  • Heatwaves are one of the most common phenomena originating from changes in the urban thermal environment. They are caused mainly by the evapotranspiration decrease of surface impermeable areas from increases in temperature and reflected heat, leading to a dry urban environment that can deteriorate aspects of everyday life. This study aimed to calculate daily maximum ground surface temperature affecting heatwaves, to quantify the effects of urban thermal environment control through water cycle restoration while validating its feasibility. The maximum surface temperature regression equation according to the impermeable area ratios of urban land cover types was derived. The estimated values from daily maximum ground surface temperature regression equation were compared with actual measured values to validate the calculation method's feasibility. The land cover classification and derivation of specific parameters were conducted by classifying land cover into buildings, roads, rivers, and lands. Detailed parameters were classified by the river area ratio, land impermeable area ratio, and green area ratio of each land-cover type, with the exception of the rivers, to derive the maximum surface temperature regression equation of each land cover type. The regression equation feasibility assessment showed that the estimated maximum surface temperature values were within the level of significance. The maximum surface temperature decreased by 0.0450℃ when the green area ratio increased by 1% and increased by 0.0321℃ when the impermeable area ratio increased by 1%. It was determined that the surface reduction effect through increases in the green area ratio was 29% higher than the increasing effect of surface temperature due to the impermeable land ratio.

  • In recent years, the change of urban function and the decrease in birth rate have given rise to merge, abolition and relocation of the existing schools. This study explores the possibilities for various land utilizations of disused school sites, using the trial case of 'M' elementary school at Bu-pyung Gu in Incheon Metropolitan City. 'M' elementary school has recently happened to need no more land to build another school because of decreasing the number of students. Firstly, it studies the land reuse theories in city, the development methodologies of disused sites and the legalistic and political authority and limits. It analyzes the urban spacial values and roles, such as the educational roles, spacial functions and development values of the land. In addition, this study make a questionnaire of local residents to converge the public opinions on the utilization of disused school site. Finally, it proposes the principal direction for the effective appropriation and an alternative for exploitation of school site targeting disused school site of 'M' elementary school.

  • This study surveyed the actual status of reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province, North Korea, using satellite images and literature to survey the creation date, area, and length of the embankment of the reclamation areas. The reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province were created in three stages, with the first stage completed in the late 1970s or early 1980s, the second stage in the late 1980s or early 1990s, and the third stage in the 2000s. The total area of the reclamation areas is 105,570 hectares. The land cover of the reclamation areas is as follows: agriculture (50.5%), saltern (29.5%), water bodies (13.6%), foreshore (12.4%), grasslands (3.0%), bare land (0.4%), facility (0.1%), and forests (0.1%). The study also found that the NDVI values of the reclamation areas vary depending on the location. The NDVI values of the Gwiseong and Namyang reclamation areas are low, while the NDVI values of the Samcheonpo and Jigdongbaedali reclamation areas are high. The study found that the NDVI values of the reclamation areas are correlated with the land cover of the reclamation areas. The study's findings can be used to understand the development direction and regional characteristics of the reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province. The study's findings can also be used to develop policies and plans for the sustainable development and utilization of the reclamation areas in South Pyongan Province.

  • Animal waste is a major agricultural waste or wastewater that requires appropriate treatment to prevent environmental pollution. In this presentation, it is examined if incineration of manure compost is an alternative to treatment of animal waste. Heating values of selected biomass including manure compost were obtained using a bomb calorimeter. Based on heating values of manure and manure compost, ranging from 1200 - 1500 kcal/kg on wet base, incineration could be an alternative for animal waste treatment if available land is limited for land application and sufficient reduction of water content in manure compost.

