Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes were synthesized by the pyrolysis of polymeric precursors. The CMS materials had oxygen-nitrogen selectivities much higher than those observed for the polymeric precursors. Typically molecular sieving materials have diffusion selectivities much higher than polymeric materials. This has been identified as a result of higher entropic selectivity of the molecular sieving materials. A study of the development of molecular sieving properties as the polymeric precursor is pyrolyzed into a CMS material will offer us an insight into polymeric molecular structures needed for enhanced entropic selectivity membrane materials.

Drag prediction is sought for the aifoil having laminar and turbulent flow characteristics with CFD code being unable to predict transition to turbulent flow. Laminar flow simulation presents some insight to the transition position. Separate simulations with laminar and turbulent flow and their combination estimate the drag of the airfoil containing laminar and turbulent flow characteristics.

This study attempts to understand factors influencing the persistence of companie's outsourcing arrangements using the techniques of survival analysis. It provides an insight into the dynamics of outsourcing relationships between clients and vendors. This is particularly relevant considering that current IS sourcing arrangements are strategic and long term, and require close interdependent relationships between the client and the vendor.

Though the supplier diversification is considered as a vital tool to mitigate the risk due to supply chain disruptions, there are results which show the optimality of the sole sourcing. This paper further generalizes the results to show that the sole sourcing is optimal under very mild conditions. Discussion on why the sole sourcing is optimal is given with the insight on the value of supplier diversification.

By using the state plane approach, the steady state analysis and design of a half bridge parallel-series (LLC-type) resonant converter (HBPSRC) operating in the continous conduction made is presented. The state-plane diagram representation of the converter response gives good insight into the converter operation. Based on this analysis, a set of steady state characteristic waves for HBPSRC is presented. A simple design procedure is given and design example for a 100watts, 30KHz HBPSRC is presented for illustrative purposes.

Neural network models, also known as connectionist models or PDP models, simulate some functions of the brain and may promise to give insight in understanding the cognitive brain functions. The models composed of neuron-like elements that are linked into circuits can learn and adapt to its environment in a trial and error fashion. In this article, the history and principles of the neural network modeling are briefly reviewed, and its applications to psychiatry are discussed.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) playa crucial role in initiating and regulating innate and adaptive immune responses by detecting invading microbial pathogens. TLRs can also respond to non-microbial molecules derived from damaged tissue. Accumulating evidence suggests that deregulation of TLRs results in the dysfunction of immune system and ultimately increases the risk of many immune and inflammatory diseases including infectious diseases, allergy, and autoimmune diseases. Therefore, understanding how the immune system is controlled by TLRs will provide new insight to find the way to prevent or treat infectious diseases and immune disorders.

This paper addresses the effect of protective capacity on the lead time and throughput of a re-entrant line where statistical fluctuations exist in the form of variation in processing times and machine breakdowns. The specific framework employed in the paper is a five station re-entrant line structured as a closed network mode. This paper argues that protective capacity can be used in conjunction with WIP inventory in order to reduce the lead time and to increase the increase the throughput of a line. Simulation analyses are included to give insight into the effectiveness of protective capacity.

This pape applies the multi-attribute utility theory for estimating the non-economci value of technology. The technology of the code division multiple access in mobile communications is used as a case study. The overall performance of BISDN depends significantly on the interconnection network or the switch fabric. Hence, it is extremely important to evaluate the performance of the network or the fabric. The well developed performance models also provide insight into the factors that determine design tradeoffs as well as quantitative estimates of their importance. The objective of this paper is to investigate and critically compare all the developed performance analysis models of FPS according to internal switch fabric structure, traffic assumptions, performance measures, methodologies, etc. FPSs are described according to their internal fabric structure. Brief history of FPS performance analysis is mentioned and performance analysis modeling is discussed.
