  • In this work we propose a novel procedure for direct computation of buckling loads for extreme mechanical or thermomechanical conditions. The procedure efficiency is built upon the von Karmann strain measure providing the special format of the tangent stiffness matrix, leading to a general linear eigenvalue problem for critical load multiplier estimates. The proposal is illustrated on a number of validation examples, along with more complex examples of interest for practical applications. The comparison is also made against a more complex computational procedure based upon the finite strain elasticity, as well as against a more refined model using the frame elements. All these results confirm a very satisfying performance of the proposed methodology.

  • The elastic moduli of simulated dry process fuels with varying composition and density were measured in order to analyze the mechanical properties of a dry process fuel pellet. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy(RUS) which can determine all elastic moduli with one set of measurements for a rectangular parallelepiped sample was used to measure the elastic moduli of UO$_{2}$ and simulated dry process fuel. The simulated dry process fuel showed a higher value of Young's modulus than UO$_2$ due to the presence of metallic precipitates and solid solution elements in the UO$_{2}$ matrix. The correlation between Young's modulus and porosity(P) of simulated dry process fuel was found to be 231.4-651.8 P (GPa) at room temperature. Dry process fuel with a higher burnup showed higher Young's modulus because total content of fission product element was increased.

  • Let $\mathbb{X}_t$ be an m-dimensional linear process defined by $\mathbb{X}_t=\sum{_{j=0}^\infty}\;A_j\;\mathbb{Z}_{t-j}$, t = 1, 2, $\ldots$, where $\mathbb{Z}_t$ is a sequence of m-dimensional random vectors with mean 0 : $m\times1$ and positive definite covariance matrix $\Gamma:m{\times}m$ and $\{A_j\}$ is a sequence of coefficient matrices. In this paper we give sufficient conditions so that $\sum{_{t=1}^{[ns]}\mathbb{X}_t$ (properly normalized) converges weakly to Wiener measure if the corresponding result for $\sum{_{t=1}^{[ns]}\mathbb{Z}_t$ is true.

  • This paper deals with power system stabilization problem using a network control system in which the control is applied through a communication channel in feedback form. Analysis and synthesis issues are investigated by modeling the packet delivery characteristics of the network as a Bernoulli random variable, which is described by a two state Markov chain. This model assumption yields an overall system which is described by a discrete-time Markov jump linear system. These employ the norm to measure the performance of the system, and they compute the norm via a necessary and sufficient matrix inequality condition.

  • It has been issued that the irreconcilability of the classical test for a point null and standard Bayesian formulation for testing such a point null. The infimum of the posterior probability of the null hypothesis is used as measure of evidence against the null hypothesis in Bayesian approach; here the infimum is over the family of priors on the alternative hypotheses which includes all density that are a priori reasonable. For iid observations from a multivariate normal distribution in $\textit{p}$ dimensions with an unknown mean and a covariance matrix propotional to the Identity we consider the difference and the Wolfowitz distance of the distributions of the P-value and the lower bound of the posterior probability over the family of all normal priors. The Wolfowitz distance is interpreted as the average difference of the quantiles of the two distrbutions.

  • We have developed a fluorescence optical detection system using a digital micromirror device (DMD) for monitoring 3D cell culture matrices in situ. Full 3D imaging with fast scanning speed was implemented by the combined action of a DMD and a motorized stage. Imaging results with fluorescent microbeads measure the minimum axial resolution of the system as $6.3{\mu}m$, while full 1-mm scanning through 3D alginate-based matrix was demonstrated. For cell imaging, improved images were obtained by removing background fluorescence although the scanning distance was reduced because of low intracellular fluorescence efficiency. The system is expected to be useful to study various dynamics and behaviors of 3-dimensionally cultured cells in microfluidic systems.

  • Several figures representing velocity transmission from joint space to task space are analyzed and compared with each other. The figures include velocity ellipsoid derived from Jacobian matrix, scaled velocity ellipsoid derived from normalized joint velocities, polytope derived by numerical scaling, and polytopes derived by linear combinations of Jacobian column vectors. The results show that the optimal directions given by the measures are not the same and the conventional velocity ellipsoid is not good choice as optimization measure as far as the moving direction is concerned. Simulation examples for 3 d.o.f. redundant robot manipulators in 2-dimensional task space are given for comparison study.

  • This paper considers the synthesis of non-fragile $H_{\infty}$ state feedback controllers for singular systems and static state feedback controller with multiplicative uncertainty. The sufficient condition of controller existence, the design method of non-fragile $H_{\infty}$ controller, and the measure of non-fragility in controller are presented via LMI(linear matrix inequality) technique. Also, through singular value decomposition, some changes of variables, and Schur complements, the sufficient condition can be rewritten as LMI form in terms of transformed variables. Therefore, the obtained non-fragile $H_{\infty}$ controller guarantees the asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the closed loop singular systems within a prescribed degree. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the design method.

  • This paper describes a robust and non-fragile $H_{\infty}$ controller design method for descriptor systems with parameter uncertainties and time delay, as well as a static state feedback controller with multiplicative uncertainty. The controller existence condition, as well as its design method, and the measure of non-fragility in the controller are proposed using linear matrix inequality(LMI) technique, which can be solved efficiently by convex optimization. Therefore, the presented robust and non-fragile $H_{\infty}$ controller guarantees the asymptotic stability and disturbance attenuation of the closed loop systems within a prescribed degree in spite of parameter uncertainties, time delay, disturbance input and controller fragility.
