Social support may play an important role in relieving the feelings of guilt and shame of unwed mothers due to social insults and ignorance and in helping them from physical and psychological harm caused by them. In addition hope may encourage to seek out a new way of life. To determine if a relationship between perceived social support and hope exists in unwed mothers a descriptive study was conducted in the facilities providing basic data for promoting the health of unwed mothers. A demographic data sheet and two instruments were used : Indirectly Perceived Social Support Scale(IPSSS) developed by Park Jee Won (revised by Jo Moo Yong), Miller Hope Scale(adapted and revised by Lee Mi Ja), 95 unmarried mothers participated. The mean score of perceived social support was 3.17. Family support was the highest(3.47) and unwed father support was the lowest(2.53) in sub-scales. Material support(3.53) was the highest in family support. Emotional support(3.58) was the highest in friends support. Informational support(3.39) was the highest in facilities-concerned personal support. The mean score of hope was 3.41 : the satisfaction with self, others and life was the highest(3.82) and anticipation of future was the lowest(3.27) in sub-scale. There was not a statistically significant relationship between social support and hope. A statistically significant relationship was found between facilities-concerned personal support and hope. In conclusion, facilities-concerned positive encouragement for unwed mothers and a program promoting support and hope from families, friends and unwed father are necessary to promote hope and health in unwed mothers.
A written association test has been conducted to establish the concept, the meaning and the process of hope. The test consists of the major question : List of three words related to “hope”. The question was given to 55 nurses(rehabilitation /cancer /internal medicine care wards units) and 61 patients. A total of 289 words have been collected, and the collection was analyzed with categorization by the value or meaning of listed words. The analysis yields three major categories, namely, componants of hope, metaphores /symbols, and synonyms. The three major categories may be further partitioned into subcategories. The results are significant to define the nature of the hope and process of the hope. These understanding will facilitate the development of effective methods of nursing or chronic or cancer patients disabled.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop a program of group psychotherapy named "the promotion of hope program (PHP)" that will provide effective emotional support for cancer patients. Methods: In order to develop a group counseling program for cancer patients, this study utilized reality therapy based on Oriental medicine theory which is the mind affect the body. We established four steps for making positive changes to individual behavior: creating soil for hope, watering hope, sprouting hope, and the blossoming flower of hope. To verify the effectiveness of the program, we conducted a comparative clinical trial. Patients were divided into two groups by unrestricted randomization: the intervention group (n=20) and the control group (n=17). The members of each group did not exceed seven patients. We divided the trial period into three sections. The intervention group received group psychotherapy twice a week for 4 weeks. The control group watched hope-related videos and talked about members for two hours each week for four weeks. We evaluated the scale of anxiety and depression, self-esteem, and hope, both before and after the examination. Results: PHP decreased the level of anxiety and depression in the intervention group (1.21 vs. 0.75, p<0.01). PHP also improved the level of both self esteem (2.80 vs. 3.34, p<0.01) and hope (2.69 vs. 3.23, p<0.01). In contrast, the control group showed no interval change at any point in time. Conclusion: Following the above results, PHP can be seen as an effective program for helping cancer patients to increase positive emotions and behaviors while reducing negative thoughts.

The most powerful coping strategy was positive refocusing, explaining 73% in hope, 25% in depression, and 25% in life satisfaction.
