  • Recently it is recognized that the effects of structure-soil interaction(SSI) on the response of structures are important in the dynamic analysis of structures. In this study, theoretical and experimental investigations were performed to study the SSI effects(mainly inertial interaction) on the dynamic response of buildings utilizing the finite element foumulation. Theoretical studies were performed with two idealized buildings(stubby one and slender one) built on the homogeneous soil layer and having the small embedment ratio. Experimental investigations were also carried out for two buildings built on the pile foundation in Mexico City, experienced the 1985 Earthquake. The results of this study show that the SSI effects are significant on the response of structures due to the change of fundamental frequency and effective damping ratio, and that it is necessary to include the SSI effects on the dynamic analysis of structures.

  • This paper illustrates the results of a series of seismic geotechnical centrifuge experiments to explore dynamic structure-soil-structure interaction (SSSI) of two structures (named S1 and S2) installed on ground surface. A dense homogeneous ground is prepared in an equivalent shear beam (ESB) container. Two structural models are designed to elicit soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) with different masses, heights, and dynamic characteristics. Five experimental tests are carried out for: (1) two reference responses of the two structures and (2) the response of two structures closely located at three ranges of distance. It is found that differential settlements of both structures increase and the smaller structure (S2) inversely rotates out of the other (S1) when they interact with each other. S2 structure experiences less settlement and uplift when at a close distance to the S1 structure. Furthermore, the S1 structure, which is larger one, shows a larger rocking and a smaller sliding response due to the SSSI effects, while S2 structure tends to slide more than that in the reference test, which is illustrated by an increase in sliding response and rocking stiffness as well as a decrease in moment-to-shear ratio (M/H·L) of the S2 structure.

  • In the design of general hydrological structures, it is well know that the design flood is of importance in the design of those structures. As the design flood is estimated using the design storm, the design storm is defined by the rainfall intensity itself. Though I had studied and reported many times the reports about the rainfall-intensity in my country, poorly I did not study the long-period variation of the intensity through each section in my country before. But now, in the basin area of the Han river and the Keum river, the self-recorded rainfall charts of the single storms, which are mostly above rainfall amount of 30mm and data of about 4500 with the 150 stationyear, were analyzed, And then, the intensity formula of the hourly unit is estimated using the period from 10 minutes to 5 days. The method to analyze and estimate them, and the final results will be summarized as mentioned below: (i) At first I intended to select out the homogeneous watersheds of three, one in the Han river and two in the Keum river. But I would select the northern and the sourthern river basins, and westward from Koan station, in the basins of the Han river. Also I would select the upstream area, and the downstream area including the watershed of Chungioo, Kongjoo, Chupungryung, and the Mt. Sock, in the basins of the Keum river. Finally, I could find that there couldn't in the Keum river basin. So, I decided out and analyze only river basins of the Han river with limitation mentioned above. (ii) The statistical method to select out the homogenous watersheds is the test of homogeneous variance, and it is estimated from the following equation: $$X_{k1}^2=[{\Sigma}(n_i-1)log\bar{S^2}-\Sigma(n_i-1)log\bar{S^2}]{\times}loge$$ (iii) Actually, each homogeneous watershed has individually its own intensity formula, But I would express them as the actual amount, because the equation of intensity variance is experiential and theoretical equation of the variance. Therefore the caluating equation is actually more convenient in the actual uses. (iv) This report is one of the series for me to give the basis to the actual designs. The cost for this study is provided by the Ministry of Construction. And the designs of the hydrological structures in the watersheds with limitation mentioned above may be concerned with and based upon this report.

  • The mirror conjecture means originally the deep relation between complex and symplectic geometry in Calabi-Yau manifolds. Recently, this conjecture is posed beyond Calabi-Yau, and even to, open manifolds (e.g. $A_{n}$ singularities and its resolution) is discussed. While if we treat open manifolds, we can't avoid the boundary (in our case, CR manifolds). Therefore we pose the more precise conjecture (mirror symmetry with boundaries). Namely, in mirror symmetry, for boundaries, what kind of structure should correspond\ulcorner For this problem, the $A_{n}$ case is studied.

  • With increasing globalization, a proper policy for global inter-city networking strongly required, which presumes the study on the heterogeneity among regional innovation systems. While surveying the research results of the Evolutionary Economics, 1 stress that regional systems of innovation differ in technological capacities, industrial structures, institutional arrangements and socio-cultural features. 1 make the empirical investigation based on the data of Busan and Hamburg, making clear the regional specificities among regional innovation systems. The results show that regional systems of innovation in Busan and Hamburg are quitely asymmetric. They suggest also the limitation of neo-classical assumption on the ‘homogeneous production function’ and that policy-makers in regions should make the policy for ‘global inter-cities networking’, based on perspectives of regional heterogeneity.

  • A model for reflection and refraction of magneto-thermoelastic SV-waves at the interface of two transversely isotropic and homogeneous solid half spaces under initial stress by applying classical dynamical theory of thermoelasticity is purposed. The reflection and refraction coefficients of SV-waves are obtained with ideal boundary conditions for SV-wave incident on the solid-solid interface. The effects of magnetic field, temperature and initial stress on the amplitude ratios after numerical computations are shown graphically with MATLAB software for the particular model.

  • The present paper is devoted to study SH-wave propagation in heterogeneous layer laying over an inhomogeneous isotropic elastic half-space. The dispersion relation for propagation of said waves is derived with Green's function method and Fourier transform. As a special case when the upper layer and lower half-space are homogeneous, our derived equation is in agreement with the general equation of Love wave. Numerically, it is observed that the velocity of SH-wave increases with the increase of inhomogeneity parameter.

  • In this paper we investigate the existence of SH-waves in fiber-reinforced layer placed over a heterogeneous elastic half-space. The heterogeneity of the elastic half-space is caused by the exponential variations of density and rigidity. As a special case when both the layers are homogeneous, our derived equation is in agreement with the general equation of Love wave. Numerically, it is observed that the velocity of SH-waves decreases with the increase of heterogeneity and reinforced parameters. The dimensionless phase velocity of SH-waves increases with the decreases of dimensionless wave number and shown through figures.

  • In this article, we generalize the results discussed in [6] by introducing a genus to generic fibers of Lefschetz fibrations. That is, we give families of relations in the mapping class groups of genus-1 surfaces with boundaries that represent rational homology disk smoothings of weighted homogeneous surface singularities whose resolution graphs are 3-legged with a bad central vertex.
