturing WC-Co parts for a high stress application by PIM implies that tool efficiency can be highly improved due to increased freedom is design. P30 grade WC powder (WC-Co-TiC-TaC system) was mixed with RIST-5B133 binder and injection molded into milling inserts (Taegu Tech. Model WCMX 06T 308). The mean grain size of the powder was about 0.8$\mu$m. Injection molded specimens were debound by solvent extraction and thermal degradation method at various conditions. The specimens were sintered at 140$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in vacuum. Carbon content, weight loss, dimensional change, and macro defects of the specimen were carefully monitored at each stage of the PIM process. PIMed WC-Co milling inserts reached 100% full density after sinteing. Its mechanical properties and micro-structures were comparable with the press and sintered milling insert. Carbon content of the sintered WC-Co insert was mainly determained by the atmosphere of thermal debinding. By controlling powder loading and injection molding condition, dimensional accuracy could be obtained within 0.4%. We confirm that PIM can not only be an alternative manufacturing method for WC-Co parts economically but also provide a design freedom for more effieient cutting tools.
Dicyclopentadiene is a low viscosity resin which forms a poly-dicyclopentadiene rapidly through ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). This poly-dicyclopentadiene has outstanding properties of low-temperature, water and impact resistances. Due to these advantages, military and offshore structures try to apply the DCPD composites by using liquid composite molding process. In this study, 14%, 38% volume fraction fiber glass strand mat reinforced p-DCPD composites processed by structural reaction injection molding (S-RIM) which has resin-catalsyt mixing head and glass fiber preform in the mold. Additionally, S-RIM numerical analysis was conducted to predict the process time depending on fiber volume fraction and mold temperature. The process time is shorter when it has the lower fiber volume fraction or the higher mold temperature. At higher mold temperature, it is necessary to set the maximum mold temperature considering the resin curing time.
We proposed a method to fabricate label-free protein sensor with sub-wavelength nanograting structures to be used for diagnosing acute myocardial infarction. A nickel stamp for the injection molding of nanograting integrated protein sensor was fabricated by electroforming process with high fidelity. By using metallic stamp, we replicated label-free protein sensor via injection molding, which is an outstanding method for low-cost and mass production of polymer products. Finally, we performed a feasibility test, examining cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and anti-cTnT interactions. From the results, we demonstrated that the fabricated protein sensor can provide information for the early and accurate detection of cardiac diseases such as acute myocardial infarction.
Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Induction heating is an efficient way to heat material by means of an electric current that is caused to flow through the material or its container by electromagnetic induction. It has various applications such as heat treatment, brazing, welding, melting, and mold heating. The present study covers a finite element analysis of the induction heating process which can rapidly raise mold temperature. To simulate the induction heating process, the electromagnetic field analysis and transient heat transfer analysis are required collectively. In this study, a coupled analysis connecting electromagnetic analysis with heat transfer simulation is carried out. The estimated temperature changes are compared with experimental measurements for various heating conditions.
The incomplete saturation and the void formation during the resin infiltration into fibrous porous media in the resin transfer molding process cause failure in the final product during its service. In order to better understand flow behavior during the filling process, a finite-element scheme for transient flow simulation across the micro-structured fibrous media is developed in the present work. A volume-of- fluid (VOF) method has been incorporated in the Eulerian frame to capture the evolution of flow front and the vertical periodic boundary condition has been combined to avoid unwanted wall effect. In the microscale simulation, we investigated the transient filling process in various fiber structures and discussed the mechanism leading to the flow fingering in the case of random fiber distribution. Effects of the filling pressure, the shear-thinning behavior of fluid and the volume fraction on the flow front have been investigated for both intra-tow and the inter-tow flows in dual-scale fiber tow models.
Sandwich structures, which are composed of a thick core between two faces, are commonly used in many engineering applications because they combine high stiffness and strength with low weight. Accordingly, the usage of sandwich structure is very widely applied to the aircraft, the automobile and marine industry, etc., because of these advantages. In this paper, we have investigated the buckling protection of an inner structure plate and the useful corrugated configuration for contact, and the fabrication method of the inner structure plate for large area using the continuous molding process. Also, we have guaranteed the accuracy of the molding process through the micro corrugated mold fabrication and secured the accuracy and analyzed aspect properties of the inner structure plate fabricated for a large area using the partial mold process.
