  • It is often difficult, or almost impossible, in most cases to obtain the optimal solution to the non-linear control systems by analytical method. In this paper, the authors have treated with the technique of parameteric adaptation which is introduced into the performance index, in order to circumvent the difficulties arising in seal.ch of optimal policy for the non-linear feedback control systems. This approach is shown to provide the advantage of making it possible to design the non-linear feedback control system even if the design specifications are not completely discribed in mathematical form. This is fundamentally due to a certain degree of freedoln in design, which this method allows the designer in establishing the performance index. The effectiveness and feasibilities of this concept are demonstrated by working out some illustrative examples with the performance index of integral quadratic form.

  • In this paper, we discuss the a posteriori error estimates of the semidiscrete mixed finite element methods for quadratic optimal control problems governed by linear hyperbolic equations. The state and the co-state are discretized by the order $k$ Raviart-Thomas mixed finite element spaces and the control is approximated by piecewise polynomials of order $k(k{\geq}0)$. Using mixed elliptic reconstruction method, a posterior $L^{\infty}(L^2)$-error estimates for both the state and the control approximation are derived. Such estimates, which are apparently not available in the literature, are an important step towards developing reliable adaptive mixed finite element approximation schemes for the control problem.

  • Optimizing transient response for both tracking reference signals and disturbance rejection is determined by the poles and zeros of the transfer function. Thus, optimal pole assignment and how should weighting matrix for the performance index be chosen is very important to achieve optimum transient response. This paper focus its attention on the choosing and analysis of weighting matrix for optimum pole assignment. Optimum pole assignment is defined for linear time-invariant continuous systems.

  • This paper studies on the linearization of a looper system in hot strip mills, that plays an important role in regulating a strip tension or a strip width. Nonlinear dynamic equations of the looper system are analytically linearized by a static feedback linearization algorithm with a compensator. The proposed linear model of the looper is validated by a comparison with a linear model using Taylor's series. It is shown that the linear model by static feedback well describes nonlinearities of the looper system than one using Taylor's series. Furthermore, it is shown from the design of an ILQ controller that the linear model by static feedback is very useful in designing a linear controller of the looper system.

  • This paper considers the design and analysis of one-step ahead optimal and adaptive controllers, under the restriction that a known constraint on the input amplitude is imposed. It is assumed that the discrete-time single-input, single-output system to be controlled is linear, except for inequality constraints on the input. The objective function to be minimized is an one-step quadratic function, where polynomial weights on the input and output are included. Both the known parameter and unknown parameter (indirect adaptive controller) cases are examined.

  • This study deals with guidance and control laws for an optimal reentry trajectory of a vertical landing reusable launch vehicle (RLV) in the future. First, a guidance law is designed to create the reference trajectory which minimizes propellant consumption. Then, a nonlinear feedback controller based on a linear quadratic regulator is designed to make the vehicle follow the predetermined reference trajectory, The proposed method is simulated for the first stage of the H-II scale rocket.

  • This paper presents the implementation and vehicle tests of a vehicle longitudinal control scheme for Stop and Go cruise control. The control scheme consists of a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control algorithm and throttle/brake control algorithm for acceleration tracking. The desired acceleration of a vehicle for vehicle-to-vehicle distance control has been designed using Linear Quadratic optimal control theory. Performance of the control algorithm has been investigated via vehicle tests. A millimeter wave radar sensor has been used for distance measurement. A stepper motor and an electronic vacuum booster have been used for throttle/brake actuators, respectively. It has been shown that the proposed control algorithm can provide satisfactory performance.

  • An indefinite stochastic linear-quadratic(LQ) optimal control problem with cross term over an infinite time horizon is studied, allowing the weighting matrices to be indefinite. A systematic approach to the problem based on semidefinite programming (SDP) and .elated duality analysis is developed. Several implication relations among the SDP complementary duality, the existence of the solution to the generalized Riccati equation and the optimality of LQ problem are discussed. Based on these relations, a numerical procedure that provides a thorough treatment of the LQ problem via primal-dual SDP is given: it identifies a stabilizing optimal feedback control or determines the problem has no optimal solution. An example is provided to illustrate the results obtained.

  • In this paper we present a Genetic approach to select weighting matrices of LQ(Linear Quadratic) controller for optimal TCSC(Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor) control. A design of LQ controller depends on choosing weighting matrices. The selection of weighting matrices is usually carried out by trial and error, which is not a trivial problem. We proposed a efficient method using GA of finding weighting matrices for optimal control law. The proposed GA method was applied to design LQ controller of TCSC in one machine infinite bus system and showed good results.

  • This paper deals with an optimal process control problem in production of hull structural steel plate with high defective rate. The main quality characteristic(dependent variable) is the internal quality(defect) of plates and is dependent on process parameters(independent variables). The dependent variable(quality characteristics) has three categorical ordinal data and there are 35 independent variables(29 continuous variables and 6 categorical variables). In this paper, we determine the main factors and to develop the mathematical model between internal quality predicted probabilities and the main factors. Secondly, we find out the optimal process condition of main factors through analysis of variance(ANOVA) using simulation. We consider three models to obtain the main factors and the optimal process condition: linear, quadratic, error models.