  • The aim of this paper is to evaluate users benefit values of theme park using Travel Cost Method with special reference to Woobang Tower Land in Taegu for the estimation of economic values. This research is mainly based on questionnaire survey of 100 users of the theme park. Socio-economic factors such as income, year of education, annual income, age and money(travel cost) are analysed from 5 residential areas of the respondents. Multiple regression analysis was used for the evaluation of annual number of park visitings based on the analysis. The regression model shows NV = $\alpha$+$\beta_1$TC+$\beta_2$INC+$\beta_3$EDU+$\beta_4$AGE (NV : Annual Number of Visitings, TC : Travel Cost, INC : Annual Income, EDU : Years of Education, AGE : Age). Regarding to visitors demand curve based on the equation showed that annual economic values of Woobang Tower Land was estimated as 50billion Korean Won.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the spatial and temporal resolutions that can represent land surface characteristics comprised of various land use using Landsat/AMSR2-based soil moisture data. We estimated the Landsat (30 m×30 m)-based soil moisture values using the soil moisture regression model. Then, the Landsat (30 m×30 m)-based soil moisture (reference values) were resampled to the relatively coarse resolutions from 1 km to 4 km, respectively. Comparing the reference values to the resampled soil moisture values, we confirmed that uncertainties were increased with the spatial resolutions of 2 km~4 km indicating that the spatial resolution of 1 km×1 km is required to represent the complicated land surface. Also, the AMSR2 soil moisture values have less uncertainties compared to SMAP data with the temporal resolution of 1~2 days. Thus, our findings can be useful for various areas such as agriculture, hydrology, forest, etc.

  • Although low spatial resolution satellite images like MODIS and GOCI can be important to observe land surface, it is often difficult to visually interpret the imagery because of the low contrast by prevailing cloud covers. We proposed a simple and adaptive stretching algorithm to enhance image contrast over land areas in cloudy images. The proposed method is basically a linear algorithm that stretches only non-cloud pixels. The adaptive linear stretch method uses two values: the low limit (L) from image statistics and upper limit (U) from low boundary value of cloud pixels. The cloud pixel value was automatically determined by pre-developed empirical function for each spectral band. We used MODIS and GOCI images having various types of cloud distributions and coverage. The adaptive contrast stretching method was evaluated by both visual interpretation and statistical distribution of displayed brightness values.

  • The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively measure the effect of location in evaluating the land value through the implementation of GIS coupled with spatial statistical analysis. We assumed that the hedonic price model, which was commonly used in modelling the land value, could not explain the spatial factor effectively. In order to add the spatial factor, the analysis of the spatial autocorrelation was used. The present project used 54 standard land price samples from 1421 parcel land values and applied Kriging to predict stochastically the unsampled values on the basis of spatial autocorrelation between location of vector data. This study confirms that the spatial variogram analysis has an advantage of predicting spatial dependence process and revealing the positive premium and the negative penality on location factor objectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the hydrological impact due to temporal land cover change by gradual urbanization of upstream watershed of Pyeongtaek gauging station of Anseong-cheon. WMS HEC-1 was adopted, and OEM with 200 m resolution and hydrologic soil group from 1:50,000 scale soil map were prepared. Land covers of 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1999 Landsat TM images were classified by maximum likelihood method. The watershed showed a trend that forest & paddy areas decreased and urban/residential area gradually increased during the four selected years. The model was calibrated at 2 locations (Pyeonglaek and Gongdo) by comparing observed with simulated discharge results for 5 summer storm events from 1998 to 2001. The watershed average CN values varied from 61.7 to 62.3 for the 4 selected years. To identify the impact of streamflow by temporal area change of a target land use, a simple evaluation method that the CN values of areas except the target land use are unified as one representative CN value was suggested. By applying the method, watershed average CN value was affected in the order of paddy, forest and urban/residential, respectively.

  • In this study, crosshole seismic test, donwhole seismic test, SPT uphole test, and suspension PS logging (SPS logging) were conducted and the shear wave velocities of these tests were compared. The test demonstrated the following result: Downhole tests showed similar results compared to those of crosshole tests, which is known to be relatively accurate. SPS logging showed reliable results in the case of no casing, i.e. in the rock mass, while, in the case of soil ground, its values were lower or higher than those of other tests. SPT-uphole tests showed similar results in the soil ground and upper area of rock mass compared to other methods. However, reliable results could not be obtained from these tests because SPT sampler could not penetrate into the rock mass for the tests.
