  • The characteristics of defect correction method are discussed in a sample heat conduction problem showing the numerical solution of the error correction equation can predict the error of the numerical solution of the original governing equation. A way of using defect correction method combined with the existing algorithm for the incompressible fluid flow, is proposed and subsequently tested for the driven square cavity problem. The error correction equations for the continuity equation and the momentum equations are considered to estimate the errors of the numerical solutions of the original governing equations. With this new approach, better velocity and pressure fields can be obtained by correcting the original numerical solutions using the estimated errors. These calculated errors also can be used to estimate the orders of magnitude of the errors of the original numerical solutions.

  • The objective of this research is to design, manufacture and test a mass flow controller capable of measuring compressible as well as incompressible fluid flows based on a 'bucket and stop-watch' method. The basic principle behind such a system is the measurement of time, where the time taken to fill and empty a bucket of known volume is measured. This device should be able to handle fluid flows in the range of 0.1 ml/min to 10 ml/min within an accuracy of ${\pm}$1%. For the flow meter to be able to compete with established designs, it must be not only comparable in cost and robustness, but also very accurate and reliable as well.

  • The primary effect of the far-field underwater explosion (UNDEX) is the whipping of the ship hull girder. This paper aims to verify why inelastic effects should be considered in the whipping response estimations from the UNDEX simulations. A navy ship was modeled using Timoshenko beam elements over the ship length uniformly keeping the constant midship section modulus. The transient UNDEX pressure was produced using two types of the Geers-Hunter doubly-asymptotic models: compressible and incompressible fluids. Because the UNDEX model based on incompressible fluid assumption provided more increased fluid volume acceleration in the bubble phase, the incompressible fluid-based UNDEX model was adopted for the inelastic whipping response analyses. The non-linear hull girder bending moment-curvature curve was used to embed inelastic effects in the UNDEX analyses where the Smith method was applied to derive the non-linear stiffness. We assumed two stand-off distances to see more apparent inelastic effects: 40.5 m and 35.5 m. In the case of the 35.5 m stand-off distance, there was a statistically significant inelastic effect in terms of the average of peak moments and the average exceeding proportional limit moments. For the conservative design of a naval ship under UNDEX, it is recommended to use incompressible fluid. In the viewpoint of cost-effective naval ship design, the inelastic effects should be taken into account.

  • We consider the Cauchy problem for a Keller-Segel-fluid model with degenerate diffusion for cell density, which is mathematically formulated as a porus medium type of Keller-Segel equations coupled to viscous incompressible fluid equations. We establish the global-in-time existence of weak solutions and bounded weak solutions depending on some conditions of parameters such as chemotactic sensitivity and consumption rate of oxygen for certain range of diffusive exponents of cell density in two and three dimensions.

  • Two-dimensional stagnation flow toward a plane wall coated with magnetic fluid of uniform thickness is investigated. The flow field is represented as a similarity solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for this incompressible laminar flow. The resulting third order ordinary differential equation is solved numerically by using the shooting method and by determining two shooting parameters so as to satisfy the boundary and interface conditions. Features of the flow including streamline patterns are investigated for the varying values of density ratio, viscosity ratio, and Reynolds number. An adverse flow with double eddy pair in magnetic fluid region is found to emerge as the Reynolds number becomes higher than a threshold value. The results for the interface velocity, interface and wall shear stress, and boundary layer and displacement thickness are also presented.

  • The two-fluid model is widely used to describe two-phase flows in complex systems such as nuclear reactors. Although the two-phase flow was successfully simulated, the standard two-fluid model suffers from an ill-posed nature. There are several remedies for the ill-posedness of the one-dimensional (1D) two-fluid model; among those, artificial viscosity is the focus of this study. Some previous works added artificial diffusion terms to both mass and momentum equations to render the two-fluid model well-posed and demonstrated that this method provided a numerically converging model. However, they did not consider mass conservation, which is crucial for analyzing a closed reactor system. In fact, the total mass is not conserved in the previous models. This study improves the artificial viscosity model such that the 1D incompressible two-fluid model is well-posed, and the total mass is conserved. The water faucet and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability flows were simulated to test the effect of the proposed artificial viscosity model. The results indicate that the proposed artificial viscosity model effectively remedies the ill-posedness of the two-fluid model while maintaining a negligible total mass error.

  • Fluid-Structure Interaction analysis of a circular cylinder surrounded by incompressible turbulent flow is presented. The fluid flow is modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with large-eddy simulation for turbulent vortical flows. The circular cylinder is modeled as elastic continuum described by elasto-dynamic equation of motion. Finite element method based approach is utilized for unified formulation of fluid-structure interaction analysis. The magnitude and frequency of structural response is analysed in comparison to the driving fluid forces.

  • The fluid induced vibration (FIV) phenomena of a 2-D.O.F airfoil system have been investigated in low Reynolds number incompressible flow region. Unsteady flows with viscosity are computed using two-dimensional incompressible Navier-stokes code. To validate developed Navier-Stokes code, steady and unsteady flow fields around airfoil are analyzed. The present fluid/structure interaction analysis is based on the most accurate computational approach with computational fluid dynamics (CSD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) techniques. The highly nonlinear fluid/structure interaction phenomena due to severe flow separations have been analyzed fur the low Reynolds region (R$_{N}$ =500~5000) that has a dominancy of flow viscosity. The effect of R$_{N}$ on the fluid/structure coupled vibration instability of 2-DOF airfoil system is presented and the effect of initial angle of attack on the dynamic instability are also shown.own.

  • A two-layer incompressible time-accurate Euler solver is applied to analyze flow fields around a submerged body moving at a critical speed near a pycnocline. Discontinuities in the dependent variables across the material interface are captured without any dissipation or oscillation using the ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. It is shown that the material interlace has significant effects on forces acting on a submerged body moving near a pycnocline regardless of the small difference in densities of two layers. Contrary to the shallow water waves, a submerged body can reach a critical speed at very low Froude number due to the small difference in the densities of the two layers.

  • AILU type preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation of the interaction of rigid cylinder with incompressible fluid flow have been devised and tested by solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a rigid cylinder with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 mixed finite element formulation coupled with combined formulation. Four different preconditioners were devised for the two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation extending the idea of Nam et al., which was proposed for the preconditioning of a P2P1 mixed finite element formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It was found that PC-III or PC-IV among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence rate for some bench-mark problems.
