  • This paper presents a low-power, low-complexity design and implementation results of a high speed multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) wireless LAN (WLAN) baseband processor. The proposed processor is composed of the physical layer convergence procedure (PLCP) processor and physical medium dependent (PMD) processor, which have been optimized to have low-power and reduced-complexity architecture. It was designed in a hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to gate-level circuits using 0.18um CMOS standard cell library. As a result, the proposed TX-PLCP processor reduced the power consumption by as much as 81% over the bit-level operation architecture. Also, the proposed MIMO symbol detector reduced the hardware complexity by 18% over the conventional SQRD-based architecture with division circuits and square root operations.

  • In this paper, a low-complexity and low-power soft output multiple input multiple output (MIMO) symbol detector is proposed for mobile devices with two transmit and two receive antennas. The proposed symbol detector can support both the spatial multiplexing mode and spatial diversity mode in single hardware and shows the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) performance. By applying a multi-stage pipeline structure and using a complex multiplier based on the polar-coordinate, the complexity of the proposed architecture is dramatically decreased. Also, by applying a clock-gating scheme to the internal modules for MIMO modes, the power consumption is also reduced. The proposed symbol detector was designed using a hardware description language (HDL) and implemented using a 65nm CMOS standard cell library. With the proposed architecture, the proposed MIMO detector takes up an area of approximately $0.31mm^2$ with 183K equivalent gates and achieves a 150Mbps throughput. Also, the power estimation results show that the proposed MIMO detector can reduce the power consumption by a maximum of 85% for the various test cases.

  • This paper presents a low-complexity non-iterative soft-decision Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (SD-BCH) decoder architecture and design technique for wireless body area networks (WBANs). A SD-BCH decoder with test syndrome computation, a syndrome calculator, Chien search and metric check, and error location decision is proposed. The proposed SD-BCH decoder not only uses test syndromes, but also does not have an iteration process. The proposed SD-BCH decoder provides a 0.75~1 dB coding gain compared to a hard-decision BCH (HD-BCH) decoder, and almost similar coding gain compared to a conventional SD-BCH decoder. The proposed SD-BCH (63, 51) decoder was designed and implemented using 90-nm CMOS standard cell technology. Synthesis results show that the proposed non-iterative SD-BCH decoder using a serial structure can lead to a 75% reduction in hardware complexity and a clock speed 3.8 times faster than a conventional SD-BCH decoder.

  • This paper presents a high-throughput low-complexity 512-point eight-parallel mixed-radix multipath delay feedback (MDF) fast Fourier transform (FFT) processor architecture for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) applications. To decrease the number of twiddle factor (TF) multiplications, a mixed-radix $2^4/2^3$ FFT algorithm is adopted. Moreover, a dual-path shared canonical signed digit (CSD) complex constant multiplier using a multi-layer scheme is proposed for reducing the hardware complexity of the TF multiplication. The proposed FFT processor is implemented using TSMC 90-nm CMOS technology. The synthesis results demonstrate that the proposed FFT processor can lead to a 16% reduction in hardware complexity and higher throughput compared to conventional architectures.

  • In this paper, the hardware design of rate control for real-time video encoded is proposed. In the proposed method, a quadratic rate distortion model with high-computational complexity is not used when quantization parameter values are being decided. Instead, for low-computational complexity, average complexity weight values of frames are used to calculate QP. For high speed and low computational prediction, the MAD is predicted based on the coded basic unit, using spacial and temporal correlation in sequences. The rate control is designed with the hardware for fast QP decision. In the proposed method, a quadratic rate distortion model with high-computational complexity is not used when quantization parameter values are being decided. Instead, for low-computational complexity, average complexity weight values of frames are used to calculate QP. In addition, the rate control is designed with the hardware for fast QP decision. The execution cycle and gate count of the proposed architecture were reduced about 65% and 85% respectively compared with those of previous architecture. The proposed RC was implemented using Verilog HDL and synthesized with UMC $0.18{\mu}m$ standard cell library. The synthesis result shows that the gate count of the architecture is about 19.1k with 108MHz clock frequency.

  • In this paper we present performance and implementation comparisons of high performance two dimensional forward and inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (2D-DCT/IDCT) algorithm and low power algorithm for $8{\times}8$ 20 DCT and quantization based on partial sum and its corresponding hardware architecture for FPGA in MPEG-4. The architecture used in both low power 20 DCT and 2D IDCT is based on the conventional row-column decomposition method. The use of Fast algorithm and distributed arithmetic(DA) technique to implement the DCT/IDCT reduces the hardware complexity. The design was made using Mentor Graphics Tools for design entry and implementation. Mentor Graphics ModelSim SE6.1f was used for Verilog HDL entry, behavioral Simulation and Synthesis. The 2D DCT/IDCT consumes only 50% of the Operating Power.

  • This paper proposes a new low-power and small-area Reed-Solomon decoder. The proposed Reed-Solomon decoder using a novel simplified form of the modified Euclid's algorithm can support low-hardware complexity and low-Power consumption for Reed-Solomon decoding. The simplified modified Euclid's algorithm uses new initial conditions and polynomial computations to reduce hardware complexity, and thus, the implemented architecture consisting of 3r basic cells has the lowest hardware complexity compared with existing modified Euclid's and Berlekamp-Massey architectures. The Reed-Solomon decoder has been synthesized using the $0.18{\mu}m$ Samsung standard cell library and operates at 370MHz and its data rate supports up to 2.9Gbps. For the (255, 239, 8) RS code, the gate counts of the simplified modified Euclid's architecture and the whole decoder excluding FIFO memory are only 20,166 and 40,136, respectively. Therefore, the proposed decoder can reduce the total gate count at least 5% compared with the conventional DCME decoder.

  • Recently, as WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) becomes the necessary feature in IoT (Internet of Things) devices, the importance of data security also hugely increases. In this paper, we present the low-complexity 128-bit AES-$CCM^*$ hardware IP for IEEE 802.15.4 standard. For low-cost and low-power implementation which is essentially required in IoT devices, we propose two optimization methods. First, the folded AES(Advanced Encryption Standard) processing core with 8-bit datapath is presented where composite field arithmetic is adopted for reduced hardware complexity. In addition, to support $CCM^*$ mode defined in IEEE 802.15.4, we propose the mode-toggling architecture which requires less hardware resources and processing time. With the proposed methods, the gate count of the proposed AES-$CCM^*$ IP can be lowered up to 57% compared to the conventional architecture.

  • A receiver architecture with low complexity for chirp spread spectrum (CSS) of IEEE 802.15.4a is proposed. To demodulate the received signal at the highest signal to noise power ratio, matched filter is generally adopted for the receiver of wireless communication systems. It is, however, not resonable to adjust the matched filter to the receiver of CSS whose objectives are low complexity, low cost and low power consumption since complexity of the matched filter is high. In this paper, we propose a new receiver architecture using differential multiplication and accumulator not matched filter for demodulation. Also, bi-orthogonal decoder implemented by only adder/subtractor is proposed. The hardware resources for implementation are reduced in the proposed receiver architecture, although bit error rate performance is low compared with the receiver architecture based on the matched filter.
